Abstract
The invention relates to a window latch with a lockable bolt axially slideably mounted in a housing. The locking means for the bolt is a keyless combination lock incorporating rotatable slotted annular locking collars located in the bolt housing and disposed coaxially around the bolt. The bolt in the locked position is received in bolt receiving means, there being a pivotable latch on the bolt receiving means which has a surface having a co-operative relation with a tapered surface on the housing so that when the bolt is in the locked position the latch holds the bolt receiving means and housing securely together.

According to the invention there is provided a window latch having a sliding bolt and an integral keyless combination lock by means of which the bolt may be held in a locked position. I
According to the invention furthermore, a window latch in which the heads of the screws which secure the bolt housing and bolt receiver to a window casement and a window frame are so disposed as to be covered by the bolt housing and bolt receiver when the bolt is in the .locked position.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a window latch and its location on a window frame and casement;
FIG. 2 shows a perspective view of the window latch with the window ajar;
FIG. 3 shows exploded perspective views of the bolt and bolt receiver units;
FIG. 4A shows a vertical section through 4-4 in FIG. 1, with the bolt in its extended locked position;
FIG. 4B shows a vertical section through 44 in FIG. 1 in which the bolt is in its unlocked retracted position; and
FIGS. 5A and 5B show a vertical elevation view and a plan view of a further embodiment of the invention.
FIG, 1 shows the location of the latch and the type of window for which it is suitable, together with a full size perspective view with the window closed.
The basic principle of this lock can also, as shown in FIG. 5, be incorporated into the design of a bolt which would be suitable for use on old type sliding windows or glass panelled doors.
Although of simple operation and construction these devices would be highly effective in securing windows and doors where access to the latch or bolt can be easily gained by breaking a pane of glass.
Referring specifically to FIGS. 2 and 3 the receiver A is secured to the window frame by means of screws B and the bolt housing F is located by screws J onto the window casement.
The latch C when moved into the horizontal position should remain in this position without swinging back under its own weight, the required degree of friction is obtained when tightening the screw D.
The bolt assembly comprises bolt E, bolt housing F actuating bolt G and locking collars H. The complete assembly being secured to the window casement by screws J.
Referring to FIG. 4A the latch is shown in its locked position with bolt E engaged in the hole in the receiver A. FIG. 4B shows the bolt E in its disengaged position and the locking collars in their unlocked position.
In order to operate the bolt the correct combination of letters and/or numbers on the outside of the locking collars H has to be lined up with the datum line on the bolt housing F. This will enable the projections L on the bolt E to pass through the slots K in the inner surfaces of the locking collars thus allowing the bolt E to be slid axially into or out of engagement with the receiver A by means of the actuating button G. Rotation of the locking collars away from the correct combination will lock the bolt in either its engaged or disengaged position.
When the bolt E is in its disengaged position as shown in FIG. 4B, the window can be opened or closed as required by means of latch C which operates by the conventional method of engaging on a tapered face M. To allow for misalignment when fixing to the window frame and casement, the bolt hole in the receiver A is somewhat larger than the diameter of the bolt, therefore when the window is closed and locked the latch should be engaged against the tapered face of the bolt casing, so as to ensure that the window frame is tight against the window casement to prevent rattling and to avoid draughts.
The disposition of the screws which locate the latch on the window frame and casement is such that they are inaccessable when the latch is locked. This prevents the latch from being unscrewed from the window frame and casement when the window is locked.
Referring to a second embodiment of the invention as shown in FIG. 5 the combination lock as fitted to the window latch previously described, can also be incorporated into the design of a conventional door bolt thus providing a lockable bolt which is suitable for doors and old type sliding windows.
I claim: 1. A window latch comprising: housing means; bolt means axially slideably mounted in said housing means; bolt receiver means; 7 an integral keyless combination lock means on the housing means capable of locking said bolt means in a first position in said housing means, in which first position axial sliding motion of the bolt means out of the bolt receiver means is prevented, said integral keyless combination lock means also being capable of allowing said bolt means to be withdrawn to a second position in which said bolt means is withdrawn from said bolt receiver means; pivotable lever arm means provided on the bolt receiver means and having a surface for engagement with a complementary surface of the housing means to releasably hold the housing means and bolt receiving means together when said bolt means is in said first position; said integral keyless combination lock means comprising a plurality of collars disposed coaxially with said bolt means and mounted in said housing means, said bolt means also comprising lug means protruding from the surface thereof, and said plurality of rotatable collar means each including surface slot means, said lugs each being adapted for engagement with one of said plurality of rotatably collar means in said first position, whereby to move said bolt means axially from said first position to said second position said rotatable collar means are rotated so that said slot means are in alignment with each other and with said lug means so that the bolt means when engaged in said bolt receiver means in said first position can be withdrawn to said second position; and wherein heads of screw threaded means which secure said housing means and said bolt receiver means to respective ones of a window casement and a window frame are so disposed as to be covered by said bolt receiver means and said housing means in said second position of said bolt means.
' 2. A window latch having a sliding bolt, a bolt housing, a bolt receiver and an integral keyless combination lock by means of which the bolt may be locked, in which the heads of the screws which secure the bolt housing and bolt receiverto a window casement and a window frame are so disposed as to be covered by the bolt housing and bolt receiver when in the locked position, in which the bolt may be prevented from axial displacement by means of two or more collars disposed coaxially with the bolt in the bolt housing, the bolt being provided with lugs on its side which are engageable with the collars so as to prevent axial movement of the bolt, slots being provided in part of the collars so that when the slots are aligned with each other and with the lugs the bolt may be moved in an axial direction, and in which a pivotable lever arm is provided on the bolt receiver and is adapted to engage the bolt housing to hold the receiver and bolt housing together.
Claims (2)
1. A window latch comprising: housing means; bolt means axially slideably mounted in said housing means; bolt receiver means; an integral keyless combination lock means on the housing means capable of locking said bolt means in a first position in said housing means, in which first position axial sliding motion of the bolt means out of the bolt receiver means is prevented, said integral keyless combination lock means also being capable of allowing said bolt means to be withdrawn to a second position in which said bolt means is withdrawn from said bolt receiver means; pivotable lever arm means provided on the bolt receiver means and having a surface for engagement with a complementary surface of the housing means to releasably hold the housing means and bolt receiving means together when said bolt means is in said first position; said integral keyless combination lock means comprising a plurality of collars disposed coaxially with said bolt means and mounted in said housing means, said bolt means also comprising lug means protruding from the surface thereof, and said plurality of rotatable collar means each including surface slot means, said lugs each being adapted for engagement with one of said plurality of rotatably collar means in said first position, whereby to move said bolt means axially from said first position to said second position said rotatable collar means are rotated so that said slot means are in alignment with each other and with said lug means so that the bolt means when engaged in said bolt receiver means in said first position can be withdrawn to said second position; and wherein heads of screw threaded means which secure said housing means and said bolt receiver means to respective ones of a window casement and a window frame are so disposed as to be covered by said bolt receiver means and said housing means in said second position of said bolt means.
2. A window latch having a sliding bolt, a bolt housing, a bolt receiver and an integral keyless combination lock by means of which the bolt may be locked, in which the heads of the screws which secure the bolt housing and bolt receiver to a window casement and a window frame are so disposed as to be covered by the bolt housing and bolt receiver when in the locked position, in which the bolt may be prevented from axial displacement by means of two or more collars disposed coaxially with the bolt in the bolt housing, the bolt being provided with lugs on its side which are engageable with the collars so as to prevent axial movement of the bolt, slots being provided in part of the collars so that when the slots are aligned with each other and with the lugs the bolt may be moved in an axial direction, and in which a pivotable lever arm is provided on the bolt receiver and is adapted to engage the bolt housing to hold the receiver and bolt housing together.
