v GRIPPER FOR PRINTING-MACHINES. No. 323,168. Patented July 28, 1885..
WITNESSES: mv mun: 6. Z. %m-
' ATTORNEY PHILIP LINDEMEYER, J 1%., OF JERSEY CITY, NEXV JERSEY.
GRIPPER' FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,168, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed April 16, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, PHILIP LINDEMEYER, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, State ofNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grippers for Printing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is to produce an elastic gripper for grasping the paper and conveying it into the press for printing upon. The object is to have elastic grip upon the material which will not crease or indent the work, as is the troublelwith the present devices used unless set very carefully; and, furtheremore,to lessen the noise made by the grippers when clamping the sheets of paper to the cylinder.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents side elevation of part of a cylinder with gripper in position; Fig. 2,a modified form of gripper.
a. represents cylinder of press; I), grippershaft; 0, gripper.
My device consists in securing to the under side of the grippers c (of any shape or form now in use) the spring d, at e, and the other or outer end being adjusted by set-screw f, placed at any point between the outer end and shank of gripper c, and the spring d only clamping the paper. It also enables the gripper 0 to be firmly secured to the shaft 12 by a h, as in the present devices used. By means of the said spring (I clamping the paper the noise occasioned bythe common gripperc striking upon the cylinder is lessened, as the blow of the spring 01 is more elastic, and being readily adjusted to any tension upon the paper by set-screwf, where, as in the common gripper, as c, the proper adj ustnient of several grippers on one shaft,b, consumes valuable time in some instances, and being so rigid and stiff they often get displaced by the blow of clamping; and by the elastic grip upon the paper there is less liability of damaging the stock by denting and tearing.
Having described myinvention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is A printing-press gripper having the spring cl attached to the under side thereof and adjusted by the set-screw f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name,in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of April, 1885.
