I aux/ v M .zliiorne UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. TIFFANY, OF' TECUMSEH, MICHIGAN.
CUFF OR COLLAR BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,096, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed July 80, 1888. Serial No. 281,363. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. TIFFANY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Cuff-Holder and N ecktie-I-Iolder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buttons of that class intended to hold separable parts of garments in connection and having means for connecting an outer or inner part of the garment thereto.
The object is to provide a cheaply-constructed button having the elements of strength and compactness, and which may be conveniently attached and detached, when in a cuff or collar, to the coat-sleeve or shirtsleeve of the garment or to the necktie.
I have fullyillustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view in elevation, the position of the pin when engaging thegarment being shown in dotted lines over the head of the button. Fig 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail of the pin. Fig. 4 is a side view of the stem of the button and guideplate for the pin. Fig. 5 is a top plan view, and Fig. 43 is a bottom plan view. Fig. '7 is aperspective of the button. I Fig. 8 is a perspective of the button with the holdingpin removed.
Reference being had to the drawings, A designates the shoe of the button; B, the stem of the button and guide-plate of the pin; 0, the head of the button, and D the pin. The shoeA consists of a substantial piece of metal formed with a slot, 1, in which the foot of the stem B is secured with a portion, as 2, projecting beyond the face of the shoe and leaving at each end of the slot an opening, 3, through which the pin is projected and traverses. The stem consists of a piece of metal of more than a semicircle, having the upper part out off, as shown, and rigidly secured to the under face of the head, and to make the connection more secure by permitting the edges of the button-hole to meet. The middle of the stem is cut out, as at i. This construction also gives a better finger-hold when inserting the button. At points in the head, registering with the line of travel of the pin around the stem, are formed holes 5 6, through the latter of which the latch part of the pin travels in its course over the head, setting with its point in the former when reaching the limit of its course in that direction. The stem B has formed on its circumferential edge a groove, 7, in which the pin lies when in place on the button.
The pin D consists of a metallic pin shar ened at one end and bent into a form of more than a semicircle, substantially as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. On the pin toward its blunt end is formed a lug, 8, constituting a thumb-piece, by which the pin maybe moved about the stem, being limited in its movements by the lug 8 lodging against the face of the shoe at either end.
The pin D is arranged in connection with the button to lie in the groove on the stem and part projecting below the shoe, and to travel in the holes through the shoe and head, with its point to lie over the head when used to attach an outer fabric to the cuff or collar.
hat I claim is l. The combination, with a collar or cuff button having a head and shoe each formed with oppositely arranged and registering apertures, of a reciprocable fastening-pin arranged in said apertures, and adapted to lie with its point over the face of the head when thrust to the limit of its forward movement, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a collar or cuff button having a head and shoe formed with oppositely arranged and registering apertures and a stem formed with a groove on its edges, of a reciproeable fastening pin arranged in said groove and through the said apertures, and adapted to move with its point back and forth over the face of the head, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
3. The colla-r-buttmi herein described, consisting of a head and shoe formed with apertures, a stem having a groove in its edges, and a fastening-pin having a finger-lug arranged in said groove and through the apertures, and adapted to move back and forth over the face of the head, substantially as de scribed, and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two attesting wit- HGQSQS.
