- HASP LOCK.
If SE8,
N. PETERS. Pholwlilhogmphar. Washin ton, EC.
UNITED STATES PATENT much.
FRANK MIX, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
HASP' 'LCCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,002, dated June 22, 1886,
Application filed March 24,1886. Serial No.196,36-l. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. MIX, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
My invention relates to an improvement in hasp-locks.
Heretofore it has been the practice to secure the lock-casing to the under face of the hasp by rivets passing through the case and hasp. This method of securing the parts together is objectionable, in that the strain exerted on the hasp or lock-casing was borne directly by the small rivets employed in securing the parts together, and by cutting off the heads of the rivets the hasp could be separated from the lock.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for securing the lock-casing to the hasp, whereby all the strain, instead of being borne by the rivets which secure the lock-casing to the lock, is borne by the lockcasing and hasp.
lVith this end in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a hasp-plate and hasp, showing the lock in position on the lat ter. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the hasp-plate and hasp with the lock-casing removed, and Fig. 4 is a view in section ofthe lock-casing.
A represents a hasp-plate adapted to be secured to the trunk body or cover, and B the hasp or. strap hinged thereto at one end. Theseparts can be made of cast or wrought metal, as found most desirable, and the hasp or strap is provided at its free end with an opening or hole of a sufficient size to permit of the entrance of the body of the lock-casing. This hole can be circular, oblong, square, or any desired shape, and is adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped lock-casing, D, which latter 'is preferably struck up from sheet metal. This lock-casing D consists of a front plate, a, having a depression on its rear face, a corresponding projection on its front face, and a flange, b, which latter is adapted to rest on the front face of the hasp, and the cupshaped back plate, E, the edges of which rest within the depression 011 the rear face of the front plate, the said front and back plates being secured together by rivets or any approved means.
The front plate, instead of being circular, as shown in the drawings, can be rectangular or oval, and the depression therein and the shape of the back plate can correspond therewith or not, as found most desirable.
The lock-casing is entirely independent of the hasp, is complete in itself, and is applied to the hasp by passing the back plat-e through the opening in the hasp and securing the flange thereof to the front face of the hasp by rivets. Thus it will be seen that all pressure applied to the hasp is borne by the hasp and lock-casing,and not by the rivets which secure the casing to the hasp.
It is evident that numerous minor changes in the details of construction might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I would have it understood thatI do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a hasp having an opening therein, of a lockcasing consisting, essentially, of a front plate and a cup-shaped back plate, the latter being smaller in diameter than the front plate and secured thereto, the said casing being secured in position with the back plate resting in the opening in the hasp, and thevouter edge of the front plate resting against the front face of the hasp, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a hasp having an opening therein, of the lock-casing consisting of the front and back plates, the former hav- In testimony whereof I have signed this ing aperipheral flange, and a centrally-located f specification in the presence of two subscribr0 dlepression' onits rear face adapted to receive ing witnesses. t e edges of the back plate the said casin g be- 5 ing secured Within the opening in the hasp, FRANK with the flange of said casing resting against Witnesses: the outer face of the hasp, substantially asset '0.
