Abstract

A ''''button-down'''' collar attached shirt wherein the collar has extra long pointed wings and wherein the pointed tips of the wings are provided with tapes which are alignable and mated with holddown tapes on the front of the shirt. The female tapes have loops arranged to accommodate flexible and resilient hooks on the coacting male tapes. These paired and oriented self-adhering tapes, when firmly pressed together, fasten tightly, hold the wings neatly in place and prevent unsightly wrinkling. These interconnected tapes can be easily and equickly peeled apart and separated, are capably adjustable and adaptable, and have been found to be ideal for the purposes desired.

Jacobson [57] ABSTRACT A button-down" collar attached shirt wherein the collar has extra long pointed wings and wherein the pointed tips of the wings are provided with tapes which are alignable and mated with holddown tapes on the front of the shirt. The female tapes have loops arranged to accommodate flexible and resilient hooks on the coacting male tapes. These paired and oriented self-adhering tapes, when firmly pressed together, fasten tightly, hold the wings neatly in place and prevent unsightly wrinkling. These interconnected tapes can be easily and equickly peeled apart and separated, are capably adjustable and adaptable, and have been found to be ideal for the purposes desired.

2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures Patented March 28, 1972 Ham l0 Elia/r INVENTOK CONCEALED COLLAR WING FASTENERS This invention relates to fasteners for the free pointed or tip ends of turned-down soft shirt collars which are commonly classified as button-down-collars, and has to do, more particularly, with improved concealed fastening meats which lends itself to ideally acceptable use on collars which have longer-than-usual sharp pointed wings.

As exemplary of the state of the artto which the invention relates and for background purposes, it is' to be pointedout that shirt collar retaining and fastening devices which are concealed when in use are old and wellknown as disclosed, forexample, in the collar stay means in a patent to Carl C. Wilm, US. Pat. No. 2,599,421. Other less significant prior patents could be but are not herein made of record. Keeping inmind this aspect of the over-all matter, it is common knowledgethat fasteners of one type or another have been devisedandinterposed between the peaked or pointed ends of the wings wherein the means is concealed and lends itself to use on mens collar attached shirts.

For further and significant background information, it can and should be pointed out that the quick connectible .and separable hold-down means herein disclosed :pertains, generally stated, to the use of paired self-adhering nylon tapes which are pressed together for-closingand are yanked and peeled apart to open. Such versatile nylon tape fasteners are similar to the George de Mestral fastener currently referred to in the trade as a Velcro fastener-and covered in US. Pat. No. 2,717,437, of Sept. 13, 1955. Including this information here will enable the reader to recognize the terminology hereinafter used and having to do with male and female nylon pressure-responsive tapes. While. self-adhering nylon tapes are employed in many .different lines of endeavor and are in widespread use, it will be evident-that the herein disclosed concept is such in construction and capability that the shirt which is provided with such fasteners is anadvance in the art of button-down collars.

Briefly the present invention pertains to a shirt wherein the collar embodies cooperable wings whichare extra long and wherein self-adhering nylon tapes'are properly paired and mounted onthe pointed or peaked ends of thewings in .a manner to orient and coordinate with paired properly located self-adhering tapes which are stitched or otherwise mounted .atop predetermined front portions of the shirt withwhich the free pointed ends of the wings cooperate.

More specifically the preferred means is characterized. by a first pair of tapes superimposed upon and fastened to: .the intended underneath surfaces or sides of the pointed wings and a second pair of companion or complemental tapes which are superimposed upon and fastenedto .theunderlying front surface portions of the shirt in predetermined positions for oriented reception andtemporary retention of the respectively cooperable first tapes. The coacting surfaces of the first and second pairs of tapes have manually actuatable self-adhering means whereby the tapes can be manually pressed together and retentively interconnected-and subsequently yanked and peeled apart and separated at will.

To the ends desired, each tape is substantiallyrectangular'in plan, the tapes of the rfirst pair being of alengthand width greater than the length and width of the tapes of the second pair so that the resulting difference in proportions and size facilitates adjusting and connecting the tapes in a manner which permits thewings to be adaptably shifted to provide a wide spread, a narrow spread, oran in-betweenmoderate spread of the wings and which, in addition,'permitsoneto achieve, if desired, a rolleffect, while preventing buckling, wrinkling and the unsightly appearance when adequate fastening and hold-down means is lacking.

- Experience has shown that the properly cut, positioned and interrelated paired tapes provide for easy maintenance, adjustability, quick drying and other'necessary laundering steps. Then, too, the tapes are trouble-free, non-jamming and snagproof, ensure acceptable neatness and grooming in appearance, are easily attachedby sewing, adhesive or-heatseallike parts throughout, and in which:

FIG. 1 is a fragmentary view showing a soft shirt, an attached collar having long-pointed wings and, what is more significant, the pointed or peak ends of the wings provided with .the improved concealed-fasteners.

FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 showing the underneath surfaces of thepointed wings and disclosing precisely how the femaleself-adhering nylon tapes are constructed and mounted and also uncovering and showing the downwardly converging male tapes.

FIG. 3 is anenlarged detail section taken approximately on theplane of the section line 3-3 of FIG. 1.

Thesoft shirt is denoted by the numeral 6, the customary neckband by the numeral-8 and the complemental tumeddown collar by the numeral 10. The gradually widened wings are denoted at 12 and the sharp pointed peaks or points are denoted'at l4. It.will be evidentthat this collar attached shirt is of a well-known type but that the pointed wigs are extra long and range in length from 3% inches to 5 inches (more or less) in keeping with present-day styles and trends.

The quick connectible and seperable hold-down means is designed and adapted, asshown, to position and retain the peaks or points 14 in the well groomed manner illustrated in FIG. 1. This means comprises a first pair of nylon tapes 16 which are identical'in construction and are correspondingly mounted on theunderneath surfaces or sides of the wings 12. Each tape if of elongated rectangular form and is superimposed upon the cooperating surface and stitched, glued or otherwise mounted in place. In the views shown, each tape is appliedand stitched as denoted at 18. Each tape is designated as a female tape and has matted surface 20 made up on a myriad of loops. The tape is so mounted that the outer marginal edge 22 (FIG. 2) is flush with the coordinating marginal edge of the wing 12: One transverse end is denoted at 24 and the other oblique-angled-end or edge is denoted at 26 and has its, peak portion 328 so arranged that it coincides with the pointed end or peak 14 of the cooperable wing; Each tape is of front. .They are located in predetermined relationship and slope toward each other, that is, converge inwardly and downwardlyfl'hese tapesare preferably stitched around their marginal edges as at 34.'The surfaces of the tape which mate with the matted surfaces of the female tapes 16 are provided with a myraid .of distributively arranged flexible resilient hooks 36. It should be noted that the tapes 30 are shorter and narrower than the tapes 16 to compensate for shiftable adjustment of the pointed wings of the collar. Some wearers will prefer to place the tapes directly atop each other in interconnecting relationship with the pointedwings residing as flat as possible atop the shirt front. Other persons may prefer to slightly disalignor shiftably adjust the tapes 16 relative to the tapes'30 (not detailed) to achieve a bowed effect or to adjust the collar wings closertogether or farther. apart depending on the degree of spread desired.

Reference to the views of the drawing, singly and collectively, and particularly to FIG. 3 will show that the'female tapes 16 have the desired keeper loops to receive and separably interconnect the bill portions of the companion hooks 36 therewith.

It will be evident that the invention disclosed has to do with means which adequately functions to hold the points of the soft collar in place. Many shirts worn by men today have extremely long pointed wings and wherein the wings may range 3 to 6 inches, more or less, in length. There is a tendency for the points of the soft collar to curl and bend upwardly resulting in an unsightly appearance. Various types of fasteners have been devised and used with a view toward overcoming this objectionable result but, it is believed, do not match the end product and improved result attained with the herein disclosed invention. The hook and loop fastening tapes achieve acceptable simplicity and adjustability and are snag-proof and jam-proof, light in weight, washable and dry-cleanable. In addition, these tapes are easily cut to size, have varied strength properties, can be adhered, heat sealed and stitched or stapled or otherwise attached for practical coordinating use.

It will be evident that the fastening means herein shown and described lends itself to practical use on other collar-equipped garments such as blouses, jackets and the like. It follows that the invention well serves the purposes for which it has been devised.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

1 claim:

1. In combination, a shirt having a neckband provided with a complemental integrally attached collar of a button-down type, said collar having like free ends embodying duplicate cooperable wings provided with attachable and detachable pointed peaks, and quick connectible and separable holddown means designed and adapted to position and retain said peaks in given positions atop predetermined underlying surface portions of front portions of said shirt, said means comprising a first pair of elongated female-type self-adhering nylon tapes which are superimposed upon and stitched to underneath sides of the respective wings, said tapes being alike and each tape having a matted surface embodying a myriad of keeper loops, said tapes being elongated, stitched to the surfaces upon which they are superimposed and having oblique angled forward terminal ends which are flush with coacting end portions of the terminal ends of said peaks and outward longitudinal edges which are flush with the corresponding outward edge portions of the respectively oriented wings, and a second pair of similarly elongated nylon male-type tapes superimposed upon and fastened atop front portions of said shirt in predetermined positions for oriented reception and temporary retention of the respectively mating first tapes, the surfaces of the tapes of said second pair of tapes opposed to said matted surfaces having resilient hooks which are related and releasably connectible with coacting loops, said tapes being launderable and dry cleanable.

2. The combination defined in and according to claim 1, and wherein each tape is substantially rectangular in plan, the tapes of the first pair being of a length and width greater than the length and width of the tapes of the second pair, whereby the resulting difierence in size facilitates adjusting and connecting the tapes in a manner which permits the wings to be relatively shifted to provide a (1) wide spread, (2) a narrow spread, or (3) an in-between moderate spread of said wings, and which also permits one to achieve a roll effect, if desired, and in addition to prevent uneven and undesirable creasing and rumpling of relatively long pointed wings.

Claims

2. The combination defined in and according to claim 1, and wherein each tape is substantially rectangular in plan, the tapes of the first pair being of a length and width greater than the length and width of the tapes of the second pair, whereby the resulting difference in size facilitates adjusting and connecting the tapes in a manner which permits the wings to be relatively shifted to provide a (1) wide spread, (2) a narrow spread, or (3) an in-between moderate spread of said wings, and which also permits one to achieve a roll effect, if desired, and in addition to prevent uneven and undesirable creasing and rumpling of relatively long pointed wings.
