Description
Nov. 7, 1967 M. GUARINO BARBER RAZOR FOR DOUBLE EDGE BLADES Filed Jan. 6, 1966 United States Patent 3,350,779 BARBER RAZOR FOR DOUBLE EDGE BLADES Michael Guarino, 8 Wilshire Lane, Plainview, N.Y. 11803 Filed Jan. 6, 1966, Ser. No. 519,078 1 Claim. (CI. 30-55 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a straight edge type safety razor that uses conventional thin multi-apertured razor blades. The blade is locked in place between two co-acting blade holders, one holder of which has apertures in line with the blade apertures and the other holder being provided with protuberances which enter the apertures in a co-acting locking relationship.
The prior art as shown in Guarino US. 2,758,373 Aug. 14, 1956 employs rigid non-flexible double edge blades. Such blades are especially constructed.
This invention is an improvement over the prior Guarino patent in that conventional universally available thin flexible double edge blades are used.
It is an object of this invention to provide a barber type razor adapted to use conventional universally available thin flexible double edge blades.
It is another object to provide guard means to a barber type razor adapted to use conventional universally available thin flexible double edge blades thereby converting the razor to a safety razor.
It is another object to provide a barber type razor using conventional thin flexible double edge blades, exposing but one cutting edge while in use.
These and other objectives of this invention will become readily apparent upon reading the descriptive disclosure herein of an illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing and in which;
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of the razor showing a handle and a swingable blade holder, said holder having a guard thereon, and showing in dotted outline the position of the guard before insertion on the holder,
FIG. 2 is a section view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1 and showing the manner of the interior construction of the blade holder,
FIG. 3 is a section view taken on line 33 of FIG. 1 and showing the relationship of the guard over double edge blade, and
FIG. 4 is an exploded view of the razor showing by means of dotted line the manner of assembly of the component parts.
Turning to the drawing, the razor comprises two major parts, the handle and the assembled blade holder 11.
The handle 10 is of conventional manufacture and comprises a pair of suitably spaced-apart plastic pieces held apart by a spacer element secured thereto.
The razor blade holder 11 consists essentially of a longitudinal cover 12 of a generally U-shaped cross section. The cover 12 is made of metal and is provided with a substantially semicircular head 13.
The opposed sides 14 and 15 of the cover 12 are flat and are outwardly bent at 16 to accommodate interiorly located elements (FIG. 2). The rear part of the cover 12 is provided with an aperture 17 in both of the walls 14 and 15. fiat metal pivot plate 18 having a finger receivlzrzg portion 19 is provided with a suitably located aperture Turning now to FIG. 4, the manner of assembling the blade holder and the conventional centrally apertured double edge blade 21 is shown. The blade holder of this invention is of great importance and consists of two coacting elements, namely a flat metal multi-apertured plate 22 and a flat metal multi-protuberant plate 23 the pro tuberance 24 of which lockingly engage the apertures 25 walls of plate 22.
As shown in FIG. 4 the plates 22 and 23 are each provided with an augularly pointed terminus 26 at one end and with a fiat front edge 27. The plates 22 and 23 are substantially identical in height, width and length except that plate 22 is provided with apertures 25 and plate 23 is provided with hemispherical punchings or protuberances 24 adapted to lock to the walls of said apertures 25.
The two blade holding plates 22 and 23 are secured to the pivot plate 18 by spot weldings 28 to form an integral unit.
The welded holding unit consisting of the elements 18, 22 and 23 is inserted into the cover 12 so that aperture 20 of the pivot plate 18 mates with aperture 17 of said cover 12. The assembly of cover blade holder is then swingably disposed in the handle 10 in the apertures 29 thereof by means of a pin 30 which pin also passes through the apertures 17 of the cover 12 and aperture 20 of the pivot plate.
The blade holder assembly 11 is widely swingable on the handle 10. However, the pivot plate 18 and its welded element is restrictedly movable in an out of its cover 12 but a few degrees of rotation before the rear edge 31 of the cover 12 hits the pivot plate 18. However, this limited movement of plates 22 and 23 away from the edges 32 and the cover 12 is sufiicient to expose the edges 27 to the atmosphere to permit the removal and insertion of a blade 21.
As shown in the drawing the sharp edges of blade 21 extends suitably beyond the respective edges 33 and 34 of the blade holders 22 and 23. The head 13 (FIG. 3) permits the unused inner edge of blade 21 to be disposed away from metal contact thereto.
A guard or guide 40 of generally U-shaped spring steel construction and of a length about that of a blade 21 is provided to slip over the cover 12. The guard 40 is provided with a front plate 41 having a bent lip 42 to engage the ledge 43 of the plate 22.
The rear wall 44 of the guard 40 is provided with a serrated edge 45 which functions as a safety guard for the exposed razor blade edge (FIG. 3).
The guard 40 also functions as a guide in the cutting of hair and beards.
I claim:
A. barber type razor for use with conventional thin flexible centrally apertured double edge blades compris ing a first flat blade holder plate having an angularly pointed rear end and a blade holding front end having a plurality of apertures therein to mate with the apertures of said blade; a second fiat blade holder plate also having an angularly pointed rear end and a blade holding front end having a plurality of protuberances adapted to pass through said apertured blade and to mate with the walls of said first blade holder; an apertured pivot plate having a rear finger operable portion, secured rigidly at the front end portion to said first and second blade holder pointed ends intermediate thereof; an apertured longitudinal substantially U-shaped cover having a semi-circular head at the U-bend disposed over the blade holders and with its aperture in line with the aperture of said pivot plate; an apertured razor handle disposed over said pivot plate and cover plate in aligned relationship of apertures; a pin disposed through said aligned apertures of said handle and said pivot plate and said cover; and a guide of substantially U-configuration slidably disposed over said cover adjacent said blade, whereby restricted angular movement of said cover relative to said pivot plate and blade holders permits replacement of blades.
