1 Claims, 9 Drawing Figures seamen BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates to marking and cutting scribers for use in marking or cutting lines parallel to an edge or for marking or cutting circles of any desired circumference permitted by the length of the bar.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed to a scriber of the type which includes an elongate bar having add on sections which can be detachably secured to one end thereof. The bar is provided with a sliding butt guide carrying a swivel point thereon with the guide being releasably secured in adjusted position to the bar. A combination knife blade and scriber point is detachably secured to one end of the bar for marking or cutting aline in accordance with the movement of the scriber. A scribing wheel may be detachably secured to the bar in place of the combination cutter blade and marker blade when desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a combination scriber and cutter device which can scribe and cut lines parallel to an edge as well as scribe and cut circular lines with radii equal to the length of the bar and its add on portions.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention with the add on bar shown detached;

FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 3 3 of FIG. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the invention showing the add on bar attached;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentaryhorizontal sectional view taken along the line 55 of FIG. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention;
FIG. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view taken along the line 77 of FIG. 6, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken along the line 8-8 of FIG. 7, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIG. 9 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken along the line 9-9 of FIG. 8, looking in the direction of the arrows.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a scriber constructed in accordance with the invention.
The scriber 10 includes an elongate bar 11 having a generally rectangular cross section and having indicia along one surface calibrated in sixteenth of an inch to form a rule 12. The bar 11 has an integral pin 13 extending longitudinally from one end thereof as can be seen in FIGS. 1 and 5. The opposite end of the bar 13 has a threaded bore 14 extending therein in axial alignment with the pin 13.
A threaded set screw 15 is threaded into the threaded bore 14 and has a shoulder outer portion 16 carrying a head 17 thereon. The shoulder portions 16 of the set screw 15 extends through a channel clamp 18 which engages about the end of the bar 11 and through the center of a combination cutting blade and scriber 19 positioned between the channel clamp member 18 and the bar 11. A combined cutter and scriber 19 includes a sloping cutting edge 20 along the upper edge thereof and a scribing point 21 formed on the lower edge thereof. The channel clamp member 18 is positioned so that with the scriber point 21 down it is completely exposed for engagement with the surface. With the blade 19 inverted the scriber point 19 is protected by the channel clamp member 18 and the cutting edge 20 is completely exposed for contact with the work.
A generally rectangular butt guide 22 has a rectangular opening 23 through which the bar 1 1 projects. The guide 22 is freely slidable on the bar 11 and can be locked in an adjustable position by a set screw 24 extending through the guide 22 into engagement with the bar 11.
An add on bar 25 having a generally rectangular cross section identical to the cross section of the bar 11 is also provided with a rule 26 on one surface thereof calibrated in sixteenths of an inch. The add on bar 25 has a bore 27 opening into one end thereof to receive the pin 13 when attaching the bar 25 to the bar 11. A set screw 28 extends through the side of the bar 25 into the bore 27 to lock the pin 13 in the bore 27 to secure the bar 25 to the bar 11. The guide 22 may be slid onto the bar 25 as can be seen in FIG. 4 in order to increase the size of the circle swung by the combination blade 19.
In FIGS. 6 through 9 a modified form of the invention is illustrated wherein the bar 11 is provided with a scriber wheel assembly generally indicated at 30 as a replacement for the combination blade 19. The scriber wheel assembly 30 includes a retaining guide 31 having pointers 32, 33 at opposite ends thereof. The retainer. guide 31 is fixed to the bar 11 and is held against rotation with respect thereto. A hardened steel scriber wheel 34 is rotatably mounted on the set screw 15 The wheel 34 is exactly 8 inches in circumference and has a circular rule marked thereon to indicate with the pointers 32, 33 the length of an arc in inches.
A butt guide 35 is slidably mounted on the bar 11 and is secured in adjusted position there along by a set screw 36. The butt guide 35 has a rectangular opening 37 formed therein throughwhich the bar 11 projects. A swivel point 38 is formed on the bottom of the butt guide 35 for centering the bar 11. A roller 39 is secured to the butt guide 35 by a bolt 40. The roller 39 is adapted to engage the surface of work on the edge of which is engaged by the butt guide 35 to make the butt guide 35 roll easily there along when marking lines parallel to the edge.
In the use and operation of the invention the scriber is adapted to measure and scribe parallel lines on sheet metal, wood, sheet rock, by loosening the set screw and sliding the butt guide to a desired measurement. The set screw is tightened locking the butt guide to the bar so that either parallel line or circular line scribing may then be done.
In the modified form of the invention the wheel replaces the combined blade 19 and will mark an are or a line parallel to an edge as required. Further the wheel 34 will also measure the length of the line as it rolls along the line either in an are or along a straight edge.
The edge of the wheel 34 is notched slightly each 1/16th of an inch to produce improved rolling action and better scribmg.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
