GRAB HOOK.
No. 341,401. Patented May 4, 1886.
INVENTOR:
BY I ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES 'azwu ig UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER BYRNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GRAB-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,401, dated May 4,1886.
Application filed November 11, 1885. Serial No. 182,459. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLvEs'rER BYRNE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Life-Saving Grab-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved implement for grabbing persons in the water to rescue them, which implement grabs automatically and holds the persons securely.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front view of my improved grab-hook, the same being open, parts being in section and others broken out. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the hook closed, parts being broken out and others being in section.
The rod Ais held loosely in the tube B, and projects from one end of the same, and on the outer end of the rod A the head 0 is formed, in which the two curved levers D are pivoted to swing toward and from each other, and the said levers are provided at their upper ends with the toothed jaw-plates E, and at their lower ends with the arms E, projecting in opposite directions. A pin, G, projects from the rod A through the longitudinal slot H in the tube B, as shown.
From the upper end of the tube B the longitudinally-slotted arms J project in opposite directions, and through the said arms J the lower ends of the levers D pass.
To each side edge of the rod A a spring strip, K, is secured, the free ends of which rest against the inner edges of the levers D, and press the said levers from each other.
On the inner surface of each arm J a springstrip, L, is secured, the free ends of which are adjacent to the outer ends of said arms.
The above-described device is preferably made of iron and galvanized, and is secured on the end of a pole.
The operation is as follows: The lower ends of the levers D are pressedtogether, the springs K pressed toward each other, and the levers D are locked in place by the arms J, against the outer ends of the slots of which the ends of the arms E are pressed. To grasp a person the grab-hook is brought in contact with the person, whereby the rod A is moved in the direction of the arrow at, and the ends of the arms E are disengaged from the ends of the arms J. The springs K throw the lower ends of the levers D from each other and the upper ends together, whereby the person is grabbed and held securely. The lower ends of the levers D catch on the outer free ends of the springs L, as shown in Fig. 2, and are thus locked in place.
The device can also be used by firemen for grasping persons, and for other purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a grab-hook, the combination, with a rod, of grabbing levers pivoted on the same, a piece on which the rod can slide, springs acting on the levers, and of arms on the said piece for locking the lower ends of the grabbing-levers in place, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a grab-hook, the combination, with a sliding rod, of a tube in which it slides, grabbing-levers pivoted on the rod, springs acting on the said levers, and of slotted arms onthe tube for locking the lower ends of the said levers when closed, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the rod A, of the levers D, pivoted to the same, and having the arms E on their lower ends, the tube B, in which the rod A slides, the slotted arms J on the tube B, and the springs K, acting on the said levers, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the rod A, of the levers D, pivoted on the same, and having the 9 arms E on their lower ends, the tube B, in which the rod A slides, the slotted arms J on the tube B, the locking-springs L, secured to the same, and of springs for pressing the levers D from each other at their lower ends and together at their upper ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
