Description
UNTTED sTATEs PATENT onricn.
THOMAS SANFORD, OF GLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
STEAM-0DCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,314, dated May 14, 1861,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SANFORD, of Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful or Improved Steam-Cock; aud do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following s} 3eci1'ication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which-w Figure l, is an external view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3, a transverse section of the said improved steam cock.
In carrying out my invention, I make use not only of a hollow and screw threaded cylindrical gate, but of a screw threaded seat cr seat stand the former being fixed to a cylindrical stem and the latter to a partition which extends across the chamber of the cock chamber. V
In the drawings, A denotes the body of the cock as provided with coupling screws a, c and a chamber Z), the latter being divided by a partition c, c, extended across it` as shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Y
B is the gate which is represented in Figs. 2 and 3, is made cylindrical and hollow and encompasses and screws upon a hollow cylindrical dome or seat stand C, which is at fixed to or screwed into the partition c, c, is open at bottom and is constructed with a passage or hole d, extending laterally through its screw. -The screws of such gate and seat stand or dome are arranged as shown in said Figs. 2 and 3.
The gate, B, is afliXed-to the lower end of a cylindrical rod or stem D, which passes through a neck F, and is provided with a hand wheel E, which is iXed on its upper end. On the upper end of the said neck a stutng box cap 7 is screwed the lower part of the neck being chambered (as shown at c, 6,) for the reception of the gate, B. By seizing the hand wheel E and rotating it the gate B, may be screwed either upward or downward on the part C, and so as to either cover or more or less increase the passage cl.
The part C is constructed with a seat g, g, for the gate to bring up against, and when such gate is screwed firmly down upon the seat the passage of a liquid or steam through thesaid part C of t-he cock will be estopped.
The nature or principle of my invention (it will be seen from the above) consists in not only constructing the parts, B, and C, of the steam cock, hollow and to screw together,
or one in or on the other, but in making one of them with a lateral opening d, which by the rotation and screwing of the part B relatively to the other or stationary part C, will be either closed or more or less opened in order that the passage of steam Dr a liquid through the partition of the cock chamber, may be either wholly or more or less prevented as circumstances may require.
Another mode in which I have contemplated the application of this principle or character by which my invention may be distinguished from others is to make the part Bto screw into instead of upon or around the part C, or its equivalent and to form the lateral opening in either of such parts.
I do not claim a steam cock as made not only with a partition across its chamber, but with a valve seat in such partitipn, and a valve alixed vto a stem furnished with a screw to screw into a neck of the case but,
I claim- My improved steam cock as constructed with its parts B C hollow and to screw together or one on orin the other and, with one of them provided with a lateral opene ing (l, substantially as specified,.the whole being applied to the stem D, and partition c, as and so as to operate as described.
