An object of the invention is the realization of a simple and economical means for realizing the aforementioned conversion and also for providing an accessory drawer in such a sewing machine.
V A specific advantage of the base member according to this invention is its simplicity of construction and consequent low cost relative to heretofore known analogous base members.
The objects of this invention generally are realized through the expedient of using a bent sheet material upon which are provided guide and locking means for a drawer. Further, said guide and locking means are realized through bending and shearing operations performed upon the sheet material.
In order to form the base member from a plate member upon which shearing operations have been performed, successive bending operations are effected to obtain:
a base having an upper wall which in turn has a first portion adapted to come laterally adjacent to the upper wall of the sewing machine cylindrical base;
the base upper wall having a second portion adapted to register with the free end of said cylindrical base, this second portion having a width equal to the width of the first portion combined with the width of the upper wall of the cylindrical base;
a vertical surface connected with said upper wall and having a guide groove along its entire lower lengthwise extent, for an accessory drawer;
a second vertical surface as long as said upper wall second portion;
a lower horizontal wall as long as said upper wall second portion of which it is a continuation;
a T-shaped groove centrally in said lower horizontal wall, previously formed by a shearing operation, which groove serves as a further guide and as a locking means for the accessory drawer which is fitted through the free end of the base member into the space defined between the vertical and horizontal walls of said member, a vertical wall of said drawer thereby closing the open end of said base member.
Not mentioned advantages and objects of the invention will be clearly seen from the following description which is referred to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is an isometric view of a sewing machine having the inventive base attachment applied thereto;
FIG. 2 is an end elevation view of the inventive base attachment;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the inventive base attachment showing the guide and locking means for the drawer;
FIG. 4 illustrates the drawer in its position for being removed from the base attachment;
FIG. 5 illustrates the position of the drawer so that it may be pulled out to an open position without being detached from the base member;
FIGS. 6, 7, and 8 are respective detail views showing different positions of the guide means and the cooperating means on the drawer, corresponding respectively to the working positions illustrated in FIGS. 3, 4, and 5.
Referring to the drawings, the machine base plate 10 supports the machine 11 which comprises in usual fashion a cylindrical horizontal base 12 from which vertically extends a standard 13 which in turn supports a horizontal upper arm 14 generally parallel to base 12. A sewing head 15 at the free end of arm 14 encloses the members which drive needle bar 16 and presser bar 17.
The present invention refers specifically to base attachment member 18 which serves as a base extension member for converting the cylindrical base l2 to a flat or planar base. Accessory drawer I9 is incorporated within said extension member 18.
According to the preferred mode of realization as illustrated in the drawings, the member 18 is of a plate material which has undergone successive bending operations to present (see FIGS. 1 and 2) an upper wall 20 having two portions 21 and 22 of difierent width, a vertical wall 27, a lower wall 31, and a second vertical wall 32.
Side 23 of smaller width portion 21 lies adjacent to side 24 of the cylindrical base I2 when the base member is in working position, while the side 25 of the larger width portion 22 lies adjacent to end wall 26 of the base 12. Portion 22 is equal to the combined widths of base 12 and portion 21. A retaining element 40, in a known and not shown manner, locks the base member 18 to the base 12.
Vertical wall 27 (FIGS. 2, 3, 4, and 5) is faired into upper wall 20 and includes a guide channel 28 along its entire lower lengthwise extent, in which channel a sliding member 29 is engaged. The sliding drawer member 29 is located along the lower portion of the drawer l9 and forms a continuation of the drawer vertical wall 30.
The other vertical wall 32 of the base member, which also is faired into upper wall 20, continues along its lower extent to form the lower wall 31 parallel to upper wall 20. Said lower wall 31 includes a T-shaped groove 33 which serves as a further guide means and locking means for the drawer l9. Said groove 33 is engaged by a first projection 34 on the lower wall 35 of the drawer I9 and further by a rectangular second projection 36 in said lower wall 35.
Said first projection 34 (FIGS. 3 to 8) comprises a rectangular web 37 ending in a larger rectangular wing portion 38. Said root 37 and said second projection 36 are both of lesser width than the groove 33 while the wing portion 38 is wider than the groove normally provided therefore, a means adapted to couple drawer 19 to base member 18.
The wing portion 38, however, is smaller in cross-section than the enlarged end opening 39 of groove 33 so that the wing portion 38 can be disengaged from the groove to enable complete detachment and removal of the drawer from the base member 18, as illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 8.
The second projection 36, which is longitudinally aligned with the groove 33, falls into said groove and abuts against first wall 42 thereof when the drawer is fully inserted into base member 18, and serves to prevent unwanted opening of said drawer, as by vibration during operation of the machine. In the fully closed position, end wall 41 of drawer 19 serves to close the open end of the base member 18. In order to open the drawer it is only necessary to first lift the front end thereof, as shown in FIG. 5, so as to lift projection 36 out of groove 33.
In order to completely detach and remove the drawer, it is only necessary to push it in all the way and to lift the rear end thereof, as shown in FIG. 4, so as to lift the wing portion 38 out of opening 39 in groove 33. The drawer may then be pulled outwardly avoiding, however, any interference between projection 36 and the groove 33.
When the base member 18 is mounted on the sewing machine, the latching means 40 engages a suitable, not shown, seat on cylindrical base 12 while side 25 of upper wall portion 21 comes to rest against edge 24 of the base 12, and finally the entire lengthwise extent of channel 28 rests against the upper surface of the machine base plate 10. v
Various details presented herein are of course merely exemplary of the possible modes of realizing the inventive concept which can be realized and applied to structural arrangements other than that illustrated herein.
