To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILE KARL BAOYERLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jett'erson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of heaters which may be used for both heating and cooking purposes; and it consists in the several features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
, The object of my invention is to furnish a heater adapted primarily to the use of a specially-prepared fuel, the composition of which will be the subject-matter of a separate application, which requires no chimney or pipe for draft or smoke escape, and may be moved from place to place in an apartment or railroad-car, as desired.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1. is a side perspective view of the heater. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on a medial line from front to rear, showing interior arrangement and construction. Fig. 3 a detail view of the plate separating the hot-air drum and cold-air drum. Fig. a is a plan view of the bottom of the heater. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on a medial line from side to side of the top of the heater after the cap has been taken oft.

The reference-letter A denotes the outer body or case of the heater.
B is the removable cover or cap of the heater, which may have a central opening in its top, in or over which may be fitted the re movable water-reservoir C.
D is a cold-air drum at the bottom of the heater and rising a little way up its sides, having openings (1 (Z (Z in its bottom, which is also the bottom of the heater, and having a close cover, on which the pan (1' rests.
E is an airtight hot-air drum resting on D and surroumiling the inside of the case of the heater, having pipes e ee eonly the upper ends of which are shown in the drawingspassing through it vertically from top to bot tom, connecting the cold-air drum D with the circulation and combustion chamber F.
F is a circulation and combustion chamber divided into two compartments by the grate L, and formed by the walls of the cold-air 6o drum D, the hot-air drum E, the heater-case A, and the cap 13.
G is a gas-killer consisting of an air chamber or flue, closed at the top and. open at the bottom, placed vertically against the walls of the hot-air drum inside the combustion-chamber F, extending nearly the full length of the hot-air drum, having near its top two longitudinal openings, g g, into the upper compartment of the chamber F, while it opens at bottom into the lower compartment'of said chamber just above the ashpan (1'.
II is a gas-escape pipe, passing through the gas-killer G at 7L and behind it through the hot-air drum to a point lower than the grate, and then outward at right angles, projecting beyond the case A, and provided on the outside with a damper, h.
I represents a flat plate of metal, which separates the cold-air drum ,D from the hotair drum E, and serves as a bottom forE and a top for D, perforated with holes e e c e for the pipes e c e c, and having a central aperture M, in it corresponding in dimensions to the horizontal sectional area of the chamber F.

hen it is desired to start a fire in the heater, the cap B is removed and the fuel is placed on the grate and the lire applied by means of a spccially-prepared lighter, the composition of which will be the subjectmatter of another application. The top is then replaced, the dampers f and 7L and the apertures (Z (Z (Z in the bottom opened, and a rubber tube attached to the pipe 11 outside the heater. The tube is carried to the fireplace or to the outside of the apartment by the window or door, in order to carry olt' what fumes may arise from the lighter. As soon as the fuel is well lighted, the rubber tube may be removed and the damper h closed. \Vhen it is desired to keep the fire for some time without replenishing, the dampers K and f should be closed.
When it is desired to use for cooking a heater of the pattern shown in the drawings, the water-reservoirC is removed and a tin or sheet-iron oven substituted for it. For cooking purposes however, a lower heater constructed with the same features and combination of parts will be more convenient.
In my heater the shape of the outer case and of the corresponding interior parts may be altered to suit convenience or taste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a heater for heating and cooking, the 3 combination, with the case A, provided with handles, of the removable cap B, the coldair drum I), having apertures (Z (Z d in its bottom, the air-tight hot-air drum E, the combustion-ehamber F, the pipes e e e e, passing 40 through the hot-air drum and connecting the cold-air drum with the combustion-chamber, the gas-killer flue G, and the gas-escape pipe H, substantially as set forth.
2. In a heater for heating and cooking purposes, the combination of a combustion-chamber divided into an upper and lower compartment by grate-bars, an air-tight hot-air drum, a cold-air drum connected with the combustion-cha'nber by pipes passing through the hot-air drum, and a gas-killer flue, closed at top and having apertures into the upper compartment of the eombustion-chamber and open at the bottom into the lower compartment of said chamber, substantially as set forth.
