Description
E. w. BEALE SEALING DEVICE FOR SHOWER THRESHOLD June 24, 1969 Filed Aug. 1, 1967 PRIOR ART PRIOR ART EDWIN MI. 35445 INVENTOR.
United States Patent U.S. Cl. 52-210 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A seal for the door jamb of a stall shower having an attached panel to cover the entire area of the joint of the threshold with the remainder of the framing.
Background of the invention This invention relates to water-tight closures, and more particularly to a seal for the joint between the threshold and posts of a stall shower door jamb.
In the past it has been the practice to slit a door jamb seal and wrap it around the door jamb joint. In such a case, the seal leaks at the slit.
Summary of the invention In accordance with the device of the present invention, the above described and other disadvantages of the prior art are overcome by cementing an extra panel to the seal around the split edges thereof to make a complete watertight seal. A corner of the extra panel is thus cemented into the joint.
Brief description of the drawings In the drawings which are to be regarded as merely illustrative FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the sealing sheet constructed in accordance with the prior art;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the sheet after it has been folded for use on the door jamb of a shower stall;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the sealing sheet installed;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the covering panel of the present invention after it has been affixed to the sealing sheet; and
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view of the sealing sheet and covering panel installed on the door jamb.
Description 0 the preferred embodiment In FIG. 1, the sealing sheet of the prior art is indicated at 10. The sheet material may be constructed of a material identical to that shown in U.S. Patent No. 2,962,405. Sheet is slit at 11 and 12 so that it may be formed as shown in FIG. 2.
Note will be taken from FIG. 2 that sheet 10' has a first panel 13 to cover the inside surface of a door jamb post. First and second flaps 14 and 15 are formed integrally with panel 13 to extend along the front and rear sides of the post. A second panel 16 is formed integrally with the first panel 13 in a position to extend over the top of the door jamb threshold. Third and fourth fiaps " ice 17 and 18 are formed integrally with the second panel 16 to extend downwardly along the front and rear sides of the threshold. Note will be taken that slit 12 has edges 19 and 20 spaced from each other as shown in FIG. 2. A panel is bond-ed to these edges at slit 12, not shown. Such a panel is indicated at 21 in FIGS. 4 and 5. As shown in FIG. 4, panel 21 has a border 22 bonded to the lower edge 20 of flap 15. Similarly, panel 21 has a border 22 bonded to the vertical edge 19 of flap 18. Further, the entire surface around the corner where edges 19 and 20 meet at 24 is bonded to panel 21 at 25 and 26. Corner portion 25 of panel 21 is bonded to the panel 13 around corner 24. Corner portion 26 of panel 21 is bonded to panel 16 around corner 24.
Although only one specific embodiment of the present invention has been described and illustrated herein, many changes and modifications will, of course, suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. This Single embodiment has been selected for this disclosure for the purpose of illustration only.
I claim:
1. In a water-tight seal for a door jamb having an upright post and a threshold, said seal including a first face panel to fit adjacent the post, and a second face panel to fit adjacent the threshold at the joint between said post and said threshold, said first panel bent around each side of said post from said joint to form a pair of inner and outer side flaps in sealing engagement with said post, said second panel bent downwardly over each side of said threshold from said joint to form a pair of inner and outer side flaps in sealing engagement with said threshold, the combination therewith of an additional panel sealed in water-tight relation to the outer surface of the lower border of the inner side flap of said first panel and sealed in water-tight relation to the adjacent outer upright border of the inner side flap of said second panel.
2. In a shower stall door jamb having an upright post and a threshold, the combination comprising: a seal having a first face panel to fit adjacent the post and a second face panel to fit adjacent the threshold at the joint thereof; said first panel bent around each side of said post from said joint, said second panel bent downwardly over each side of said threshold from said joint, and an additional panel sealed to the lower border of said first panel and to the adjacent border of said second panel, said additional panel having one corner extending over and sealed to the top of said second panel on said threshold and extending along and sealed to said first panel on said post at said joint.
