SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,497, dated February 16, 1886.

Beit known that I, JACOB C. SOTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Pottstown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of boilers for steam-heating apparatus in which the generator is contained within an outer casing, the object of my invention being to combine the boiler withl an outer casing in two or more sections, the section through which the connections of the usual boiler attachments pass being a permanent part of the general structure, but the other section or sections being readily detached when access has to be had to the generator for the purpose of cleansing the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my improved boiler for steam-heating purposes; Fig. 2, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, perspective views illustrating the construction of the outer casing of the boiler, and Fig. :3 an enlarged view of part of the casing.
The boiler preferably consists, mainly, of the outer shell, a, the inner shell, b, the easing d of the iire-box D, and a plate, e, connecting the two shells together at the top, the outer shell, a, and lire-box casing d being connected together at the bottom.
Between the outer shell, a, and inner shell and casing, d, is an annular space, E, the lower portion of which is devoted to water, the upper portion to steam. A series of tubes, G, extend from the top plate, e, to the re-box, and form communications between the latter and the space H, between the outer casing, A, and the boiler, the said space having a valved outlet, h, which communicates with any neighboring chimney.
To the top g of the outer casing is suspended a fuel-reservoir, I, preferably of cylindrical form, and terminating Within the fire-box, the said top of the casing being furnished with a hinge, n, to close or expose the top of the reservoir. The grate J is supported by the base which forms the foundation of the entire structure, and in front of this base is a hinged door, i, on raising which an opening will be exposed, and through the latter may be withdrawn from (No model.)

The fire-box has an extension, j, through which access may be had to the ignited fuel, and this extensionis furnished with a hinged door, m. The products of combustion from the fire-box take the course pointed out by the arrows from the firebox to the outlet h.
There. is nothing new in the general construction of the boiler, my invention being restricted to the outer casing, A, and its relation to any boiler of the class described above. rlhis casing, as will be seen on referring to Figs. 2, 3, and 4, is made in sections w, w', and w'2 in the present instance, and the removable top g preferably made in two parts separated from each other, as shown in Fig. 3. The first section, w, is a permanent part of the structure, composing the boiler and its base, the extension j of the boiler, and pipe n', the connections of the water-gage p, of the gage-cocks g, feedpipe t, and discharge-cock S, all passing through this section of the casing, the latter being for those reasons made permanent. The vertical edges and upper edges of all the sections are flanged,so that theycan be secured to each other by bolts y, as shown in the enlarged view, Fig. 5, the top g being secured to the upper iianges by similar bolts.
As shown in the sectional plan, Fig. 2, the outlet-branch h, through which'the products of the combustion escape, forms a part of the section w of the casing.
In boilers of the class to which my improvement relates the sides of the dues soon become coated with soot, and the tubes are often more or less choked, so that it becomes necessary to cleanse them from time to time.
As heretofore constructed there was no suitable provision for gaining ready access to the boiler so that the latter might be cleansed; but in my improved boiler the sections w and w can be easily removed and the boiler exposed for the ready application ot' cleansing instruments thereto without disturbing any of the usual attachments, for the section w, to which these attachments are restricted, remains a fixed portion of the structure.
The outer easing, A, may consist of but two sections, one being fixed and the other, as well as the top of the easing, removable.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a steam-boiler of the class described with an outer casing consisting of two or more sections and a removable 5 top, one section being fixed for the passage through it of the connections of the usual steaim-boi1er attachments, and the other secion or sections detachable, substantially as set orth.
