Abstract
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO PACKAGING MEANS FOR AN ARTICLE DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH ANOTHER COMMERICALLY AVAILABLE TYPE OF ARTICLE, AND PROVIDES MEANS FOR ATTACHMENTS OF THE TWO IN A UNITARY PACKAGE.
Description
May 23, 1912 MORTIMER RUSSELL DOCK United States Patent US. Cl. 229- 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to packaging means for an article designed to be used with another commercially available type of article, and provides means for attachment of the two in a unitary package.
The present invention relates to a packaging structure whereby related articles which are independently packaged and which may be purchased separately, are combined in a unitary package by insertion of one of said packages in an integral compartment provided on one side of the other of said packages.
Specifically, this invention provides for the packaging of filters for optional attachment on cigarettes, in a container having a pocket on one side thereof, said pocket being of such conformation as to permit insertion therein of a package of commercial cigarettes of any brand the user may prefer, thus keeping the filters and cigarettes conveniently available and requiring the handling of only a single unit comprising the filters and cigarettes.
Filters that are made for optional attachment to cigarettes are conveniently packaged in boxes having approximately the length and width of conventional cigarette packages and being approximately one-half the thickness of said cigarette packages. On one of the flat sides of the filter box, an accordion pleated auxiliary compartment, or pocket, is provided, integral with the filter box, which is the primary container. The foldable walls constitute the sides and bottom of the compartment; the top is open, for convenient insertion therein of a package of cigarettes.
The primary container has a longitudinally slidable drawer in which compartmenting means are provided for maintaining the contents in oriented relationship.
Thus, this invention provides a rapid, easy means for attaching a package of filters to a pack of cigarettes with which they are to be used, and permits easy vending of single filters as required without disarranging the filters remaining in the drawer.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- FIG. 1 is a perspective View of the package, having the auxiliary compartment fully extended to accommodate a package of cigarettes;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the package and the auxiliary compartment, taken on line 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 shows an end view of the package taken on line 33 of FIG. 2, with the auxiliary compartment partially extended, and the sliding drawer disposed within the package;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the sliding drawer, having a portion broken away to expose the arrangement of the filters; and
"ice
FIG. 5 is a side view of the drawer, taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings- FIG. 1 shows the primary container 10 and auxiliary compartment 11, which is shown in extended position with a pack of cigarettes 12 disposed in said compartment, and drawer 13 partially open to show filters 14 separated by compartmenting means 15.
The sectional view of FIG. 2 shows package 10 and auxiliary compartment 11 holding cigarettes package 12. and drawer 13 partially open; and mounting means 16 for retention of the auxiliary compartment upon the primary container.
FIG. 3 shows auxiliary compartment 11 partially extended, and drawer 13 disposed within the primary container 10.
FIG. 4 shows the arrangement, in drawer 13, of a double row of filters 14 and compartmenting means 15 which maintain the filters in proper orientation.
In FIG. 5, crenelated compartmenting means 15 is shown providing orderly disposition of filters 14 within drawer 13.
For convenience in marketing the foods packed in the product of this invention, an outside wrapper (not shown) is provided by which the auxiliary compartment 11 is constricted and flattened against the side of the primary container 10. When said outside wrapper is removed, the auxiliary compartment 11 may be easily extended to permit insertion therein of a package of related goods to be used in combination with the contents of the primary container.
In the present contemplation of this invention, the primary container has disposed therein, filters for optional attachment to cigarettes, and the auxiliary compartment provides space suited to receive and frictionally retain a pack of cigarettes of any brand preferred by the user.
Attachment to a cigarette of one of the filters disposed in the primary container is readily accomplished by opening drawer 13 a sufiicient distance to expose a single filter, which is then removed and aflixed upon the end of a cigarette which may be removed from the package housed in the auxiliary compartment, thus requiring the handling of only one unitized article comprising the pack of cigarettes and the box of filters. A second filter may be extracted from the same crenel, since the filters are disposed in double rows; and subsequent extractions require a further opening of the drawer 13. Re-closing of the drawer after each use is accomplished by force of habit and thus prevents accidental loss of any of the contents of the drawer.
An alternative method of effecting containment of the contents of the primary container is by the use of a flap formed integrally with the container and having one portion insertable within said container. Since such closure means are a customary feature on numerous types of containers, the flap method of closure has not been shown in the accompanying drawings. Crenelated orientation means are preferred, regardless of the type of closure used.
The invention having been thus disclosed, what is claimed is:
1.
