7 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures BAG BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to a bag especially adapted for campers, travellers, seafarers, and other persons for convenience and accessibility in packing garments and the like.
2. Description of the Prior Art Various types of luggage including bags have been constructed of cloth such seabags and knapsacks which have been made out of canvas and the like. These previous bags have had problems due to the fact that there is limited accessibility to the contents thereof when fully packed requiring most of the contents to be removed to obtain articles packed early and disposed near the bottom.
On the other hand when such seabags or knapsacks are only partially filled, these bags become unweildy and difiicult to carry and are unattractive in appearance.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention overcomes the disadvantage of the prior art by providing a bag which has an extended position where it may be filled from either of two ends and wherein all the material packed becomes much more available. On the other hand, if only a small amount need be packed the bag can be collapsed to approximately one half its extended size. The bag employs two tubular portionswhich are interconnected by a single transverse wall and has various handles for conveniently closing and carrying the bag.
The objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a multi-purpose bag that is simple in construction, capable of being manufactured out of various readily available materials, and which is attractive in appearance while being convenient to use.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention, which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this bag, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. I is a perspective view of the bag shown in its extended position according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken along the plane of line 2--2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a enlarged sectional detail view illustrating the single beam used to secure the main portion of the bag together and forming an important feature of the invention;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a bag according to the invention in a collapsed position;
FIG. 5 is an elevational view of the bag in a collapsed position; and
FIG. 6 is a top plan view of the bag looking along the plane of line 6-6 in FIG. 5.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral It) generally designates a bag constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention.
The bag 10 includes tubular portions 12 and 14. Each of the tubular portions 12 and 14, as can be seen best in FIG. 2, are formed of a single sheet of material which are secured together by way of a single seam through edges of the sheet of material from which the tubular sections 12 and 14 are made. The tubular portions 12 and 14 are provided with open ends 18 and 20 which are formed by the edge of the material being folded back upon itself to form hem portions 22 and 24 secured by seams 26 and 28 for reinforcing the open ends 18 and 20. A plurality of grommets 30, 32 extend through the hem portions 22 and 24 and one of each of the grommets 30 and 32 are provided with loop members 34 and 36 which extend therethrough and which are adapted to receive thereon in successive order the other of the grommets 30, 32 respectively for closing the open ends of the bag 10 after the bag has been filled.
One of the important features of the invention is par ticularly illustrated in FIG. 3. Herein it will be noted that the tubular portions 12 and 14 are secured to each other and to a two-ply transverse wall 40 by a single seam 42 which extends through the tubular portion 14, then through the tubular portion 12 and thereafter through the double-ply transverse wall 40. The transverse wall 40 thereby divides the bag into two articlereceiving receptacles so that the bag may be packed fully yet all of the articles in the bag are more readily accessible since they will be within half of the bags capacity.
Secured to the inner surface of the tubular portions 12 is a strap 44 having a clip 46 thereon which is adapted to extend through a loop 34 to hold the open end 14 in a closed position. A handle 48 is provided which is sewn at 50 to the tubular portion 12 and at 52 to the tubular portion 14 and extends therebetween for easy hand carrying of the bag when in the extended position as shown in FIG. 1. A shoulder strap 54 is provided which is sewn as at 56 to the tubular portion 12 and as at 58 to the tubular portion 14 and terminates in clips 60 and 62 for engagement with the loops 34 and 36 to hold the open ends in a closed position.
The tubular portion 12 may be collapsed so that it surrounds the tubular portion 14 in the position as shown in FIG. 4. In this position the strap 44 is now on the outside for securement purposes. There is sewn to the transverse wall 40 a handle 60 by suitable stitching as at 62 and 64 which holds the two-ply transverse wall 40 together and which enables the bag to be conveniently carried when in the collapsed position as shown in FIG. 4. A flap 66 may be provided for safeguarding the interior contents of the bag as may be desired and a pocket 68 closed by a slide fastener may be sewn on the inside surface of the tubular portion 12 so that it is on the outside when in the collapsed position as shown in FIG. 5. It is to be understood that when in a collapsed position, the shoulder strap 54 which is no longer necessary is conveniently concealed between the tubular portions 12 and 14.
A latitude of modification, substitution and change is intended in the foregoing disclosure, and in some instances some features of the invention will be employed without a corresponding use of other features.
I claim:
l. A bag comprising a first tubular portion and a second tubular portion each having an open end, transverse wall means secured to said tubular portions so that in an extended position said wall means forms a divider between said tubular portions and in a collapsed position said wall means, forms a base with said second tubular portion being disposed within said first tubular portion, a handle on said wall means, and fastening means for said open ends secured to said tubular portions.
