Int. Cl. D01g /74 U.S. Cl. 19-98 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composite card plate is provided which includes a curved metal backing plate and a frangible inner liner facing a card cylinder. The inner liner is constructed of phenolic impregnated paper and the like, and is bonded to the metal backing plate.
This application is a continuation of application Ser. No. 684,290, filed Nov. 20, 1967, now abandoned.
This invention relates to an improved card plate which is capable of breaking on contact by card cylinder wire or teeth and the like without damaging the same.
Contact of card cylinder by metallic card plates with consequent damage to both has long been a major and expensive problem, especially the bottom front knife plate, with textile cards. Contact most often results from excessive lint build-up on the dotfer causing pushing of the plate against a cylinder. Metallic plates as normally used, constructed of steel, may encourage displacement of the fibers in the stock being carded by static electricity. Not only does this adversely affect the quality of the web, but also increases the formation of lint and lint build-up on the card.
Efforts to solve these problems have not been met with substantial success. For example, plates have been constructed of aluminum but contact with card cylinders caused bits of the aluminum to imbed in the teeth of the cylinder necessitating stripping of the cylinder. Other materials used would shred damaging the teeth of the card clothing and the web. Still other materials are not sufiiciently rigid to control the air currents generated by rotation of the cylinder.
Accordingly, it is an important object of this invention to provide an effective card plate so constructed as to pulverize on contact with a card cylinder without damage to the cylinder clothing.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a card plate having an inner surface with a low coefficient of friction so as to reduce the build-up of fugitive tints on the inside of the plate.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a card plate which minimizes the possibility of shearing off of the plate when the plate is in contact with the revolving cylinder.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a card plate which may be easily repaired when damaged by contact with a card cylinder.
Still another important object of the invention is the provision of a card plate which will insure superior air control thus producing a superior web.
The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.

The drawing illustrates a card plate for use as a back knife plate and a front knife plate and the like, for controlling air currents generated by a card cylinder and the like. A metal backing plate A conforms generally to the curvature of the card cylinder. A frangible non-metallic inner lining B is aflixed to and covers the metal backing plate next adjacent the card cylinder and is spaced therefrom conforming generally to the curvature of the card cylinder. The inner lining being constructed of rigid insulating material having a low coefficient of friction on the inner surface thereof adjacent the cylinder. The inner lining is capable of pulverizing without shredding and without imbedding in the teeth of the card cylinder, and without damaging same when contacted thereby. The ininner lining is constructed of phenolic impregnated paper, and the backing plate is constructed of steel. The inner lining and said backing plate are of about the same thickess. A means C is provided for integrally aflixing the inner lining B over its entire outer surface to the backing plate A covering the entire inner surface of the backing plate.
A conventional carding machine is schematically illustrated and the frame thereof is designated at 10. The frame carries the usual lickerin roll 11, main cylinder 12, and dotfer cylinder 13. A back knife plate is schematically illustrated in FIGURE 1 at 14, while front knife plates are illustrated at 15 and 17. A door plate is illustrated at 16. These plates are positioned by use of any of the customary devices (not illustrated).
The bottom front knife plate 17 is typical, and is illustrated in an enlarged sectional side elevation in FIGURE 2. It will be observed that a chamfer edge is illustrated at 17a, while a beveled edge is illustrated at 17b. By referring to FIGURE 1, it will be noted that the door plate 16 has two chamfer edges, while the top front knife plate 15 has a chamfer edge adjacent the door plate 16, and a beveled edge at the upper portion thereof. The back knife plate 14 has two beveled edges.
In the fabrication of the plates the steel is curved to generally conform to the curvature of the main cylinder. An epoxy bonding agent is spread on the inner surface of the steel and the phenolic impregnated paper is applied to the inner surface thereof by a pressure roll. The composite structure thus formed is allowed to stand for about twelve hours. The phenolic impregnated paper plate is about the same thickness as the steel, and is also preformed. The edges are beveled or chamfered as desired by a milling process and holes or slots are drilled or punched for attaching conventional fastening means, such as brackets (not shown), which are riveted or bolted.
A suitable henolic impregnated paper includes A3" Nat XP-240 Phenolite, sold by NVF Company of Wilmington, Del. A suitable bonding agent C is a mixture of 1 part by weight of a product Y1l062B with 3 parts by weight of Y-11-062A. Both such products are sold by Swift & Company, Adhesive Products Department, Box 274, Station D, Atlanta, Ga.
It has been found that when minor damage occurs to the phenolic impregnated paper portion of the plate a light hand sanding is all that is needed to make the plate serviceable. When excessive damage occurs the paper portion of the plate may be replaced if the metal portion is not damaged. It is important that the frangible inner liner B have insulating properties for avoiding attraction of the fibers being carded by static electricity. It is also important that the inner lining D be capable of pulverizing without damaging the card clothing and without shredding. It is also important that such material not imbed in the card clothing so as to avoid the necessity for stripping the card clothing.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A card plate for use as a back knife plate, a front knife plate, top front knife plate, bottom knife plate, door plate and the like for controlling air currents generated by a card cylinder and the like including,
(A) a metal backing plate conforming generally to the curvature of the card cylinder,
(B) a frangible non-metallic inner lining afiixed to and covering said metal backing plate next adjacent the card cylinder and being spaced therefrom conforming to the curvature of the card cylinder,
(C) said inner lining being constructed of rigid insulating material having a low coeflicient of friction on the inner surface thereof adjacent the cylinder, and
(D) said inner lining being capable of pulverizing without shredding and without imbedding in the teeth of the card cylinder and without damaging same when contacted thereby.
2. The card plate set forth in claim 1, wherein (A) said inner lining is constructed of phenolic impregnated paper,
(B) said backing plate is constructed of steel, and
(C) said inner lining and said backing plate are of about the same thickness, and including (D) means integrally affixing said inner lining over its entire outer surface to said backing plate covering the entire inner surface of the backing plate.
3. For use in a card plate useful as a back knife plate,
a front knife plate, bottom knife plate, door plate and the like for controlling air currents generated by a card cylinder and the like, said card plate having a metal backing plate conforming generally to the curvature of the card cylinder, the improvement including,
(A) a frangible non-metallic inner lining covering said metal backing plate next adjacent the card cylinder and being spaced therefrom conforming to the curvature of the card cylinder,
(B) said inner lining being constructed of rigid insulating material having a low coefficient of friction on the inner surface thereof adjacent the cylinder,
(C) said inner lining being capable of pulverizing without shredding and without imbedding in the teeth of the card cylinder and without damaging same when contacted thereby, and
(D) means aflixing said inner lining over its outer surface to said backing plate covering the inner surface of the backing plate,
whereby lint formation and lint build-up is reduced.
