SET OF FINGER RINGS WITH INTERFITTING PORTIONS Filed Oct. l6, 1963 INVENTOR.
BERNARD A. KIRSHBAUM mammszmw \ATTORNEY I United States Patent Ofiice 3,307,374 Patented Mar. 7, 1967 3,307,374 SET OF FINGER RINGS WITH INTERFITTING PURTIONS Bernard A. Kirshbaum, 669 Paddock Road, Havertown, Pa. 19083 Filed Oct. 16, 1963, Ser. No. 316,689 7 Claims. (Cl. 63-1) This invention relates to improvements in finger rings and especially rings which are generally bought in pairs by very good friends. It has been customary for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years to give or receive rings as tokens of friendship between persons. Rings have also been used to denote a condition or status of the wearer, for example. Thus, in our society one type of ring worn by a woman indicates her betrothal and another type, her marriage. Within recent years rings have been exchanged or worn by both parties to a marriage. Pairs of rings are known in which one ring has one edge cut or formed to mate with a corresponding edge of the other so that there is indicated, symbolically, the inseparability and the unique suitability of the wearers of both rings to one another. However, it would be impossible physically to test the match of the two rings without removing them from the fingers of the wearers. Furthermore, in some forms of these rings their esthetic value was severely limited by the fact that the mating edge of the ring might be randomly cut or might not match the other edge of the ring so that the ring would appear incomplete.
It is therefore among the objects of the present invention to provide:
(1) a novel pair of rings having indicia formed therein which indicate a certain special relation between the respective wearers thereof.
(2) a pair of novel rings having mating sections indicative of the existence of a unique and special relation between the two wearers thereof.
Other objects of the invention will doubtless occur to those skilled in the art upon perusing the drawings, specification and claims herein.
FIGURE 1 is a plan view, partly in phantom, of a pair of novel rings constructed in accordance with one form of my invention.
FIGURE la is a side elevation view of one of the rings shown in FIG. 1 as seen from the line 1a1a.
FIGURE 1b is an elevation view of the other of the rings shown in FIG. 1 as seen from the line lb-lb.
FIGURE 2 shows another pair of rings constructed I according to another form of my invention.
FIGURE 3 shows one of a pair of mating rings, constructed in accordance with another form of my invention.
Referring to FIGURE 1 there is shown a ring 5 having a flat outer side surface portion 6 on which a projecting design such as the heart 7 is disposed. There is also shown another ring ,8 having a side surface portion 9 in which is formed an intaglio heart 10 which is designed to mate with the projecting heart 7 when the ring 8 has its that portion 9 brought, as shown in phantom, into engagement with the corresponding portion 6 of ring 5.
It will be seen that in the foregoing embodiment of my invention, the mating design occupied a fiat side surface po-rtion of each ring. FIG. 2 shows another form of my invention wherein there is a ring 11 and a slightly smaller ring 12 each of which have mating indicia sit uated over an extended area of the curved outer side surface of the rings. The ring 11 has a projecting name portion 13 and an intaglio name portion 14 which are designed to mate, respectively, with intaglio indicia 15 and projecting indicia 16 on the ring 12. It will be noted that in order to cause a mating action, the outer side surfaces of the ring will be rolled somewhat against one another, it being understood that the mating portions are to be spaced so that, despite the difference in the curvature of the respective rings, they will nonetheless engage one another properly. In this embodiment of the invention it is seen that the ring indicates a warm special relation between the persons named thereon. Additionally, proper identification of the respective owners of the rings is made easy by referring to the projecting names on each ring.
FIGURE 3 shows one of a pair of novel rings constructed in accordance with a third form of my invention. In this form, the ring 17 includes a design indicated generally at the numeral 18 which continues a predetermined distance around the outer sur-face of the ring. The design 18 is a projecting one so that the other ring of the pair (not shown) has a corresponding intaglio design spaced properly so as to be engaged by the pro jecting design portions upon rolling engagement of the outer surfaces of the two rings.
In the forms of the invention shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 wherein the designs are disposed on curved surfaces, it may be advisable to taper or bevel some of the sharp edges of the projecting design portions so that, as the two rings are rolled against one another, the projecting portions of one ring can easily engage and be disengaged from the intaglio portions of other of the pair.
In addition to being useful to indicate a special relation between two wearers, these novel rings may also be used to indicate a special relationship between members of a larger group. For example, the leader of the group may wear the ring with the projecting indicia whereas the others wear rings with corresponding intaglio mating indicia formed therein. Instead of a secret handshake identifying the members, testing of membership may be made by attempting to match the mating portions of the leaders ring (or of any other rings projecting portion) with the intaglio portions of the other members rings. In addition, the leaders projecting portion could be used as an official seal with wax to make an impres sion therein.
Of course, the design located on the outer surfaces of the rings need not, as the design 18 is in FIG. 3, be regular nor need it be located toward the center of the outer surface. Many other modifications and alterations in the choice of designs, their location, etc., are possible which modifications and alterations do not depart from the essence of my invention. Accordingly I desire my invention to be limited solely by the claims herein.
I claim:
1. A pair of finger rings comprising:
(a) a first ring having an outer surface portion containing projecting indicia means extending generally perpendicular thereto and (b) a second ring having a corresponding outer surface portion containing intaglio indicia means, said projecting and intaglio indicia means being constructed to mate with one another upon engagement of said surface portions.
2. A pair of finger rings comprising:
(a) a first ring having a fiat outer surface portion on which projecting indicia means is disposed substantially perpendicular thereto and (b) a second ring having a flat outer surface portion in which intaglio indicia means are formed, said projecting and intaglio indicia means being constructed to mate with one another upon engagement of said flat outer surface portions of said rings.
3. A pair of rings comprising:
(a) a first finger ring means having a radially outwardly facing curved surface portion on which projecting indicia means are formed and (b) a second finger ring means having a radially outwardly facing curved surface portion on which intaglio indicia means are formed, said projecting and intaglio indicia means being constructed to mate with one another when said curved side-surface portions of said rings are brought into rolling engagement with one another.
4. The pair of rings according to claim 3 wherein said surface portion of said first ring also contains intaglio indicia means and said surface portion of said second ring also contains projecting indicia means which also mate with one another upon rolling engagement of said surface portions.
5. A pair of rings according to claim 3 wherein the inner diameters of said rings are different.
6. A pair of finger rings comprising:
(a) a first ring means having a radially outwardly facing curved surface portion on which projecting indicia means are formed, said indicia extending to at least one-half of the outer circumferential dimension of said first ring, and
(b) a second ring means having a radially outwardly facing curved surface portion with intaglio indicia means corresponding generally to said projecting ingagement of said surface portions. 7. The pair of rings according to claim 6 wherein the inner diameters of said rings are different.
