Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC HALDEMAN, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,307, dated April 28, 1863.
ing the manner in which the sides and ends of the tub or reservoir are dovetailed together.
In Fig. 1, A represents the end of the rubber-frame, which is semicircular in form, scalloped at the upper edge, A, is suspended on gudgeons, which play in vertical serrated boxes c let into theinside of the tub B, and is operated by the handle C. The handle is placed midway between the two heads of the rubber A, and passes downward through two ties that bind the heads of A together. The frame-work of B is fastened securely by dovetailing the sides into the ends marked d d, extending far enough beyond the sides of B to form a shoulder for the legs to rest against, the legs being also secured 4to B. A groove is cut into B at the sides for the reception of g, which constitutes the end of the tub. When g is forced into this groove, the upper edge rests against d, and it extends to the bottom of the tub B at an angle of more than fortyve degrees. Its lower edge rests on the bottom, (marked f,) which is dovetailed into the sides ot' B.
By this mode of fastening my machine to 4gether nails or screws are rendered unnecessary, and yet a tub is formed entirely free from leakage.
The design of the serrated boxes (marked a) is to adjust A at any point desired, the spaces between the teeth heilig concave to fit the gudgeons, and the concaves on the opposite edges of a corresponding with each other. The gudgeons nd a bearing at any point between the top and bottom of a., and can be operated accordingly.
h represents the truncated rollers, of which there is a series in the rubber A and another series in the tub B, both series arranged in a semi-circle, those on A sufciently far from those on B to admit of the rubber A playing freely backward and forward. The rollers in both cases revolve on iron rods running horizontally through their center, those in B extendingacross B and resting in holes made to receive them.
To effect the object designed by the rollers h they must be arranged both in the upper and lower series in such a manneras that half the series in each case will have their base point-ing to the right and the other half to the left, taking care that the base of those in A should point in the opposite direction to those in B, and that the base of those in A should be opposite to the center of the rollers in B. By this arrangement it will be observed that one-half ofV the opposing rollers is brought sufficiently near to press the water out of the clothes, while the space between the other half-is great enough to admit of their free absorption of water. This rapid process of alternate absorption and expulsion of water great-ly facilitates the cleaning of the material subject to its action.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The serrated boxes c, for the purpose herein fully described.
2. The construction and arrangement of the truncated rollers h, in the manner herein set forth.
3. The boxes c, combined with the rollers h, and the manner of constructing the tub B, the whole arranged substantially as herein set forth.
' [n testimony that I adopt the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC HALDEMAN.
