BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention This invention relates to a box. More particularly, this invention relates to a box useable as a storage container for reels of phonographic tape, film and the like.

Discussion of the prior art The prior art is replete with disclosures of various type boxes for different special purposes. In the field of storing rolls or reels of photographic film or phonographic records, certain requirements must be met. The first of these is a complete closure which prohibits and restrains inadvertent removal of the stored article. This is a more stringent requirement in this field because if, say, a reel of phonographic tape inadvertently escapes from the box container in which it is placed, a substantial amount of irreparable damage can result. Secondly, due to the fact that these reels contain a substantial amount of information recorded in the form of sight or sound etc., it is desirable to provide a substantial amount of space on the container to serve as an index to facilitate use of the reels. Naturally, this space must be such that it is integral with the box and is not merely an appendage which only serves to bulk up the overall container. Thirdly, the box or container must be readily storeable as in a library or the like.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Objects of the invention It is an object of this invention, therefore, to provide a box specially suited for use as a container for rolls of photographic film or phonographic tapes.

It is another object of this invention, therefore, to provide such a box which has a positive closure means to insure against inadvertent escape of the stored article.

It is another object of this invention, therefore, to provide a box as aforesaid provided with additional area for printing and the like to facilitate use of the box as an index and table of contents for the material on the stored rolls and tapes and which is not bulky.

It is yet another object of this invention to provide such a box which is readily storeable.

These and other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description and claims.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A preferred embodiment of the instant invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which the box is generally designated by reference numeral 2. It comprises a back side wall 4, a front side wall 6 interconnected by a bottom piece 8'. These sides are integral with one another and the box is formed by folding the blank 10 in the direction of the arrow 12 over scored fold lines 24 and 16. Adjacent front side piece 6 is overlapping top piece 20 on the edge of which is tab 22. Adjacent back side piece 4 and above the same as seen in FIGURE 1 is underlying top piece 26 having a trapezoidal configuration. On one side of back side piece 4 and integral therewith is end piece 30 which, in the embodiment shown, is integral with overlapping end closure piece 32. At the outer edge of end closure piece 32 is tab 34 which serves to function as a male fastening or closure member with a reciprocally acting female member on the opposite end of the box as more fully discussed below.

On the other side of back side piece 4 is back end piece 40 integral with tab member 44 joined by fold line 46. In the middle of fold line 46 is a trapezoidally shaped slot 48 which functions as a female closure member for tab 34. Back side piece 4 is integral with back end piece 40 and is joined thereto at fold line 50. End piece 30 is integral with back end piece 4 and end closure piece 32 being joined to these pieces at fold lines 54 and 56.

The box 2 is assembled by folding all of the pieces toward back side piece 4 over the respective fold lines. Underlying top piece 26 is positioned at an angle roughly about degrees from side piece 4 and an adhesive is placed either on its top or in the speckled area of overlapping top piece 20. Top piece 20 is adhesively secured to underlying top piece 26 to form the rectangular portion of the box. Tabs 22 and 60 are bent toward one another and tab member 44 having slits 62 and 64 at the fold line 46 is inwardly folded to complete that end closure. The slot 48 remains exposed.

End closure piece 32 is then bent over fold line 56 so as to overlie front side piece 6. Tab 34 is then inserted into slot 48 to complete the closure as seen in FIGURE 3.

Thus, it can readily be seen that the closure piece 32 serves two purposes. It serves to make a positive closing of the container by overlying a side piece of the rectangular portion of the container and by being fastened in locking engagement with an end piece positioned on the other side of the box. Thus, it is almost impossible for closure piece 32 and end piece 30 to be swung so far out of position as to allow inadvertent escape of a roll of tape from the container. Yet, it should be apparent that intentional removal of the contents of the box is not made a cumbersome or awkward task. Additionally, the added surfaces provided by closure piece 32 in combination with other exterior surfaces provide ample room for printing and indexing the tapes or rolls of film to be contained within the box. This can be done without the necessity of resorting to small print, since the box has substantially four times the graphic decorating space than any commercial package. Additionally, instead of having two principal surfaces on which to print information, the instant box has four surfaces available, all of substantially the same size. This provision is made without causing addition of undue bulk to the box itself. It should also be apparent from FIGURES 2, 3 and 5 that the boxes can readily be aligned next to one another in, for example, a phonographic tape library without consuming a substantial area. Accordingly, the instant box is a significant contribution to the box art especially that portion of that art dealing with boxes for phonographic tapes etc.

The terms and expressions used herein have been used as terms and expressions of illustration and not of limitation as there is no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding any equivalents or portions thereof, as many modifications and departures are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.

What is claimed is:

1. In a box including a rear side wall and opposing front side wall interconnected by an end wall, said rear and front side walls being provided with respective wall portions to form an opposing end wall to the interconnecting end wall, another pair of opposing end walls being provided to form the box, each of said pair of opposing end walls being integrally connected to said rear side wall, the improvement comprising an end closure member hingedly connected to one of said pair of end walls and thereby adapted to overlie said front side wall of said box, said closure member being further provided with a fastening member at its outer edge, which fastening member is detachably engageable with receiving means on the other of said pair of end walls, said other end wall being provided with a tab extension member hingedly connected thereto and foldable inside said box at its front side wall, said tab extension member and end wall further defining said receiving means.

2. A box according to claim 1, wherein said fastening member is a tab and said receiving means consist of a slot associatingly adapted to receive said tab in detachable engagement.
