Description

(No Model.)
R. BUCHANAN.
DRUM TIGHTBNER. N0. 355,057. Patented Dec. 2 8, 1886.
WITNBSSES f INVENTOR JM BY ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEs ROBERT BUCHANAN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOV A.
DRUM-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,057, dated December 28, 1886.
Serial No. 201,064. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BUCHANAN, of Sioux City, in the county of Voodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Drum-Tightener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a means whereby the rope employed to tighten the dr unl-heads and bind the hoops to the main body of the drum may be passed, when irst applied, in parallel lines from hoop to hoop, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specilically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, which is a view of a drum provided with my improved form oftightener, sections of the two hoops being broken away to disclose the construction of the parts.
In the drawing, l0 represents the body orAv barrel ol" an ordinary forni of drum, 1l the upper hoop, and l2 the lower hoop, ofthe same, 13 13 representing the extending portion of the drnmheads, which are, as usual, wrapped upon hoops.
To one of' the drum-heads I attach a number of hooks, 2 2, that are caught upon the upper edge of the hoop, as shown, and the outer lengths of these hooks are provided with asingle aperture, through which the cord or rope 20 is passed, and to the other hoop of thedrum I attach hooks 3, in which the outer length of the hook is divided into legs 4 and 5, each of which legs is apertured to receive the rope or cord 20, which said cord is passed through, say, the loop 5, carried through the loop to the opposite hook, 2, back again and through the loop 4, then through the loop 5 of the adjacent hook 3, and so on around the drum.
`After the rope 20 has been applied as decent hooks will be encircled by the straps, and
if these straps are pulled to the position shown at in the drawing the proper tension may be imparted to the rope and to the drumheads.
Although I have described a partcularform of attachment for causing the rope to pass in parallel lines across the body of the drum, I do not confine myself to this form of attachment, as any other means by which a similar result could be obtained would answer my purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a dru1n-body, its heads and hoops, of a cord passed in substantially parallel lines from hoop to hoop, and tigh teningstraps 30, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a drum-body, its heads and hoops, of single-apertured hooks 2, double-apertured hooks 3, a cord or rope, 20, and straps 30, substantially as described.
B OBERT BUCHANAN.
