8 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures aaezassz PATEN'B'ED MAY 2 3197s DUAL LINE BOWSTRING SERVER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to serving devices and more particularly to a novel and improved dual line server for serving bowstrings and the like.
Archers frequenctly make their own bowstrings using a server which serves a line or thread on core strands. One server commonly in use has a generally U-shaped frame with opposed side arms between which a supported a spool of line with the line paying out through a serving head portion in the form of an aperture in a portion of the frame upon the rotation of the assembly about the core strands. In this form the spool of line is mounted for rotation on a bolt with washers at each end and a nut is threaded in the end thereof. Among the disadvantages of this prior art form of server is that there is no way to satisfactorily adjust the tension on the line during pay-out and the tension may vary if the nut becomes tighter or loosens as the spool is rotated. Without the proper tension on the spool, the server tends to pull away from the bowstring while the serving is being carried out or not rotate freely. Another disadvantage of this prior art form resides in the fact that the server is an unbalanced weight about the serving point so that the server moves irregularly during serving and does not readily spin about the core strands, Moreover, such prior known bowstring serving devices are gener ally adapted for serving a single line.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a novel dual line bowstring server which maintains a substantially constant or uniform selected amount of tension on each serving spool.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel bowstring server wherein a serving head portion adapted for engaging the bowstring is approximately at the center of gravity of the server whereby upon its rotation about the core strands, it remains in contact with the strands and will spin through a plurality of rotations in a balanced rotary manner about the strands.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a novel bowstring server in which more than one line is served simultaneously during each revolution thereof around the core strands.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a novel dual line bowstring server generally characterized by having a frame with two spool support sections arranged generally at right angles to one another each having flexible, deformable, opposed arms with bearing means supporting the associated spool of line for rotation under a relatively constant, uniform tension, the tension being adjustable by deforming the opposed arms and bearings relative to the ends of the spools.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the present invention in a preferred form shown there is provided a frame constructed of an elongated strip of flexible, deformable metal. The frame includes a pair of generally U-shaped sections each having a pair of opposed support arms with a longitudinal axis thereof disposed at substantially right angles to one another. An intermediate portion of the frame is shaped to form a notched serving head portion including a discharge aperture for the wrap lines located at a juncture of the free ends of opposed adjacent support arms and also has an intermediate section connecting the opposed free ends of the other support arms of the U-shaped section. An inwardly extending tab portion on the intermediate section has an aperture to form a guide for the line between the two spools. Opposed bearings on each of the support arms support a spool of line for rotation. The tension is adjustable by moving the opposed support arms toward or away from one another but once set at a particular position, a substantially uniform tension is applied to the spools. The center of gravity of the frame and spools lies along a line extending between the tab portion and discharge aperture whereby there is provided a substantially balanced rotation of the assembly about the core strands.
Other objects, advantages and capabilities of the present invention will become apparent as the description proceeds taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a bowstring server made in accordance with the present invention and shown in an operative relation to the core strands of a bowstring being formed;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the server shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the axis of one of the spools of thread;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view along the tab portion for guiding two wrap lines from the spools;
Referring now to the drawings, the bowstring server shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is forming a bowstring generally designated B comprised of a plurality of longitudinally extending core strands S suitably supported at the ends and upon which two wrap lines T1 and T2 are simultaneously being served or wrapped side by side as the server is spun or rotated around the longitudinal strands.
In general, the server shown comprises a spool support frame generally designated by numeral 12, supporting for rotation two spools 13 and 14 wrapped with lines T1 and T2, respectively. The spool support frame 12 comprises two similar generally U-shaped spool support sections 15 and 16 on which there is carried the spools 13 and 14, respectively. Each spool support section is of a corresponding size and shape and specifically with reference to spool support section 16 each comprises a pair of opposed spaced apart side arms .designated 16a and 16b and a generally V-shaped end portion designated 16c connecting the outer ends of the opposed side arms 16a and 16b. The free ends of the adjacent inner arms of the two U-shaped sections 15 and 16 extend at right angles to one another and are joined together at a common juncture 18 with a central discharge aperture 19 formed therein for the lines to form a serving head through which both of the wrap lines T1 and T2 pass. While a single aperture 19 is shown it is understood that a separate aperture for each wrap line may be provided at juncture 18. The frame also has a linearly extending outer side section 20 connecting the remaining free ends of the outer side arms of the U-shaped sections.
In the preferred embodiment shown, the frame 12 is constructed of a single strip of flexible, deformable metal about one inch wide bent to the configuration shown with the end portions of the strip extending inwardly and normal to the outer side section 20 to form a tab portion 21 provided with an aperture 22 for each wrap line. The tab portion 21 with apertures 22 form a line guide means to direct the line away from both spools. The overlapping portions of the strip are con- 3 nected by rivets 23 or a tack weld or the like toform a unitary frame.
The side arms of each U-shaped section of the frame.
spherical shaped bearing face and are suitably fastened along a flat outer face thereof to the inner face ofthe frame as with a rivet 27 which is fixedly secured to the bearing and extends through an aperture inthe frame.
and has a flattened head 27a on the outer side thereof. Each spool has a throughbore and each end thereof fits over the adjacent bearing surface providing a generally circular area of contact surface between a spool and bearing member. The tension on each spool is adjusted either by moving the arms of the frame inwardly to tighten the tension on the associated spool or spreading them apart to reduce the tension on the associated spool. In any event once the arms are positioned at a selected setting the tension remains substantially constant as the spool unwinds and pays out the line.
The frame spools l3 and 14 are arranged such that the serving head portion or .more specifically the discharge aperture 19 is located at or near the center of gravity of the entire frame and spool assembly. As shown in FIG. 2, line A-A passes through the center of gravity'of the assembly and line B-B passes through the discharge aperture 19 so that the aperture 19 is located very near the center of gravity of the assembly and is preferably slightly inside or inwardly oftthe discharge aperture 19. Moreover, the center of gravity of the frame and spool assembly is located along a line extending between the tab portion 21 and the discharge aperture 19 and is disposed adjacent and inwardly of the frame.
Referring again to FIG. 1, in a full sequence of opera tion for the above described server the opposed friction bearings are positioned a selected distance apart to provide the desired amount of tension on the associated spool. The line is threaded through the guide aperture 19 and discharge aperture21 and is intertwined with the core strands S with the serving head portion in engagement with the core strands. The entire assembly is then spun or rotated around the strands causing the spools to unwind simultaneously as it advances along the core strands whereby two threads T1 and T2 are simultaneously wrapped side by side on the core strands S to form the bowstring B.
