An object of the invention resides in providing a construction in which lthe table when in use may be partly supported by the cabinet.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a construction in which the table when removed from the cabinet may be supported independently of the cabinet with all of the sections in coplanar relation. Y A still further object of the invention resides in providing legs pivoted to the main section with braces cooperating' therewith and in providing the main section with a recess therein for the reception of said legs and braces when the table is collapsed.
Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.
In the drawings:
FIG. l is a front elevational view of a combination cabinet vand table illustrating an embodiment ofthe invention.
FIG. 2 is an end elevational View of the cabinet with the table collapsed and mounted on the cabinet.
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing the table attached to the'cabinet and raised to bring the main sect-ion in a position for use and with one of' the end secv tions illustrated in dotted lines in position of use.
FIG. 4 is an elevational view Vshowing the table detached from the'cabinet with all of the sections in positions of use.
FIG. 5 is an inverted view of the table showing the arrangement'of legs and braces in the recess in the main section of the table.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary elevational view of a part of the structure shown in FIG. 2 and including the attaching means of the invention and drawn to a greater scale than FIG. 2.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary sectioal view taken on line 7--7 0f FIG. 1.
The invention comprises a cabinet A and a table B detachably connected to and supported by the cabinet.
-Both the cabinet and the table are constructed of sheet y vPatented July 18, 1967 ICC suing from the sides 13, top 10 and bottom 12 of the cabinet. The doors 15 are hingedly connected to the sides 13 by means of hinges 18. Latches 19 hold the doors in closed position. Within the cabinet are shelves 2t).
The table B is constructed in three sections 21, 22 and 23. The section 21 being the main section and the sections 22 and 23 being end sections. These end sections are hingedly connected to the section 21 by means of hinges 24 and by means of which the sections may be folded into continuation of one another as shown in FIG. 4 or folded to underlie the section 21 as shown in FIG. 2. Each section is constructed with a top 25 having depending marginal flanges 26 extending about the same and forming within the under portion of the various sections of recesses 27.
The table B is provided with U-shaped legs 31 and 32, preferably tubular in form and flattened out at their ends and pivotally connected to the flanges 26 by means of the hinges 24. These legs have pivoted to them by means of rivets 36 jointed knee braces 34 which are also pivoted to the flanges 26 by means of rivets 35. In addition to the braces 34, other braces 37 are employed which are pivoted on the rivets 36. These braces have connecting portions 38 adapted to be received in the re-entrant angles between the end flanges 26 and tops 25 of the end sections 22 and 23. The braces 37 may be disconnected from the sections 22 and 23 and braces 34 folded to permit of inserting the braces and the legs 31 and 32 into the recess 27 in the main section 21 of the table.
For the purpose of detachably connecting the table B to the cabinet A, two plate-like fittings 41 are employed each overlying the outer surface of one of the sides 13 of the cabinet. One of these fittings is shown in FIG. 6 and is angular in form having a horizontal leg 42 and a vertical leg 43. The horizontal leg 42 is pivoted by means of a pintle 44 to the side 13 of the cabinet which it overlies. The leg 43 is constructed with a substantially vertical slot 45 closed at its ends. The upper end of this slot is formed with an offset 46 extending away from the back 11 of the cabinet. When the table is collapsed the two end sections 22 and 23 are folded to overlie 4the main section 21 and the parts mounted upon the outer surface of the back 11 as shown in FIG. 2. The section 23 of the table has headed studs 47 issuing outwardly therefrom and adapted to travel in the slots 45 of legs 43 of fittings 41. To permit of inserting the stud 47 in said slot the fittings 41 are loosely journalled on the pintles 44 and the slot 45 is formed with an enlargement 48 permitting of inserting the heads of the studs 47 into the slot. These enlargements are situated midway between the ends of the slots as shown in FIG. 6. The offset 46 and the lower end of the slot 45 are disposed the same distance from the rear surface of the back 11 of cabinet A. Slot 45 is hence arranged on a slight incline. The fitting 41 being pivoted to the side 13 swings in a manner to move the section 23 of the table tight against the back 11 of the cabinet.
The use of the device is as follows: Table B is normally collapsed with the legs and braces received in the recess 27 in section 21 and with the two end sections 22 and 23 overlying the back 11 of cabinet A as shown in FIG. 2. The ttings 41 are then applied to the studs 47 by inserting the same through the enlargement 48 of the slots 45 of said fittings. The table is then raised until the stud 47 is engaged in the offset 46 of said fitting. The parts will then be supported with the upper edges of the sections 21 and 23 lying substantially at the same elevation as the top 10 of cabinet A. The hinge connection afforded through pintle 44 brings the folded structure into close contact with the back 11 of cabinet A. The length of the section 21 of the table is substantially equal to table height so that the legs 31 and 32 may be folded into the recess 27 in section 21. When the table is desired for use, the table is lifted slightly and the studs 47 swung out of offset 46 and into the slot 45. The entire table is then moved upwardly until the studs 47 are in the lower ends of slots 45 as shown in FIG. 3. When the main section 21 is swung upwardly as shown in FIG. 3, the upper surface of the top 25 of section 21 will lie in continuation of the upper surface of the top of cabinet A. The section 22 may depend from the section 21 as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3 or the same may be swung upwardly into continuity with the section 21 as shown in full lines in FIG. 3. After the table has been raised, legs 31 are swung downwardly and the braces 34 moved into rectilinear position as shown in FIG. 3. If the section 22 is to be used the same is swung upwardly and the braces 37 applied to hold the said section in usable position. The arrangement of the parts then is as shown in FIG. 3.
If the entire table is to be used, the table will be detached from the cabinet by raising section 23 suiciently to bring the studs 47 opposite the enlargements 48. The fittings 41 may then be moved outwardly to free the section. The legs 32 are then swung outwardly and downwardly and the braces pivoted thereto and cooperating with the sections 21 and 23 applied. The table when so erected as shown in full lines in FIG. 5 may be moved about independently of the cabinet A. In assemblying the device the reverse procedure is employed.
The advantages of the invention are manifest. The table may be collapsed into a compact form and attached to the cabinet to form a compact unitary construction which may be readily stored in the trunk or interior of an automobile. When desired for use three sizes of table B may be procured, two of the sizes utilizing the cabinet for a support at one end of the table. When removed from the cabinet a still further size of table results when the other section of the table is moved into operative position. The invention is simple in construction and can be manufactured at a nominal expense. Erection of the parts is quickly made and likewise the folding of the structure into its compact form.
