UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.,
GEORGE K. KNOWLTON, OF HAMILTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKIMVIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,236, dated August '7, 1888.
Application filed April 10, 1888. Serial No. 270,201. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE K. KNowLToN, of Hamilton, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, haveinvcnted a certain new and useful Improvement in Skimmers, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figures l and 2 are perspective views of my improved skimmer represented as in position for use; and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section of the body or holder, the handle being represented as broken off.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of skimmers which are employed for skimming or draining vegetables during the process ofcooking, and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a more effective and otherwise desirable article of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the body of the skimmer and B the handle, these parts being preferably composed of tin or sheet metal. The body proper, fr, consistsof a circular plate, which is concave in vertical cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, and provided with drainholes z, said plate being` secured to one end of the handle B by rivets c in the usual manner. A vertically arranged semicircular strip of metal, f, provided with perforations in the same manner as the plate rv, is secured to the rear edge of said body at the right of the handle B by brazing or other suitable means. A dat perforated plate, 7L, is secured to the upper edge of the shcetf, forming with said sheet and the plate x a drain cup or receptacle for containing the vegetables or other articles to be drained.
Vhen skimmers constructed in the ordinary mannerare used, the plate x is inserted under the article to be drained, which is then lifted on said plate above the liquid.
In the case of certain vegetables-such as peas, beans, Ste-the grease in the water in whichl they are cooked causes a thin film to form over the holes z, thus preventing the water from passing freely through them. To remove this lm and enable the water to pass through the holes, it is customary to shake the skimmer, thereby causing a portion of its contents to be spilled and fall back into the cooking-vessel or onto the floor. To obviate this objection, and also to increase the capacity of the skimmer, I make use of the perforated semicircular strip f and semicircular foraminous plate h, for forming, in connection with the plate ma draining-cup, in which the peas or vegetables 7c may be held and drained, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby enabling the skimmer to be shaken without danger of spilling them, as described. Morever, by constructing the skimmer with the drain-cup a much larger quantity of vegetables can be drained at a time than by the ordinary method.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim isl. In a skimmer, the combination of a handle, a perforated dish-shaped plate secured to said handle, a semicircular perforated strip of sheet metal secured vertically to the edge of said plate, and a semicircular perforated plate secured to the upper edge of said strip, substantially as set forth.
2. In a skimmer, the handle B, in combination with the dish-shaped perforated plate w, semicircular perforated strip f, and semicircular perforated plate h, said plates and strip being secured together to form a skimmer provided with a draincup, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a foraminous dish-shaped skimmer having a handle and provided at one side with a foraminous drain-cup for receiving the vegetables from the skimmer and holding them while being drained, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE K. KNOVL'ION.
