SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettera Patent No. 362.601, dated May 10. 1887.
Application tiled February 9, 1F87. Serlnl No. 227.015." (No model.)
TogaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BRETZFIELD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Belts, of which the following is a. specification. The object of my invention 'is new and improved ladys belt which is' so constructed and ornamented that either face can be worn on th outside, both faces being embossed or ornamcnted.. The invention consists of a belt made f one or two thicknesses of leather, and having both faceshighly finished and embossed, and combined with reversible buckles held on the ends of the belt, all as will be fully described and. set forth hereinafter,.nnd tinally pointed outl in the claim.
In the drawings, 'Figure 1 is a fa'ce view ot' part of mviruproved belt, showing one faeeon Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the other face on theouiside. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the belt shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 4'is a cross sectional view ofthe belt. Fig. is a cross-sectional view of a modiieation. y l,
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts.
The beltis made of two layers of leather, A andB, which arc stitched together nt or adjacent to thecdgcs. The outer face of each strip 0f leather A and B is highly finished nnd or' namented by means of a design embossed on said face. As shown in Figs. l and 2, the dcsgn on the opposite 'faces ot' the belt are diiibn the same ornaments may be embossed on both faces of the belt; but iu all enses both faces must be finished, so that either can be worn on 'the outside, thus ren dering the belt capable of being reversed and at all times presenting a handsome np' pearauce Both faces may have the same color, or may beef diderent colors. For instance, the fare shown in Fig. 2 may be colored the same as alligator leather and the face shown in Fig. 1 maybe made black, or vice versa..
td provide a If desired, the belt maybe niadeof single thickness of leather, as shown in Fig. 5, In this case, also, both faces arenished and both faces are embossed, and also have the same or a different design.
As the bncklesinust bc reversed at the same time as the belt is, said buckles must be cnpa ble of being detached very readily, and forthat reason cannot be sewed on the belt.
The buckle-plates C and D, of which the formeil has ahook, E, and the latter a slot, F,
are both provided at the ends with' jaws G, between which a clamping-lever, H, is pivoted,
said clampinglever having a handle piece, I,
and a toothed ridge, K. 'By swinging the haudlepeuc I toward the surface of. the belt,
and passing the belt under the chimpingsleverl the toothed ridge K is pressed into the belt, and the buckleplate is thus held securely Ion the sume. the' buckle-plates have to lbe turned, which is by moving Athe handle-piece I of the clamping-lever,away from the belt. The
When thcbelt is to be reversed,.-
end of the belt is withdrawn and reversed, and then the handlelev er is pressed 'down signin on the inner surface of the-buckle-plate. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure b v LettersPaten`t- The combination, with a. ladysbelt having both faces highly tinishcd and provided with different vembossed ornaments or designs, of adetnchnble buckle-plate clamped on each end of the belt, which bnrkleplates are provided with pivoted clnmpinglevers, with toothed ridges l'or holding the plates on the ends of the belt, thus permitting 0l' detachi ng said buckleplatcs and reversing them, whereby the salue buckle-plates can be used on the ends of the belt with either face of the belt on the outside, substantially as shown .and described.
In testimony that I clailu the foregoing as my invention Ihavc signed my name in presence of -two subscribing witnesses".l
SAME. BREllZFlELD. NVitnesses: i l OSCAR F. Gonz,
SIDNEY MANN.
