Description

Jan. 25, 1966 M. 5. mm 3,231,128
PLASTIC BASKET CONSTRUCTION Filed Feb. 19, 1964 FFIGA FIG5 INVENTOR. MA X KL E IN United States Patent Ofilice Patented. Jars. 25, 1%56 3,231,128 PLASTIC BASKET CONSTRUCTION Max S. Kieiu, Detroit, Mich, assignor to Max Klein, inc, Ferndale, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Filed Feb. 19, 1964, Ser. No. 345,890 3 Claims. (Cl. Mil-63) The present invention relates to plastic tubular bodies, and more particularly to the assembly and securing of an outer lamination or ornamental cover therefor.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a simply constructed and inexpensive plastic tubular body or a basket having an ornamental cover mounted thereover and effectively secured thereto.
These and other objects will be seen in the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a basket illustrating one form of the invention.
FIG. 2 is a vertical section thereof taken in the direction of arrows 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of the basket.
FIG. 4 is an exploded sectional view of the tubular body, the tubular ornamental cover and channel assembly ring.
FIG. 5 is a front perspective view of the ornamental cover.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that embodiments other than baskets are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
Basket body Referring to the drawing, the present basket, as one form of the invention, includes an elongated plastic tubular body 11 open at its upper end and at its lower end having a transverse integral plastic bottom 12. The latter is arranged axially inward of the lower end of the body to define therewith an annular depending flange 13.
The reverse turned annular integral lip 14 extends downwardly from the upper end of said body upon its exterior and is spaced radially outward from the wall of the body defining annular groove 15, FIG. 4.
Basket cover An ornamental tubular open ended cover 16 is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, made from a suitable strip of stock of plastic, vinyl, paper or a textured material which may have a design as at 23, for illustration. Said cover is formed into a tapered tubular body, FIG. 5, with the free edge portions overlapped and suitably secured together as by cementing or stitching as at 17. This cornpletes the unit tapered open ended cover shown in section in FIG. 4 and assembled in FIG. 2.
The ornamental tubular open ended cover 16, which may merely be of a desired color, is snugly positioned over the outer tapered surface of body 11. The upper annular edge of said cover is nested and retained within the annular groove 15 formed by lip 14, FIG. 2. The lower annular edge of cover 16 is in registry with depending flange 13 extending to its bottom edge.
Channel base ring The basket is completed by the assembly of the plastic channel ring base 13 which includes the upstanding substantially parallel inner flange 19 and outer flange 26.
Said ring is shown separately in FIG. 4 and assembled in the basket construction, FIG. 2.
To complete the assembly of the has et, said channel ring base 18 is snugly mounted and secured over the depending flange 13 and the lower annular edge portion of cover to. In the illustrative embodiment a suitable adhesive cement or glue is interposed as at 21 between inner flange 19 and depending flange 13. The outer flange Zti retainingly engages and protectively encloses the lower free edge of cover 16 completing the basket assembly.
in the illustrative embodiment the body is tapered upwardly and outwardly, and cover 16 is similarly tapered. It is contemplated that body 11 could be cylindrical and of uniform diameter if desired or any other suitable shape. The primary consideration is that the cross-sectional shape of the cover corresponds to the cross-sectional shape of the body and that the longitudinal shape is similar so that when assembled said cover will snugly engage the outer surface of the body in the manner shown in FIG. 2.
Cover 16 may be in the form of a vinyl plastic or a textured paper or other flexible suitable covering material, preferably having an ornamental design as at 23 for illustration, to improve the appearance or" the basket or of a desired color to match the decoration of a particular room.
Cover 16 may be frictionally assembled with respect to the body or alternately a layer of cement or glue may be employed as at 22, FIG. 2 for further anchoring the cover to the body.
The construction of the bottom ring is such and its dimensions are such that it will frictionally snap into place. However, the use of cement or glue for securing the ring in place is advisable to insure continued assembly of the parts.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invention the the plastic used for the body and the base ring is polystyrene or equivalent plastic material.
While the invention is illustrated in the form of a basket, it may be embodied in other forms. For example, the assembly may be the same as shown in the drawing except that the bottom 12, FIGS. 2 and 4, may be omitted, to provide any tubular body, such as a lamp shade, for illustration.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the following claims.
I claim:
1. A basket comprising a plastic tubular body open at its upper end;
a transverse integral plastic bot-tom arranged inwardly of its lower end defining therewith an annular depending flange;
a reversed turned annular and integral lip extending downwardly trom said upper end upon its exterior and spaced radially outward defining an annular groove;
an ornamental tubular open ended cover snugly positioned over the outer surface of the body with its upper annular edge nested and retained within said lip and with its lower annular edge in registry with the bottom of said depending flange; and
a plastic channel ring base with upstanding inner and outer annular flanges snugly mounted and secured over said depending flange and the lower annular edge of the cover.
