H. R. GEYER; IMPLEMENT FOR EXTRACTING AXLE BOXES FROM WHEEL HUBS. No. 366,163. Patented July 5, 1887.
FFCEQ HERMANN R. GEYER, OFSAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
IMPLEMENT FOR EXTRACTING AXLE-BOXES FROM WHEEL-HUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,163, dated July 5, 1887.
' Application filed November 24, 1886. Serial No. 219,834. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN R. GEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Implements for Extracting Axle-Boxes from \Vheel-I-Iubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to implements forex- Lracting axleboxcs from wheel-hubs; and it consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described and specilicall y claimed, whereby an improved implement is produced for speedily and eco nomically removing axle-boxes from wheelhubs.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central section of a wheel hub and a side elevation of my axle-box extractor as it appears when set for operation; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the extractor, its expanding-wedge being shown out of position.
The letter A in the drawings represents a wheel-hub, B an axlebox, and O the wheelhub axlcbox extractor.
The wheel-hub A and axle-box B to which my extractor is applicable are of ordinary construction, as shown, or may be of any other suitable construction.
The extractor C consists of a withdrawing device, D, an adjustable abutting-frame, E, and a hand operating-nut, F, as shown, or the equivalents thereof.
The withdrawing device D of the extractor 0 consists of a screw portion, (1, having triangular or square thread, a bifurcated elastic end portion, d, each of the prongs of which is provided with an outer ledge or shoulder, d. In connection with this device D a wedge, (1 or equivalentexpander, is employed, said wedge being driven in between the prongs of the portion (1 after the shoulders or ledges of thedevice D have been passed through the, axle-box, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The adjustable abutting-frame E comprises a transverse bar, c, having a hollow central boss, 6, through which the screw-threaded portion d of the device D slides freely, and two sliding adjustable'legs, 0', having bosses e fitted loosol y to the bar e, and to which they may be fastened by means of thumb-screws e" at a suitable distance from the screw d, as illus' tratcd. Above the boss 6, and bearing upon its top surface, is the hand operating-nut F, which consists of a round nut, f, fitted to the screw portion (1, and two lever or handle arms, f, formed thereon on opposite sides.
In order to-use this implement for extracting an axle-box B from a wheel-hub A, the lower portion of the device D is inserted into the axle-box B so that the shoulders or ledges d are passed beyond the outer or smaller end, I), of the axle-box. The legs 6" are also adjusted on the bar 0 so as to stand outside of the larger end portion, 1), 0f the axlebox and rest upon the end surface, a, of the hub, and then the bifurcated end portion, cl, of the device D is expanded by driving the wedge d" in between its prongs until the shoulders or ledges d are caused to occupy a position lateral to the inner periphery of the smaller end, I), of the axle-box, as shown in Fig. 1. The operatingnut F is now turned by hand, thereby drawing up the device D and the axle-box B along with it, the shoulders or ledges d" of the device D drawing directlyagainst said box.
What 1 claim is- 1. An axle-box extractor, consisting of an axle box extracting device, D, comprising screw-threaded rigid portion 11, elastic bifurcated expa'nsible portion (6, having ledges d abutting-frame E, and operating-nut F, sub stantially as described.
2. The abuttingframc E, consisting of bar 0, having central hollow boss, 6', and adjustable sliding legs 0', in combination with the expansible axle-box extracting device D and operatingnut F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the bifurcated expansible screw-threaded axlebox extracting device D, abutting-fran1e E, and operatingnut F, of an expanding device, as cl, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMANN R. GEYER.
