Fig. 10
DEVICE FOR PACKING TRANSPORTING AND STORING READY-MADE CURTAINS OR DRAPES This invention relates to devices for packing, transporting, and storing ready-made curtains or drapes which are provided at their upper edges with fittings for hanging them.
Ready-made curtains or drapes are well known and conventionally consist of curtains or drapes which are completely ready for hanging or have been made up to the extent that they require only adaptation to the particular rod or rail system from which they are to be suspended. More particularly, ready-made curtains or drapes are already provided with pleating or gathering so that they have the required or desired length and width and are, as a rule, provided at their upper edges with hangers or fittings by means of which they can be suspended from ceiling or wall-mounted rails or rods with the hangers being slidable on the mounted rails or rods. The hangers provided on the upper edges of the ready-made curtains or drapes may consist, for example, of runners, rollers, hooks, or other conventional devices made of plastic or other suitable material.
The production of ready-made curtains or drapes by manufacturers is becoming increasingly popular with various manufacturing methods being well known in the art. For example, in one conventional manufacturing methods, pleats are formed at the top edge of the curtain or drape to be secured by a customary sewn-on supporting tape. Prior to the hanging of the thus-produced curtain or drape, rollers, runners, or the like are then inserted in the usual manner into loops provided in the supporting tape. Additionally, it is possible to fasten the pleats of the curtains or drapes in clip-like devices which embody the curtain or drape hangers.
Prior to the present invention, ready-made curtains or drapes have been packed, transported and stored by folding them and placing them in plastic bags. This procedure has the disadvantage of being time-consuming in addition to subjecting the curtains or drapes to considerable undesirable creasing. Furthermore, the hanging of a curtain or drape, after it has been removed from the prior art packaging arrangement, takes considerable time because the undesirable folds and creases in the material resulting from the conventional packing arrangements must be removed by pressing the curtains or drapes or performing some similar operation.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device for the compact packing, transporting, and storage of ready-made curtains or drapes in which the curtain or drape is not subjected to significant creasing.
A further object of the present invention resides in providing a device into which the curtain or drape can be rapidly inserted for subsequent crease-free washing and from which it can be removed rapidly and neatly in substantially the same position as inserted.
According to the present invention, there is provided a protective envelope or case having a lid or cover provided with a handle with one or more rails being provided on the underside of the lid or cover for receiving the hangers provided on the ready-made curtains or drapes.
According to the present invention, the curtains or drapes are suspended on the rail or rails by their respective hangers and, subsequently, are inserted into the protective envelope or case so that during transportation and storage, although the curtains or drapes lie in folds, the folds correspond substantially to the freefall folds of the curtains or drapes and lie or hang in an extended position ,whereby undesirable creasing cannot occur. Furthermore, the rail or rails of the present invention are so designed so as to permit the fittings or hangers of the curtain or drape to be quickly fitted on the rail or rails.
One advantage of the present invention resides in the fact that, particularly upon removal of the curtain or drape from the envelope or case, the user has the curtain or drape immediately in' the same position in which it is to be suspended from the ceiling or wall rod.
A further advantage of the present invention resides in the fact that even if the curtain or drape must be folded over once or more because of its great length to enable it to be accommodated in a relatively short protective envelope or case after suspension from the lid or cover, there is no significant creasing due to the fact that the curtain or drape is suspended from the lid or cover and packed into the protective envelope or case in an entirely orderly manner. To further avoid undesirable creasing and to improve the packing of the curtain or drape in these situations, the curtain or drape may, for example, be tied at the points where it is folded over.
A further advantage of the present invention resides in the fact that even after the curtain or drape has been used, the lid can be employed to receive the curtain or drape for cleaning purposes. This particular feature is extremely advantageous particularly in situations wherein the material used for the curtain or drape is sensitive, in which case the curtain or drape can then be moved about in the cleaning solution while suspended from the lid and reamins in the position in which it is to be hung, thereby assuring that creasing does not occur during the. cleaning of the curtains or drapes.
One feature of the present invention resides in providing a protective envelope or case which is in the form ofa rigid container closed by a lid holding the curtain or drape. I
Another feature of the present invention resides in providing a protective envelope or case which is approximately the same length as the packed curtain or drape.
A further feature of the present invention resides in providing a lid or cover having a rim or lip which projects down below the rail or rails provided on the lid or cover with at least one breakor opening provided in the rim or lip for the introduction of the hangers into or onto the rail or rails.
A still further feature of the present invention resides in providing a substantially S-shaped rail whereby a relatively great length of rail can be accommodated on the lid or cover even though the lid or cover and the protective envelope or case have a relatively small diameter.
A still further feature of the present invention resides in providing a device whereby a rail or rails may be 3 the required manner therby avoiding excessively wide lids in situations where wide curtains or drapes are to be packed.
A further feature of the present invention resides, in situations wherein round lids or lids provided with more than four corners are employed, in providing a rail or rails arranged in circular form. If a plurality of rails are provided on the lid, these rails may be disposed parallel to or concentrically with one another.
The aforementioned objective, features, and advantages of the arrangement constructed in accordance with the present invention will become more readily apparent from the consideration of the detailed description hereinbelow, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 'lis a perspective view of the container arrange ment according to the present invention with portions of the container broken away to illustrate the drapes suspended therein;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the lower side of the lid illus" trated in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of the lid of FIG. 2 with a curtain or drape mounted thereon;
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along line IV-lV of FIG. 3;
FIG. is a plan view of the lower side ofa lid according to a further embodiment of the present invention with the rail being divided into three protions bent at acute angles to one another and illustrates an alternative arrangement for receiving the curtain or drape hangers;
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along line VIVI of FIG. 5;
FIGS. 7 through 9 are plan views of the lower sides of lids according to further embodiments of the present invention with the rails being substantially S-shaped, substantially circular, and helically extending, respectively; and
FIG. is a view ofa further embodiment of the present invention with a curtain or drape folded over twice in the longitudinal direction and disposed in a protective envelope.
Referring now. to the drawing wherein like reference numerals are used throughout the various views to designate like parts, according to FIG. 1, a substantially cylindrical open-topped container 1 is provided with a lid 2 to which an handle 3 is fitted. While the container 1 is illustrated as being substantially circular in cross section, it is to be understood that such container may be of square, rectangular or polygonal cross section with the lid 2 being adapted to cover the appropriate cross-sectional opening.
Asishown in FIG. 1, the lid 2 is provided with a downwardly projecting rim or lip portion 4 which telescopes or is received in the container 1 and held in its inserted positionv by a tight fit. The outer surface of the rim 4 and the appertaining inner wall 8 of the container 1 may also be provided with a short coarse-pitch screw thread arrangement or bayonet fastening means in order to ensure an adequately firm connection between the lid 2 and the container 1.
As further shown in FIG. 1, a ready-made curtain or drape 5 is suspended on the underside of the lid 2 with the length of thecontainer being selected such that when the lid 2 is fitted to the container 1, the curtain 5 does not quite reach the closed bottom 6 of the con- I tainer 1.
The lid 2 is provided with a projecting portion 7 i which extends slightly beyond the rim or lip 4 of the lid and 'lies against the top edge 8 of the container 1 thereby ensuring the exact positioningof the lid in relation to the container 1.
FIG. 2 illustrates the lower side of the lid 2 on which side are disposed two rails 9 extending parallel to one another and chordally across the lid2. One end of the rails 9 extends up to the rim 4 whereas at the opposite end the rim 4is broken away to provide an aperture or 1 slot arrangement 10 which provides access to the cross 1 section of the rails 9 whereby the hangers, to be described more fully hereinafter, mounted at the top edge of the ready-made curtain or drape 5, can be introduced to the rails 9.
FIGS. 3 and 4 illustrate, by way of example, a suspending of the ready-made curtain or drape by fitting and gathering devices 11 which are mounted on the top edge of the curtainor drape 5. Such gathering and fixing devices 11 may be of the type illustrated and described in detail and claimed in British application No.
As apparent from FIG. 4, the fixing and gathering devices 11 are provided with hangers 12, each of which may have a bore 13 for insertion of a pair of conventional supporting rollers (not shown). These hangers 12 are undercut at their lower end so as to permit them to be inserted into the rails 9 which have a box-section with a slit 15 being provided in their bottom sides to accommodate the portions 14 of the devices 11.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the two rails 9 are spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the distance between the two hangers 12 of the devices 11 which are joined together by a web 16. Thus, it is possible to sustype described hereinabove in connection with FIGS. 3
and 4; however, in this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 6, pairs of rollers 18 are inserted into the bores 13 provided in the hangers l2 and are introduced into the box-sectioned profile of each of the rails 9. Thus, the fixing and gathering devices 11 extend longitudinally of the rails 9, and it is in this direction in which they are inserted into the curtain rail mounted on the ceiling of a room.
As shown in FIG. 5, portions of the rail 9 are partly interrupted at bends 9awhereby, after insertion of the. hangers 12 into the straight rail 9 the latter can bebent into a shape illustrated in FIG.'5 with the bent rail portions carrying the curtain or drape being subsequently i fastened on the lower side of the lid 2 as shown in FIG. 6.
For the purpose of fastening the bent rail portions to the lid, the rails 9 are provided at their top portion with external flanges 9b which engage behind resilient hooks or lugs 2a provided on the lid 2. By this arrangement and subsequent attachment of the rails to the lid, a favorable utilization of the entire cross-section of the lid 2 is possible. Furthermore, this manner of subsequently attaching the rails 9 to the lid may also be employed to the other embodiments of the present invention.
According to the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIG. 7, a rail 20 of substantially S- shape is disposed on the lid 2 with one end of the rail 20 lying against the inside of the rim 2 whereas the other end lies adjacent an opening or slot 10 provided in the rim or lip portion 4. By employing an arrangement such as illustrated in FIG. 7, ready-made drapes or curtains 5 having devices for fixing folds mounted at the top edge thereof such as, for example, illustrated, described, and claimed in British patent application'No. 26192/73 may be accommodated. These devices, which at their top end are provided with runners or pairs of rollers, can be continuously pushed into the rail of this embodiment as long as adequate length of rail is available on the lid 2 without the diameter of the lid and the container 1 becoming excessively large.
FIG. 8 illustrates a further embodiment of the present invention wherein a rail 21 is mounted on the lower side of a lid 2 which is in the form of an equilateral hexagon with the rail 21 extending substantially circularly.
In a further embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 9, a rail 22 may be provided which extends helically, thereby permitting a good utilization of the cross section of the lid and, consequently, of the cross section of the container.
While the rail arrangements illustrated in FIGS. 2 through 9 were discussed in connection with fixing devices disclosed in two British applications, it is understood that the rails of the present invention can also be employed when other types of hangers are mounted on the top edge of the ready-made curtains or drapes. In particular, the rails of the present invention can accommodate conventional attachment of pairs of rollers or runners which are provided on supporting tapes sewn on the top edge of curtains or drapes. Furthermore, the rails of the present invention are suitable for accommodating a large number of known hangers adapted to be attached by means of clips or the like to the top edge of the curtain or drapes.
Furthermore, while a box-section rail has been described hereinabove, it is also possible to use all the various types of rails normally employed for the numerous types of conventional hangers. For example, in addition to box-shaped T-sections provided with a slit, slit tubular sections may also be employed in which, as in the case of the box-section, the slit may be disposed at the bottom, side, or any other portion of the rail in order to accommodate the configuration ofa particular hanger.
After the curtain or drape 5 has been suspended on the rail or rails 9, 20, 21, 22, the end adjacent the opening or openings 10 may be closed by means of'conventional clamping devices, such as are customarily used for corresponding curtain rails fitted to ceilings or walls, in order to prevent the curtain or drape 5 from slipping accidentally from the rail or rails before the lid carrying the curtain is fitted on the container 1 or after the lid has been removed from the container 1.
When the curtain or drape 5 has been inserted into the container 1 and the lid 2 placed on the latter, it cannot slip off the rails because such rails are brought to a point close against the opening 10 whereby when the lid is on the container, the end of the rail is disposed close up against the inside of the container 1.
So as to improve the stackability of the containers 1 closed by a lid 2, the handle 3 provided on the lid 2 does not project beyond the lid 2, but a recess 23 is provided below the handle in the lid 2 and on the inside at the same time laterally enclosing the rail 9 or 20.
While the rail or rails of the present invention may be made of any suitable material, such material may consist of a thermoplastic material and the rail or rails may be fastened to the lid 2 by adhesive bonding, welding, or clamping. Additionally, the lid 2 and container 1 may be made of an appropriate material, and such material may consist of adequately strong cardboard.
As shown in FIG. 10, in lieu of a substantially rigid container 1, it is also possible to use a bag made of a thin film or the like, in which case the stackability of the packing unit is considerably restricted unless, as indicated in FIG. 10, the bag is inflated with compressed air.
As clearly shown in FIG. 10, the curtain or drape 5 is suspended from a lid 2, which lids correspond basically in construction to the lid illustrated in FIG. 1, with the curtain or drape 5 being suspended from the fixing and gathering devices 11 mounted in the rails 9. To eliminate undesirable creasing of the curtains or drapes, strings 24 are provided in two positions along the length of the curtain or drape with the same being folded over at these points whereby the bag may be relatively short.
In the embodiment of FIG. 10, the bag is tightly pressed against the edge of the lid 2 at the top by means of a rubber band 25 and inflated with compressed air whereby storage in the horizontal position is possible without the curtain or drape being creased.
While I have shown and described several embodiments in accordance with the present invention, it is understood that the same is not limited thereto but is susceptible of numerous changes and modifications as known to those skilled in the art, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details shown and described herein but intend to cover all such changes and modifications as are encompassed by the scope of the appended claims.
