TOOL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,700, dated February 26, 1880. Application tile-ii Dercnllier 20, 1888. Serial Ne. 294,216, 11% model.
Be it known that I, Em ti-uinwnmxa eitizen of the United States of i= .meriea, residing at East Las Vegas, in the eountv ot- San M iguel and Territory of New Mexieo, have invented certain new and useful ln'il'uovements in (our binatiion 'lool- Boxes; and I do hereby deelare the following to be a full, elear, and exact deseription of the invention, sueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refereneebeinghad to the aeeom panvine drawings, and to letters or figures of ret'ereuee marked thereon, whieh form a part of this speeitieation.
My invention relates to new and usel'ul improvements in etnnbinatiou tool and oil boxes adapted to be situated on the right and left sides of engine-Winters, on the right and left side of the coal-pit: and it eonsists in the novel construction and arrangement or eombination of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter deseribed and elaimed.
In boxes of this elassheretofore eonstrueted and employed the chiefdisadvantageeneountered was the eolleetion ot dust, t-inder, and small pieces of eoal therein. the parts of the oil-cups beealne ('loo'e'ed and injured, necessitating the obtaining or others, which in time proves expensive: also, the oil-containing cans were punetured and the oil allowed to escape and be lost and to render the interior of the box tilthv, and the j tools and stored waste beeanio sandy and gritty, requiring" eleansine' before they could All such ineonvenienees have pro- 1 be used. (ineed a loss of time and labor, and the use of the several appurtenances eonstantl incurred great risk of injury to the maehinery,
The object of my invention is to provide a combination-box ot the eharaeter set forth which shall be dust and einder prool, ol praet ieable utility and strength, convenient in form and arrangement, strong and d nrable, readily applicable without special eoust'ruetion, and
inexpensivein manufacture. lnttain thisob jeet by the eonstruetion and arrangement of box shown in the aeeonipanviug t'lrnwings, wherein like letters of reterenee indieate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure-l is a perspective view ol. my int-1 tonsetptentlv 1 proved box, showing the end door thereof i open, the till partially drawn out, and the small lower door raised. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical seetion of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspeetive view of the till removed from the box. l ig. t is a detail section showing the arrangement of the guide-strips for the till.
A int'lirates the outer box, prel'erablv eonst'ruet'ed of wood, though other nn'rt'erials may i be used, and having a door, 1 hine'ed at one i end and openingsidewise. 'lhis door B may be soeured in a elosed position by a suitable hasp and staple. The top of the box has a metallie plate, t, formed with struck-up sides seeured thereto, l'or a purpose whieh will be hereinafter set forth. The interior opposing surl'aees ol' the box have upper and lower guide-strips, o and o, seeured thereto, be tween whieh prt'tjeetions on till areadapted to slide and by which said tilt is supported above the bottom of the box. t 'lhetray 1 isprovidedat l'roni with an opentopped box or reeeptaele, l l, eonsisting'otf the l end pieees or uprights, d, and trout and rear sides, (1 and d, and within the upper rear eorner ot this box E are secured strips 6 and r", \Vlllt'll, in eonneetion with the ends and rear side of box IE, form a smallero ten-topped l box, l l',as \"ullv shown. 'lhe said upright-st] extend only a short distanee rearward Irom the trout end ot the tray or till, and between the rear ends thereof and the rear end of the tray or till a spavee is formed for the reception of variousarticles or devices used in conneetion with a loeomotive-risntrine. The rear end of said till is provided with a cross-strip, d, whieh prevents the artieles whieh may be held between the rear ends of the uprights (Z and said strip (1' Falling ol'l' when the till is withdrawn from the box A.
The lower part of the end ol' the box A, t having the hinged door I is provided with a small hinged door, lfiwhieh is attaehed to a eross-strip, F. arranged between the bottom l of the till and said lower door. This door 1: 3 extends aeross the entire width of the box A i and opens upward, as shown in Fig. 1. The said door I" e4numunieates with a lower eloni gated eom 'ntrtment formed between the bots tom of the till 1) and the bottom oi' thebox A. In order that the door F may be loeked closethv'ertieal apertures are formed in the strip F and the said door F, and a metallic pin, G, is inserted therein.
The l'eeeptaele E is adapted to reeeive the p'eneral t0uls-wrenehes, eohl whisels, and
hammers; the reeeptzu'le IQ forextra oil-eups.
water-glasses, and such other articles. The reeeptaele formed between the rear of the uprig'lits (I Zilltl the rear strip (1, is for oil eups flfltl enns, measures, and tt'irelies, and the lower ("mnpnrlluent entered lay the luwer small lllHH' is :uluptml in receive lnig'gylmrs illlll lung" wreneln-s, as well as axes, 1)l('l\'. ,:lll(| other tools used in ease ul' neeitlent.
The metallicplate on the top 0t lmx A is adapted to rest it rake or other hot implement thereon, and thereby save the box from being charred.
The many uses to whieli my improved le vice can be readily adapted are selt evitlent, and l (in nut limit myself to any speeinl use.
The doors and hinges in my improvement i 1. A coinhinatiqn tool-box for the purpose set forth, comprising a box proper hav ng t j hinged door at one enrl opening sidewise, :1 till with toul-receptaeles, and a lower trainsversely-arranged hinged (lOOl' u 'iening u wartl and eon'ununieating with it lower (mnpm-tment, substantially as tltSPI'lilGll.
