Abstract

A cutter for cutting mitred edges on clay tile. The cutter has a flange for guiding it along the edge. The cutting of the mitre is effected by a taut wire extending between the flange and a bridge mounted at right angles to the guide.

In forming certain structures where tiles or other similar articles are to be put together at an angle to one another by means of mitre joints difficulty can arise in accurately cutting the mitre edges. It is an object of the present invention to overcome this drawback.
A cutter for cutting mitred edges on clay or similar materials comprises a guide for engagement with the edge to be mitred and means for supporting a tensioned wire in a position so that when the guide is moved along the edge the wire cuts the mitre.
In one convenient arrangement the guide means comprises a rectilinear flange, and conveniently a cross piece is arranged at right angles with respect to the guide and from which the wire extends to the guide. In this case the cross piece may be provided with a finger grip.
The guide may form one side of a channel section body and in this case the other side of the channel section body may form a second guide with respect to which a second tension wire is supported and which may be disposed at a different angle to the first mentioned wire. For example, one wire may be arranged to cut 45 mitres and the other wire 30 or 60 mitres. The cross member may extend between the two wires and a single wire may be anchored at its ends and tensioned by a tension spring, which may be conveniently located within the channel section body.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIG. 2 is a cross-section along the line 22 of FIG.
3, and, FIG. 3 is an underneath plan view of the cutter shown in FIG. 1.
The cutter shown in the figures comprise a channel shaped body 1 the upper surface of which is provided with a cross piece 2, of inverted channel section and the sides 3 of which are provided with ribs which in combination with the spaces 5 between them form finger grips. I
The cross piece 2 extends beyond the sides of the channel member 1 the end indicated at 7 projecting further than the end indicated at 6. The ends of the base of the channel are recessed into generally V shaped notches as shown at 8 and 9.
The centre of the cutter is provided with a bolt 10 tightened by a wing nut 11 and which serves to secure the ends of a wire 13 by means of an opening in the bolt through which the ends of the wire are passed, and which are tightened in the bolt and between the head of the bolt and the top of the cutter.
The wire 13 extends along the base of the channel to the V notched ends 8 and 9, and then on each side first and second portions of the wire extend downwardly at an angle to enter an opening 14 and 15 respectively in the sides 16 and 17 of the body 1.
The wire is tensioned by a tension spring 18. The extent of the projection of the cross piece beyond the sides 16 and 17 of the body determines the angle the wire makes with the side and hence the mitre angle. In the example shown the wire makes a 30 angle with the side l6'(to cut a mitre) and a 45 angle with the side 17.
In operation when it is desired to mitre the edge of a slab of clay the side of the slab is presented to the side of the channel and the cutter is then run along-it to cut off the clay to provide a mitred corner. The angle of the corner can thus be either 45 or 60 according to which side of the cutter is used. It will be appreciated that it is possible to vary the angle and provide any required angle. Thus in a modification the cross piece 2 may be movable with respect to the member 1 and a scale could be provided to indicate the angles which could be mitred.
I claim:
1. A cutter for cutting mitred edges on clay or similar materials comprising:
guide means for engagement with the edge to be mitred and means for supporting a tensioned wire in a position so that when said guide means is moved along the edge the wire cuts the mitre,
said guide means comprising first and second guides fonned from two rectilinear sides of a channel section body,
said wire including a first portion adjacent said first guide and a second portion adjacent said second guide,
said first and second portions being disposed at different angles relative to the rectilinear sides of said channel section body.
2. A cutter according to claim 1 wherein said wire is anchored at its ends and is tensioned by a tension spring.
3. A cutter according to claim 1 wherein said first wire portion forms an angle of 45 with said first guide to form 45 mitred edges.
4. A cutter according to claim 3 wherein said second wire portion forms an angle of 30 with said second guide to form 60 mitred edges.
5. A cutter according to claim 1, and further including a cross piece arranged at right angles to said guide means and from which said wire extends to said guide means.
6. A cutter according to claim 5, wherein said cross piece is provided with a finger grip.
7. A cutter according to claim 5 wherein said cross piece extends between said first and second portions of said wire.

Claims (7)

1. A cutter for cutting mitred edges on clay or similar materials comprising: guide means for engagement with the edge to be mitred and means for supporting a tensioned wire in a position so that when said guide means is moved along the edge the wire cuts the mitre, said guide means comprising first and second guides formed from two rectilinear sides of a channel section body, said wire including a first portion adjacent said first guide and a second portion adjacent said second guide, said first and second portions being disposed at different angles relative to the rectilinear sides of said channel section body.
2. A cutter according to claim 1 wherein said wire is anchored at its ends and is tensioned by a tension spring.
3. A cutter according to claim 1 wherein said first wire portion forms an angle of 45* with said first guide to form 45* mitred edges.
4. A cutter according to claim 3 wherein said second wire portion forms an angle of 30* with said second guide to form 60* mitred edges.
5. A cutter according to claim 1, and further including a cross piece arranged at right angles to said guide means and from which said wire extends to said guide means.
6. A cutter according to claim 5, wherein said cross piece is provided with a finger grip.
7. A cutter according to claim 5 wherein said cross piece extends between said first and second portions of said wire.
