LAMPA 'Patented Apr. 1Ql 1888.'
JAMES e. EALLAsoE WATEEEUEY, CONNECTICUT, AssiCNoE/To s.V ELwooD l' MAY, oE NEW YORK, N Y.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,009, dated April 1o, laca.' Application filed A1 ril 4,1?87. Se1ialNo.233,11. (Nonorlel'.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJnMEs G.. HALLAs, ofy
I willdescribe in detail a lamp embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in aclaim.V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is ya side view of alamp embodying the improveasL ment, certain parts being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper part of the .wick-tube and the'collars which are combined therewith. Fig. Sis ahorizonta'l section'of the wick-tubes and appurtenances thereof. This section is not taken directly in one plane, but at the exterior of the burner is taken at the plane of the dotted line v m, Fig. 1, justabove the outer collar, which is combined with the wick-tnbe for catching overflowing oil, andat the centralportion is taken above the inner collar, which isl combined with the wick-tube for the same purpose.
Similar letters of reference designate corren sponding parts in all the figures.
I will only describe those features of the lamp which embody my improvement.
' A A2 designate, respectively, the louterand the inner walls of an annular wick-tube. They are arranged one outside the other, and the outer one is sufciently largerthan the inner to afford aspace between it and the inner for the accommodation of a circular wick, B.
C designates a collar made in the shape of a gutter and extending around the exterior surface of the outer wall, A', of the wick-tube.
C2 designates a collar extending around the inner surface of the inner wall of theWick-tube and made gutter-shaped. l n,
The two walls A A2 of the wick-tube andthe collars C C2 willpreferably be made of sheet metal. The'collars C C? are bent or' made to extend inwardlyat the loweredges, so as to fit snuglyaround the surfaces of the walls of the .l
wick-tube with which they are combined. `At the extreme lower edges theyare secured by solder or analogous means to the surfaces around which they extend. Each of these collars is continuous .or endless. .I mean by this thateach extends entirely around the wall of the wick-tube with which it is'combined. At
the upper edges vthe collars are located at a ternal circumferentialgroove,e. This groove` forms an annularprojection on the outer surface of said distributer. A diaphragm, f,hav ing a ange atits outer edge adapted toengage the said annular groove; extends between said air-distributor and the outerywall of the wicktube. 'The portion of saiddiaphragin adjacenty to the wick-tube is provided with an upwardly. turned flange fitting loosely about thewick# tube. The upper edge of this liange is turned outwardly or away fromthe wick-tube, in order that oil descending along the exteriorof the ,short distance from the surfaces aroundwhich they extend, so that'sp'aces or gutters will be Atoutin'idl-` i se outer wall of the wick-tube'maypassbetween" y said vupwardly-turned liange and the wick-jv tube. v Oil, after passing .between said np-y wardly-turned flange and-the wick-tube, w'illd i descend into the gutter formed by the collar O. Thelwalls of the wick-tube are provided with the collars C C2 extend. f l
Any oil overiiowing the wiclvtube at the tip and runniug'down the exterior surface of ythe perforations a a at the portions around kwhich outer wall, A', or the interior surface of the innerlwall, A, will be caught by the collar C` or C2, and will flow thence through the perforations a or a? back through lthe wicktube and intothewickB. j My improvement obviates thelowing of oil over lamps, or the running of oil from lamps v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
onto'tablesor other varticles upon which the lamps may be placed, and withal ata very slight expense.k l K ,.k
It will be seen that the chimney-gallery, the deflectors, and the air-distributers are all supported upon the annular shoulderd on the collar C'. By this means contact with the wicktube is avoided and the escape of oil through the perforations in the lower part of the airdistributer is guarded against. At the same time the parts are braced or stayed against lateral or rocking movement.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The eon1bination,with a lamp having an annular wick-tube, of a collar surrounding the outer wall of the Wick-tube near its lower end so as to form an open-topped gutter, and pro- JAMES G. HALLAS.
