UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IVILS ON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN AOE'IIG ACID COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEIV JERSEY.
CLAMP FOR WOOD-SAWING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,909. dated January 3, 1888.
Application filed June 30,1887. Serial No. 243.030. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN VVILsN,acitizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for VVootLSawing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled [O in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters andiigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of an improved clam p device for holding wood on the feedingiable of a cuttingoff sawingmachine of any kind, but more particularly such as consist of a gang of circular saws employed for cutting bundles of sticks into short lengths for kindling-wood, as hereinafter fully described,
reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sawing- 2, machine provided with my improved clamp device, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. The bench a, saws b, and feed carriage 0 may be of any ordinary contrivauce.
My improved clamp consists of a strong 0 wire, (I, having a loop or eye, 0, in each end, the hook or an eye, f, on the back part of the carriage, and the ratchet-lever g at the front edge of the carriage, the clamp -wire being connected by one end to the ratchet-iever and by the other end to the hook or eyef, and one of said connections, and preferably the latter, being detachable, so that when the pile of wood, It, to be sawed has been duly arranged on the carriage it may be bound fast by hooking on the clamp-wire atf and then straining the wire tight and making it fast by the lever g, pawl h, and ratchet i, the lever with its pawl being free to turn, but the ratchet being stationary. Thus I provide a clamp of very sim- 5 ple eontrivance, by which a bundle of sticks may be held as immovably as one stick, the clamp being adapted for being applied and operated with but very little hinderance or delay to the work. It is especially adapted for use in gang sawing machines, where the out pieces must be held intact between the saws while being withdrawn therefrom to be discharged. In such machines a clamp will be employed between each two of the saws, and there may be one at each outer extremity of the gang, if preferred. \Vhen employed in agang machine, the levers and the ratchets are preferably mounted on a shaft, j, that is suitably attached to the front of the carriage, the levers being fitted to turn freely on the shaft, the ratchets being keyed or otherwise made fast to the shaft, and the shaft attached so thatit will uotturn; but any other arrangement may be employed.
Although I have described and represented the pawl-lever and pawl as the contrivance for straining and fastening the clamp-wire I do not mean to belimited to that alone, for it will be readily understood that other contrivances may be employed-as a spring that may be stretched with a lever and hooked onto the clamped wire and then be let free to recoil and draw the wire tight; nor do I mean to be 1i mited to wire clamps, as cords, chains,or straps of leather may be used.
What I claim, and desire to seeureby Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the clamp-wire and clamping -lever, pawl, and ratchet with the feed-table of a sawing machine, the clamp- 8) wire being detachably connected at one end, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the saws and feed table of a gang sawing-machine, of a woodholding clamp between each two of the saws, consisting of the clampwvire and clamping-lever, pawl, and ratchet, the clamp-wire being det-achably connected at one end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofIalfiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN \VILSON.
