DAVID B. FALK, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
TROUSERS-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,835, dated September 7,1886.
Serial No. 198,905. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAvID B; FALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of. South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pantaloon-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pantaloon-stretchers, and has for its object the provision of means for holding such garments extended their full length within an adjustable separable frame, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure, Figure 1 represents my invention applied to stretch out a pair of pantaloons. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail perspective views of a pair of the clamps separated. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the stretching-lever. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the joined clamps on the line at m of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A A represents two plates, constituting the clamps proper, one pair of which, in practice, is applied, respectively, near the upper and lower end ofa pair of pantaloons, as plainly shownin Fig. 1. Said plates have their inner faces, a, oppositelyinclined, whereby when being slid into position they will intermediately wedge the garment, as plainly shown in the drawings. Upon the ends of each plate A, and rigidly attached thereto, is a holding-clamp, a, forming a way within which the ends of the plates A are free to slide. At the middle of the front edge of each plate A, and extending therein, is a cutaway part, a", for reception of coincidentallyformed ends of a toggle-lever, as will be more particularly described hereinafter.
B is a two-part folding-lever, one part, b, thereof having an extending tongue, I), which freely passes within a space cut away for its reception in the opposite part, V. The two parts of said lever B are pivotally connected at b", and said lever is provided with a button or suitable fastening device, b, adapted and intended to hold the tongue I) flat when the lever is applied to perform its function, as illustrated in Fig, 1. The free end of each part of the leverB is shaped to fit into the coincident cut-away part a of the clamp-plates A. In the drawings I show the ends of the lever as beveled off, and the opening a is show as shaped in like relative manner; but it will be entirely within the scope of my invention to round the ends of saidlever to fit within a coincidentallyconfigurated opening, Any form of construction to' enable these parts to intermesh will be equivalent thereto. Above said cutaway parts a and forming the upper faces thereof, is a holding-plate, a, against which takes the upper face of the respective ends of the lever B.
A ring or hanging device, as C, may be placed upon one or either of the clamp-plates.
From the above description, in connection with the drawings, the nature, object, and application of my invention will be readily understood by those familiar with analogous devices. lts practical operation may be thus briefly described: A pair of clamp-plates, A A, are affixed near the upper and lower ends of a pair of pantaloons, holding the garment between the inclined faces thereof. The said clamp-plates are then partially tightened by hand. The ends of thelever B are then placed within the cut-away parts a", and pressure is applied to the center of said lever until it lies fiat, as shown in Fig. 1. This pressure will not only have the effect to straighten out said lever, but will also cause the upper and lower plates, A A, to be farther slid within the end clamps, a, and thus more firmly grasp the portion of the garment embraced between the inclined faces of said clamp-plates.
The effect of straightening out the lever B, as described, will be that all wrinkles or folds, especially at the knee portion, will be taken out, while the further sliding of the clampplates A A upon themselves will relieve the garment from undue tension and firmly clasp the portions that they grasp. Thus the garment will be restored to and maintained in its original shape and smoothness, and be in effect practically in the condition known as pressed out.
Having now fully explained my invention and the manner of practicing the same, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is-
1. A device for stretching pantaloons, consisting of end clamp-plates, A A, having each of their inner faces oppositely inclined, in combination with holding-clamps a, attached to the ends of the plate A, and means for retaining said clamps extended, as and for the purpose intended, substantially as described.
2. A device for stretching pantaloons, consisting of pairs of clamp-plates, each pair adapted to clamp the garment horizontally, said plates having their inner surfaces inclined respectively in opposite directions, the
upper ofeach pair of said plates being provided with an opening, a covered upon one side with plate a, in combination with a two-part pivotally-connec ted toggle-lever, B, having an extending tongue, I), on theinner end, said lever provided with locking device, as 1), substantially as described.
3. A device for stretching pantaloons, consisting of two pairs of aligning end plates adapted to clamp the garment horizontally, each pair having their inner surfaces inclined in opposite directions, the upper plates having a cut-away part forming an opening, a
said opening having plate a in combination with a two-part pivotally-conneeted togglelever, B, having an extending tongue, I), on one part thereof, and an opening upon the opposite member for the reception of said tongue, and provided with fastener, as b, and hanger O, as and for the purpose intended and set forth, substantially as described.
