6 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures legato 6p IiIiIIiilI I BACK TROUSER POCKET TEMPLATE 7 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to the construction of trousers, and more particularly to means by which to facilitate the marking of back trouser panels for the inclusion of back pockets.
In the construction of trousers having back pockets, it is a generally accepted practice to mark on each trouser back panel. the position and dimensions of the back pocket opening and darts, manually by the use of a ruler and tailors pencil, chalk or other marking means. This procedure not only is susceptible of error, resulting in the costly waste of cloth, but also is tedious and time consuming.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In its basic concept, this invention provides a perforated and marked template by which the location and dimensions of back pocket openings may be marked on back trouser panels with speed, accuracy and facility.
It is by virtue of the foregoingbasic concept that the principle objective of this invention is achieved;
namely, to overcome the aforementioned disadvan-- tages of prior marking procedures.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a template of the class described for marking on trouser back panels the proper location and dimensions of back pockets of various widths. Still another important object of this invention is the provision of a template of the class described which also includes means for'marking on trouser back panels the proper locations and dimensions of darts associated with the back pockets.
A further important object of this invention is to provide a template of the class described which also affords the marking on pocket lining material the proper location and dimensions of the pocket opening corresponding to those of the associated trouser back panels.
A still further important object of this invention is the provision of a template of the class described which is reversible to afford marking of backpocket openings on both trouser backpanels.
The foregoingand other objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of a preferred embodiment.
v BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF-THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a plan view of ajtemplate embodying the features of this invention.
FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 arefragmentary plan views showing the template in sequential positions of adjustment for marking on a trouser backv panel the locations and dimensions of the pocket opening and darts associated with a back pocket.
FIG. 5 is a plan view showing the template in position for marking the pocket opening on pocket lining mate rial to be incorporated with the trouser back panels of FIGS. 2-4.
FIG. 6 is a plan view similar to FIG. 2 but showing the template inverted and in the initial position of adjustment on the other trouser back panel.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring primarily to FIG. 1 of the drawing, the template includes a flat plate 10, preferably of transparent material for the purpose described hereinafter, and preferably of rectangular shape having a longitudinal dimension defined by the longitudinally spaced, parallel transverse edges 12 and 14 and a transverse dimension defined by the side edges 16 and 18. The plate preferably is substantially rigid, as by being made of glass or relatively thick synthetic plastic. However, it may be made of thin, flexible plastic sheet material. If
transparency is not required, the plate may be made of which are spaced apart longitudinally to define the top and bottom welt edges of a back pocket. The top edge 20 is spaced from the transverse edge 12 of the plate a distance equal to the desired distance between the top welt edge of the pocket and the top edge of the trousers (FIGS. 2 and 6).
Associated with the welt marking opening in the plate is means for establishing the desired width of the back pocket. For this purpose reference is made to the alternative form of means illustrated in FIG. 1. Thus, to the left of a selected center line.24 the welt marking opening is extended to any desired length and a plurality of markings 26, 28 and 30 are printed, embossed, engraved, or otherwise formed on the plate at transversely spaced intervals to'indicate the corresponding terminal end of the pocket opening for any. one of a plurality of widths of back pockets. In the embodiment illustrated, indicia are associated with the markings 26 and 30 to identify pocket widths of five and 'six inches, respectively, with the intermediate marking 28 obviously representing a pocket width of five and one-half inches.
The alternative means illustrated to the right of the selected center line 24 in FIG. 1 involves the termination of the right hand end of a welt marking opening at the five inch marking 26'. It will be understood that this marking 26' is spaced two and one-half inches to the right of the center line 24, while the associated five inch marking 26 is spaced the same distance to the left of the'center line. The right hand markings 28' and 30 for five and one-half and six inch width pockets are associated with narrow longitudinally elongated openings 32 through the plate.
- It will be understood that both ends of the welt mark ing opening may have associated therewith either of the forms of pocketwidth indicator means described.
The template includes means for positioning one end of the pocket opening a desired distance inward of the adjacent edge of a trouser back panel to be marked. In the embodiment illustrated, this means is provided by a plurality of slightly arcuate, longitudinally extending lines 34 spaced laterally outward from one end of the welt marking opening. Each of the lines is associated with a corresponding one of the width markings 26, 28' and 30 atthe adjacent end of the welt marking opening. Thus, the inner line 34, identified by the indicia 5", is associated with the five inch marking 26'. The intermediate line 34 is associated with the intermediate marking 28', and the outer line, identified by the indicia 6", is associated with the outer marking 30'. The lines 34 are spaced apart the same distance as the markings. Accordingly, the transverse distance between each line and its corresponding marking is the same.
It will be apparent that the template may be provided with a single width welt marking opening and a single edge guide marking 34 for marking on-a trouser back panel the proper position and dimension of a given width of back pocket. In such event the welt marking opening may have a transverse length equal to the transverse width of the pocket opening, in which case the pocket width indicator means is provided by the opposite terminal edges of the opening. The arrangement illustrated is preferred for its versatility in marking the position and dimensions of back pockets of diverse sizes. The edge guide markings 34 also may be provided on the plate to the left of the welt guide opening. However, the duplication is not necessary when the plate is made of transparent material, as will be understood.
Preferably, the template also includes means for marking on a trouser back panel the locations and sizes of darts to be incorporated in the trouser. In this regard it will be recognized by those skilled in the art that the number of darts to be provided may vary with different sizes and styles of trousers. Most require one dart extending from the mid-point of the upper welt of the pocket opening to the upper edge of the trouser, or two darts spaced apart equally to opposite sides of said midpoint.
Accordingly, the plate is provided with a plurality of dart position indicator markings. The center dart markings include the broken lines 36 and 38 which originate at the mid-point of the upper edge of the welt marking opening and diverge therefrom to the transverse edge 12 of the plate. The solid line 40 bisecting the angle of the diverging broken lines is a continuation of the selected center line 24 discussed hereinbefore.
To the opposite sides of thecenter dart lines are additional lines forming a pair of dart position indicators.
Each of these includes a pair of broken lines 42 and 44 which originate at a point at the upper edge 20 of the welt marking opening and diverge to the transverse edge 12.
Generally, a single dart is made larger than a pair of spaced darts. Accordingly, the broken lines 36 and 38 of the center dart position indicator diverge to the transverse edge 12 of the plate at a greater included angle than do the diverging broken lines 42 and 44 for the pair of dart position indicators. 2, The use of the template described hereinbefore now will be explained with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4. Referring first to FIG. 2, the template is placed over the right rear trouser panel 50 with the transverse edge 12 aligned with the upper edge of the panel and a selected one of the edge guide lines 34 aligned with the corresponding right hand edge of the panel. In the example illustrated in FIG. 2, the intermediate edge guide line, corresponding to a five and one-half inch width pocket, is aligned with the right hand edge of the panel.
Marking means, such as a tailors pencil, or chalk, then is used to mark on the trouser panel the outline of the pocket opening. To this end, the pencil is guided by the top and bottom edges 20 and 22 of the welt marking opening to form the top and bottom elongated markings 52 and 54 on the panel (FIG. 4). The left end of the pocket opening is marked by a line 56 with the pencil, in line with the intermediate mark 28 to the left of the center line 24, and the right end of the opening is marked by a line 58 with the pencil by inserting it through the elongated opening 32 associated with the five and one-half inch marking 28'. The unmarked spaces between the right hand ends of the upper and lower markings 52 and 54 and the right hand end marking 58 may be filled in with the tailors pencil, if desired.
Assuming that two spaced darts are to be incorporated in the trousers in association with the five and one-half inch pocket, the tailors pencil is used to make the marks 60 and 62 on the panel, by extending the pencil through the welt marking opening in alignment with the inner ends of the spaced dart position indicators 42 and 44. Then, the template is moved vertically downward a slightdistance, for example about one-half inch, to the position illustrated in FIG. 3. The upper end markings 64 and 66 of the spaced darts then are made on the exposed trouser panel with the pencil in alignment with the spaced ends of the divergent broken lines 42 and 44 of the dart position indicators. The template then is moved to utilize one of its straight edges to interconnect the inner and outer dart markings o the panel (FIG. 4).
The foregoing marking procedure may be repeated for locating the leftback pocket .on the left trouser back panel 70. For this purpose the template is inverted to the position illustrated in FIG. 6, whereupon the marking procedures described hereinbefore in connection with FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 are repeated.
The template also may be used to mark the pocket opening on pocket lining material. Thus, referring to FIG. 5 of the drawing, the template is arranged with the transverse edge 14 aligned with the upper edge of the lining material 72 and with the center line 24 aligned with the longitudinal center line 74 of the lining material. By means of a tailors pencil or other marking means, the upper and lower elongated transverse welt edges and the right and left hand terminal ends thereof are marked through the welt guide opening, in manner previously explained.
In this regard, it is to be noted that the distance between the edge 22 of the welt guide opening and the adjacent transverse edge 14 of the plate is less than the distance between the opposite edge 20 of the opening and the adjacent transverse edge 12 of theplate. This closer spacing is correct for the usual pocket lining construction. If the pocket lining is to be of the tailored type, wherein the pcoket lining extends to the upper edge of the trouser, the template is rotated from the position illustrated in FIG. 5 to align the plate edge l2 'with'the upper edge of the lining material, as will be understood.
The transverse edge 14 of the panelpreferably is pro- I and economical means by which to enable the marking of back pockets on trouser back panels in precise locations and dimensions with speed and facility. By making the template of transparent material it may be utilized, by inversion, to mark the pockets on both back trouser panels, since the markings on the template thus are rendered visible through either side. The transparency of the plate also facilitates alignment on the side edge markings 34 with the corresponding side edge of the trouser panel.
lt will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the size, shape, type, number and arrangement of markings and other components of the template described hereinbefore without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Having now described my invention and the manner in which it may be used, I claim:
1. A template for marking on a trouser back panel the position of a back pocket, comprising:
