Abstract

AN AGENT FOR PREVENTING SEIZING-UP IN PLASTIC ZIP-FASTENERS COMPRISING A HOMOGENIZED MIXTURE OF A CHLORINATED HYDROCARBON AND A DRY-IMPREGNATING AGENT.

Description

United States Patent Qfice 3,785,978 AGENT FOR PREVENTING SEIZDIG-UP IN ZIP-FASTENERS Horst Uhlich, 3 Prilzwalkerstr, 1000 Berlin, Germany No Drawing. Filed May 10, 1971, Ser. No. 141,989 Int. Cl. (110m 1/32 US. Cl. 252-50 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An agent for preventing seizing-up in plastic zip-fasteners comprising a homogenized mixture of a chlorinated hydrocarbon and a dry-impregnating agent.
When garments fitted with a zip-fastener, more particularly one of plastic material, are cleaned, more especially by chemical means, the members and the slide closing the members of the fastener very frequently jam or seize up, so that the usual smooth operation of the fastener is no longer ensured. Violent attempts to operate the fastener even cause risk of destroying the fastener and damaging the fabric.
It has now been found that this fault can be eliminated by using a lubricant which allows smooth operation of the fastening elements Without soiling the cleaned fabric.
Lubricants and abrasives are in themselves known but are used in oily or watery emulsion form and easily incline to soil the adjacent fabric parts, which makes them unsuitable for use in the present case.
The lubricant in accordance with the invention is a mixture of a chlorinated hydrocarbon such as perchlorethylene and a dry-impregnating agent comprising a fatty acid ester or a melamine-formaldehyde synthetic resin modified with a hydrocarbon wax such as paraffin. The chlorinated hydrocarbon serves as a carrier for the dryimpregnating agent.
The mixture preferably contains three parts of chlorinated hydrocarbon to one part of dry-impregnating agent and is homogenized at 50-60 C.
3,785,978 Patented Jan. 15, 1974 The lubricant is applied carefully before or behind the slide, which may be of plastic or metal material, so that on operation the slide spreads the lubricant evenly over the individual fastening elements, which allows proper working of the fastener.
What is claimed is:
1. A method for preventing seizing-up in zip fasteners comprising:
forming an admixture consisting essentially of 3 parts of a chlorinated hydrocarbon and 1 part of an initially dry impregnating agent; and
applying an effective amount of the admixture to a zip-fastener.
2. A method as set forth in claim ll wherein said chlorinated hydrocarbon is perchlorethylene.
3. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein said impregnating agent is a fatty acid ester.
4. A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein said impregnating agent is a melamine-formaldehyde synthetic resin modified with a hydrocarbon wax.
5. A method as set forth in claim 3 wherein is included the step of homogenizing said admixture prior to the application of the same to said zip-fastener.
6. A method as set forth in claim 4 wherein is included the step of homogenizing said admixture prior to the application of the same to said zip-fastener.
