y COMBINED SHUTTBR PASTBNER AND SHUTTER BOWER. No. 336,355. Patented Feb. 16, 1886.4
UNITED STATES PATENT Ormes.
SUMNER SHAV, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED SHUTTER-FASTENER AND SHUTTER-BOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,355, dated February 16,1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SUMNER SHAW', a citi` zen ofthe United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Window- Blind Catch-Lock and Bolt-Plate, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of boltlocks and sill-plates designed to attach to window blinds and sills, and its object is to secure the former to the latter at any angle and in such a manner as to impede the random or unobstructed swing of the blind when the same is not closed.
My invention therefore consists in a springbolt or catch,a resisting-spring, andan actuatinglever or key,(the above aggregation comprises the catch-lock,) which are severally arranged and secured within a suitable case or cover and vertically attached to the exterior face of thelower or bottom frame of said blind in proximity to the hinged corner, beneath which is located the perforated receiving boltplate secured to the window ledge or sill, and which receives the bolt or catch and locks the blind when adjusted to any desired position.
Further improvements in detail will hereinY after be specitically described, and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is an isometrical projection of a closed window-blind and window-ledge bearing my improved catch-lock and bolt-plate, respectively. Fig. 2 illustrates in side elevation a blind opened and secured at right angles to the window, which, with the boltcase, is in vertical section. Fig. 3 exhibits a rear view of the lock in elevation, with the bolt depressed, and also dotted into designate the position of the actuating-lever and the bolt when retracted. Fi g4 is a view in perspective of the actuating key or lever. Fig. 5 represents a modication of my invention, with the parts made interchangeable to permit the right and left use of the bolts in their practical application.
Like letters of reference designate similar parts in the various views thereof, referring to which- A indicates the blinds, and B the connecting-hinges. C C are the lower or bottom frames ofthe blinds, and which receive and form the bed for said locks D, to which they are firmly secured by screws E.
F indicates the bolt-plate, pierced with the concentric rectangular openings G to receive said bolt, while the securing-screws are shown at H, confining said plate to the ledge or sill I ofthe window-frame J.
K, Fig. 3, indicates the flanges for the reception of the binding-screws E. Y
L shows the depressed bed or chamber receiving the bolt lll. N and O designate the arms of said bolt projecting at right angles. The former receives the lower end of the resisting-spring P, while the latter steadies and secures a uniform movement of said bolt.
Q exhibits the conoidal recess in the side of bolt, through which the same is actuated by the key R, semi-rotated by the lever S. The movement ofthe parts is indicated by the dotted lines, the swing of the lever being in the direction of the arrow.
T is the offset from the bed of the lock-case which, in connection with the arm N of the bolt, previously described, forms the pocket for the resisting-spring l). Said spring holds the bolt firmly in a depressed position, whence it enters into one of the rectangular spaces piercing the bolt-plate F. Said spaces are so formed as to insure the entrance of the bolt end by compensating for the irregular distances the blind may be hinged away from the window casing. These perforations should exceed in their length double the diameter of the bolt M, while their width is the same, to insure close contact, and to avoid shitting or rattling of the blind.
Lugs U are cast upon the bottom of the bolt-plates to facilitate their level adjustment upon the window-ledges.
In attaching my improved catch-lock to the exterior of window-blinds l previously mortise through the lower frame of the blind, at the determined point, to make an opening for the insertion of the key R. lVhen in a situation to operate the bolt, the lever or handle S assumes a vertical position next the window when the blinds are closed, and easily accessible to the occupant, by whom the blind may be swung and locked at any assumed angle by I DO releasing the rocker-handle S, permitting the bolt to drop into one of the rectangular openings in the bolt-plate.
The direction of the dotted lines, Fig. 3, indicate the manner of withdrawing the bolt i to release the blind.
In the modified construction of my improved invention, Fig. 5, the additional features are duple segmental key-rests V V, a recess, W, in the bolt, permitting the unimpeded vertical movement of the same, and a ehamber,-X, in the head of said bolt to receive the resisting-spring P. Obviously the arrangement of these features permits the bolt M to beused in a right or left hand position, While the absence of numerous parts simplies and renders my improved Windowblind eatehiook effectual and inexpensive.
Having described the operation and construction of my improved invention, what I 2o desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s In an organized shutter-fastening, the bolt M, and supporting-arms N O, the recess Q, and rocker-key R, operating in combination 25 with a sill-plate, F, having lugs U, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have signed this speci- -eatiou in presence of two attesting witnesses.
SUMNER SHAW.
