Abstract
A resilient door is used in combination with a flexible closure flap to close a transom space, and that is mounted on a header or adjoining structure above the door. Said flap normally rests on or is closely adjacent, the upper edge of the door to close off a room, and has a projecting tongue that is held by two retaining sheets that are cemented thereto, and cemented to each other above said tongue.

Said flap normally rests on or is closely adjacent, the upper edge of the door to close off a room, and has a projecting tongue'that is held by two retaining sheets that are cemented thereto, and cemented to each other above said tongue.
3 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures 1 DOOR IN COMBINATION WITH A TRANSOM CLOSURE FLAP The principal object of my invention is to utilize said transom clap to fill any space above the door, which is a matter of importance where a room beyond the door is refrigerated or heated, orit is otherwise desired to shut off the entrance, or escape, of air. This also provides the economical advantage of using a smaller door by using the fiap to fill in the space above the door,
rather than using a larger door to fill in all the space.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawing, nor to the particular parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my invention.

As illustrated a well-known door is movably mounted in well-known mounting means having a post 14 set in a socket 17 attached to exterior supporting means having a door jamb J. Said door has well-known attaching means at its inner end having an outer attaching member 15 that extends around said post 14 and beyond. Said door has a wooden block 16 next to said post and inwardly of said attaching member 15. The main body of said door is resilient, being formed of a rubber front panel 18 and'a similar rear panel 20 spaced therefrom which extend inwardly to said-post. At the outer extremities of said panels is a rubber nose 26 and a wooden block 24 is retained by said nose. Flexible filler material, such as rubberized hair 22, is inserted inthe space between said panels 18 and 20.
Above said door 10 is a header'I-I forming part of said exterior supporting means. A flexible, transom closure flap 30 is formed of two sheets 30a and 30b most of which are cemented together or otherwise attached, and they extend between twoangle irons 34 and 36 forming part of said header I-l. Said closure flap 30 has an extension 38 that is held between said sheets 30a taken on the line and 30b, preferably being cemented to them. This extension 38 extends below said sheets to the top 40 of said door, preferably making contact therewith, or being closely adjacent thereto.
When said door is forced open or otherwise moved away from its normal position, as by striking the resilient body portion with a truck, said flap extension 38 yields and is moved away from said door. However, upon return of the door said extension 38 returns to normal position, resting on or closely adjacent said top 40.
Since said door 10 is commonly used with another similar door given the numeral 10aa, I illustrate the double door arrangement, the second door having a well-known nose 26a that contacts said nose 26. In this arrangement a second transom closure flap 30aa is provided which is substantially a duplicate of closure flap 30.
Said closure flap sheets 30a and 30b may, for instance, be of rubber that is nine sixty-fourths inch thick, while said extension 38 maybe one-sixteenth inch thick. The space between said two sheets may receive an adhesive except where said extension 38 enter's, and which space may be one-sixteenth inch wide. Said extension may be 1% inches long and should yield freely when the door is struck, hence each said sheet is preferably at least three times as thick as said extension, and both desirably remain in substantially normal position as said extension yields. Thus the transom space above the door is opened only to .the extent that said extension is moved, since there will be little or no movement of said sheets 30a and 30b.
What I claim is:
l. A door in combination with a transom closure flap, supporting means supporting said door and flap and providing a transom space above said door that said flap normally closes, said flap having a resilient extension that extends below the main portion of said flap to a point adjacent the top of said door, said flap having two resilient closure sheets above said extension, the latter extending between said two sheets and being attached to them, each said sheet being at least three times as thick as said extension.
2. A door as of claim 1, said supporting means having two angle members spaced apart, said closure sheets extending-between and being respectively attached to angular portions of said angle members.
3. A door as of claim 1, the comparative thickness of each said sheet relative to said extension being such that the latter will yield when said door is struck to open it while said two sheets remain in substantially normal position.
Claims (3)
1. A door in combination with a transom closure flap, supporting means supporting said door and flap and providing a transom space above said door that said flap normally closes, said flap having a resilient extension that extends below the main portion of said flap to a point adjacent the top of said door, said flap having two resilient closure sheets above said extension, the latter extending between said two sheets and being attached to them, each said sheet being at least three times as thick as said extension.
2. A door as of claim 1, said supporting means having two angle members spaced apart, said closure sheets extending between and being respectively attached to angular portions of said angle members.
3. A door as of claim 1, the comparative thickness of each said sheet relative to said extension being such that the latter will yield when said door is struck to open it while said two sheets remain in substantially normal position.
