MANUFACTURE OF CARTONS Filed Aug. 5, 1965 1 I INVENTOR BERN: RAYMOND WATSON ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,362,527 MANUFACTURE OF CARTONS Eerie Raymond Watson, Leeds, England, assignor to John Waddington Limited, Yorkshire, England Filed Aug. 5, 1965, Ser. No. 477,524 Claims priority, application Great Britain, Sept. 3, 1964,
36,048/64; Dec. 12, 1964, 50,694/64 1 Claim. (Cl. 206--45.29)
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A one-piece carton blank having an integral scored cover flap with cut middle area constituting a hinged upwardly folded display portion of the cover and also having end flaps for the back wall which are narrower than the end flaps for the bottom and front walls, the bottom and front wall flaps being striped on one surface at their extreme edges of the blank with adhesive.
This invention relates to the manufacture of cartons or boxes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a new form of carton blank which will improve the ease with which adhesive may be applied.
A further object of the present invention is to speed up the application of the adhesive and to facilitate greater accuracy of application of the adhesive.
A further object of the present invention is to reduce the amount of adhesive which is to be applied to the carton blank.
A still further object of the present invention is to reduce the amount of material required to make the carton blank.
Yet another object of the present invention is the provision of a carton blank which can be erected quicker by automatic machinery.
According to the present invention, a carton blank comprises a plurality of hingedly connected portions of cardboard or other suitable material, the said portions having hingedly attached thereto pieces of cardboard or other suitable material adapted to form the end sections of the carton or box, characterised in that one of the said pieces of each end section is somewhat narrower than the remaining pieces of the said end section.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the onepiece cardboard blank comprises cover, back wall, bottom and front wall portions respectively adjacent to each other and separated by crease lines. On opposite sides of the back, bottom and front wall portions are end flaps which are also separated from their respective main portions by crease lines. Each of the end flaps at the sides of the back wall portion is narrower than the end flaps at the sides of the bottom and front wall portions. A band of adhesive coating is applied to one of the surfaces at the edge of each of the wider end flaps only. When the carton is erected, all of these end flaps are folded inwardly to form the side sections of the carton.
'In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the carton blank;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the erected carton; and
3,362,527 Patented Jan. 9, 1968 FIGURE 3 is a front view of the carton of FIGURE 2 with its lid in the open position.
Referring to the drawings, the rectangular carton blank comprises a cover portion 9 and back, bottom and front wall portions 1, 2 and 3, respectively of cardboard or other suitable material, these portions having crease lines 4 and 5 therebetween. Attached to the bottom and front portions 2 and 3 are end flap portions 6 and 7 respectively, and attached to the back portion 1 are end flap portions 8 which are somewhat narrower than the bottom end flap and front end fiap portions 6 and 7. The portions 6, 7 and 8 are adapted to form the side sections of the carton.
Also attached to the portion 1 by a score line is a cover 9 which is scored at 10 approximately midway of its depth and which has formed therewith an integral flap 11 which, when the cover 9 is in an open vertical position forms a display panel for the carton or box (FIGURE 3). The cover 9 is provided with an integral portion 12 having therein a slot 13 which co-operates with a tongue 14 on the portion 3 for effecting closure of the carton or box.
The end flap bottom end flap 7 and side end fiap 6 have applied thereto, at the portions 6A and 7A an adhesive coating which may be applied by a single roller adhesive coating machine (not shown) either before or during erection of the carton or box, the said machine after engagement with the portions 6A and 7A passing clear of the portions 8 without engagement therewith.
The carton blank is intended to form a carton as shown in FIGURES 2 and 3, the end sections of the carton being secured by heat and/ or pressure.
I claim:
1. A one-piece cardboard blank for a rectangular carton comprising: a cover portion; a back wall portion adjacent said cover portion; a bottom portion and a front wall portion dependent from said bottom portion; said bottom portion being separated from each of said back wall and said front wall portions by crease lines; each of said back, bottom and front wall portions having end flaps on opposite sides thereof, said end flaps being infolded to form the side walls of said carton and the end flaps of said back wall being slightly narrower than the end flaps of said bottom and front walls; said end flaps being coated on the one surface of the edges along the free ends thereof with an adhesive coating; said side walls of the carton being formed by securing together said back, bottom and front end flaps with the bottom end flap interiorly thereof; and said carton blank including an integral scored cover flap with a cut middle area constituting the hinged upwardly folded display portion of the carton when said cover is in open position.
