Such adjustment or calibration of the drum upon the shaft enables the operator of the machine to produce copies of neat, balanced appearance, including adequate spacing of the imprinted matter from headings, or other matter previously printed on the copy sheets without changing the location of the master sheet upon the drum. There are certain such adjusting means in use, but which are bulky and cumbersome to manipulate and include relatively complex levers and linkage connections for effecting the relative adjustment between the drum and the driven shaft. This invention is directed to providing a new and improved, simplified means for providing relative adjustment between the master carrying drum and its driven shaft in a duplicating machine.
In the exemplary embodiment of the invention, a simple eccentric means is provided, rotatably mounted, on
the master carrying drum for movement bodily there- I with as the drum rotates with the driven shaft, but for selective rotation relative to the drum. An abutment member is provided on the driven shaft in position for engagement by the eccentric means on rotation thereof relative to the drum to provide angular adjustment between the drum and the driven shaft. The eccentric means and the abutment member comprise the coupling means between the drum and the shaft. More particularly, a drive bracket is mounted on the driven shaft with a pair of angularly spaced ears extending generally radially outwardly from the shaft. An eccentric is mounted on the master carrying drum for movement bodily therewith and for selective rotation relative thereto about an axis generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum and its driven shaft. The eccentric is nested between the ears of thedrive bracket whereby selective rotation of the eccentric relative to the drum causes the eccentric to bear against one of the ears and thereby cause relative rotation between the drum and the driven shaft, thus angular adjustment therebetween.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to the drawings in greater detail, the invention herein relates to duplicating machines, particularly of the fluid type, which includes a master carrying drum 10 which cooperates with an impression roll (not shown in the drawings), in known manner, for pressing copy sheets against the master as the drum is rotated. The present invention particularly relates to means whereby the drum l0 and a master-thereon can be adjusted arcuately through a suitable are upon a driven shaft 12, thereof, for effective placement of the imprinted matter upon copy sheets at a selected spacing of the printed matter from the ends of the sheets.
More particularly, the adjusting means includes a drive bracket, generally designated M, mounted on the driven shaft 12 by means of a stud, generally designated 16 (FIG. 3), having a tapered shaft portion 16a and a threaded portion 16b. The tapered shaft portion 16a is received in a complementary tapered bore 118 in the driven shaft 12 and the threaded head portion 16b is received in an internally threaded bore 20 in a drive bracket hub portion 22. which is fixed to the drive bracket M. The drive bracket M has a pair of angularly spaced ears 2% extending generally radially outwardly from the driven shaft 112.
A thumbwheel 26 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 28 which is fixed to a mounting plate 3% secured to the drum 10 by a mounting bracket 32 (lFlG. 1). In this manner, the thumbwheel 26 is mounted on the drum 10 for movement bdily with the drum as the drum rotates with the driven shaft H, but the thumbwheel 2 is mounted for selective rotation about its own axis defined by shaft 2s mounted to the drum. it can be seen in FIG. 3 that the axis of shaft 28 is generally parallel to the axis of the driven shaft 112.
Formed integrally with the thurnbwheel 26 and protruding axially inwardly thereof is an eccentric 34 which is nested between the axially protruding ears of the drive bracket M. With this structure, it can be seen that selective rotation of the thumbwheel 26 (and the eccentric M thereon) relative to the master carrying drum causes the eccentric to bear against one of the ears 2% of the drive bracket M, thereby causing relative rotation between the drum and the driven shaft 12 t0 which the drive bracket M is fixed. Such relative rotation provides for angular adjustment of the drum on the driven shaft 12 to adjust the head margin on a sheet of copy paper fed to the drum.
FIGS. 1 and 2 show two different positions of the drive bracket 14 and thumbwheel 26-eccentric 44 to provide for varying head margins on sheets of copy paper.
The eccnetric is shown in FIG. 1 in a generally central diposition with the eccentric and thumbwheel oriented vertically as shown in FIG. 5. FIG. 2 shows a different position wherein the thumbwheel has been rotated in the direction of arrow A causing the bulk of the eccentric 34 to move to the right as viewed in FIG. 2 causing the drive bracket 14 to move clockwise in the direction of arrow B relative to the master carrying drum 10. To facilitate easy rotation of the thumbwheel 26, the outer periphery thereof is provided with serrations 36, resembling gear teeth, to provide friction engagement with an operators finger, or the like. Access is provided to the thumbwheel through a recess 38 formed in the drum 10.
Means is provided to lock the thumbwheel 26, and its eccentric 34, in a selected position against rotation relative to the drum 10. More particularly, the lock means includes a slide member 40 positioned over the outer end of the shaft 28 by means of an elongated slot 42 whereby the slide member 40 is mounted on the drum for generally radial reciprocating movement between locking and unlocking positions. The mounting plate 30, which is fixed to the drum 10, has a pair of angularly spaced guide flanges 44 to guide the slide member 40 in its radially reciprocating movement. The slide member 40 has a series of teeth 46 formed on the inner face 48 (FIG. 3) thereof and extending radially outwardly from a shoulder portion 50 formed integrally with the slide member. The teeth46 are provided for interlocking with the teeth on the thumbwheel 26 when the slide member 40 is in the positions shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 to thereby lock the thumbwheel and the eccentric against rotation relative to the drum 10.
A leaf spring 52 is mounted on a bracket 54 fixed to the mounting plate 30, with the leaf spring 52 bearing against the underside of the slide member 40 to bias the teeth 46 of the slide member into locking engagement with the teeth on the thumbwheel 26. Thus, it is apparent that when an operator desires to adjust the drum relative to the driven shaft 12, by rotating the thumbwheel 36 and thus the eccentric 34, he must first push down on the locking slide member 40 in the direction of arrow C (FIG. 2) to move the slide member out of its locking position as shown in FIG. 1 to its unlocking position shown in FIG. 2. In the position shown in FIG. 2, the teeth 46 on the locking member 40 and the teeth on the thumbwheel 26 are disengaged to permit the thumbwheel to rotate andforce the eccentric 34 into engagement with one of the ears 24 of thedrive bracket 14. When the slide member 40 is released, the spring 52 will bias it back (in a direction opposite that of arrow C) to its locking position shown in FIG. 1.
An offset indicator tab 60 is fixed to the drive bracket 14 and is exposed through an appropriate recess in the end of the drum 10 to indicate the position of adjustment between the drum and shaft 12.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for cleamess of understanding only and no necessary limitations should be understood therefrom as some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a duplicating machine which includes a drum mounted on a driven shaft for rotation therewith for carrying a master copy, coupling means between the drum and driven shaft for providing selective arcuate adjustment of the drum relative to the driven shaft to adjust the head margin on a sheet of copy paper fed to said drum, comprising a drive bracket mounted on said driven shaft with a pair of angularly spaced ears extending generally radially outwardly from said shaft, and an eccentric means mounted on said drum for movement bodily therewith and for selective rotation relative thereto about an axis generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum and driven shaft, means to selectively lock said eccentric against rotation relative to said drum comprising a slide member reciprocally mounted on said drum for movement between locking and unlocking positions, and means defining complementary interlocking surfaces on said eccentric and said slide member when the slide member is in Us lock-' ing position, said eccentric means being nested between the ears of said drive bracket whereby selective rotation of the eccentric relative to the drum causes the eccentric to bear against one of said ears and thereby cause relative rotation between said drum and said driven shaft.
2. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 including means normally biasing said slide member to its locking position.
3. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said eccentric means is mounted for rotation on a shaft extending generally parallel to said driven shaft, and said slide member is mounted on said shaft for movement generally perpendicular thereto by means including a slot through which the eccentric shaft extends, said slot being elongated in the direction of reciprocating movement of said slide member.
4. In a machine as set forth in claim 3 including means on said drum to guide said slide member in its reciprocating movement.
5. In a duplicating machine which includes a drum mounted on a driven shaft for rotation therewith for carrying a master copy, means for arcuately adjusting the drum relative to the driven shaft to adjust the head margin on a sheet of copy paper fed to said drum, comprising an eccentric means mounted on said drum for movement bodily therewith and for selective rotation relative thereto about an axis generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum and driven shaft, an abutment member fixed to and protruding radially outwardly from said drive shaft for abutment by said eccentric means on rotation thereof relative to the drum 'to cause relative rotation between said drum and said driven shaft and thus angular adjustment therebetween, and means to selectively lock said eccentric against rotation relative to said drum comprising a slide member reciprocally mounted on said drum for movement between locking and unlocking positions, and means defining complementary interlocking surfaces on said eccentric and said slide member when the slide member is in its locking position.
6. In a machine as set forth in claim 5 wherein said eccentric means is mounted for rotation on a shaft extending generally parallel to said driven shaft, and said slide member is mounted on said shaft for movement generally perpendicular thereto by means including a slot through which the eccentric shaft extends, said slot being elongated in the direction of reciprocating movement of said slide member.
7. In a machine as set forth in claim 6 including means on said drum to guide said slide member in its reciprocating movement.

Claims (7)

1. In a duplicating machine which includes a drum mounted on a driven shaft for rotation therewith for carrying a master copy, coupling means between the drum and driven shaft for providing selective arcuate adjustment of the drum relative to the driven shaft to adjust the head margin on a sheet of copy paper fed to said drum, comprising a drive bracket mounted on said driven shaft with a pair of angularly spaced ears extending generally radially outwardly from said shaft, and an eccentric means mounted on said drum for movement bodily therewith and for selective rotation relative thereto about an axis generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum and driven shaft, means to selectively lock said eccentric against rotation relaTive to said drum comprising a slide member reciprocally mounted on said drum for movement between locking and unlocking positions, and means defining complementary interlocking surfaces on said eccentric and said slide member when the slide member is in iJs locking position, said eccentric means being nested between the ears of said drive bracket whereby selective rotation of the eccentric relative to the drum causes the eccentric to bear against one of said ears and thereby cause relative rotation between said drum and said driven shaft.
2. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 including means normally biasing said slide member to its locking position.
3. In a machine as set forth in claim 1 wherein said eccentric means is mounted for rotation on a shaft extending generally parallel to said driven shaft, and said slide member is mounted on said shaft for movement generally perpendicular thereto by means including a slot through which the eccentric shaft extends, said slot being elongated in the direction of reciprocating movement of said slide member.
4. In a machine as set forth in claim 3 including means on said drum to guide said slide member in its reciprocating movement.

In a duplicating machine which includes a drum mounted on a driven shaft for rotation therewith for carrying a master copy, means for arcuately adjusting the drum relative to the driven shaft to adjust the head margin on a sheet of copy paper fed to said drum, comprising an eccentric means mounted on said drum for movement bodily therewith and for selective rotation relative thereto about an axis generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum and driven shaft, an abutment member fixed to and protruding radially outwardly from said drive shaft for abutment by said eccentric means on rotation thereof relative to the drum to cause relative rotation between said drum and said driven shaft and thus angular adjustment therebetween, and means to selectively lock said eccentric against rotation relative to said drum comprising a slide member reciprocally mounted on said drum for movement between locking and unlocking positions, and means defining complementary interlocking surfaces on said eccentric and said slide member when the slide member is in its locking position.

In a machine as set forth in claim 5 wherein said eccentric means is mounted for rotation on a shaft extending generally parallel to said driven shaft, and said slide member is mounted on said shaft for movement generally perpendicular thereto by means including a slot through which the eccentric shaft extends, said slot being elongated in the direction of reciprocating movement of said slide member.
7. In a machine as set forth in claim 6 including means on said drum to guide said slide member in its reciprocating movement.
