22/ How/#Ro B. F/NKENZELLER HTToR/VEY United States Patent O M 3,216,563 REFILLABLE THIN LIPSTICK HOLDER Howard B. Fnkenzeller, Waterbury, Conn., assigner to Virjune Manufacturing Co., Inc., Waterbury, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Filed July 8, 1963, Ser. No. 293,367 4 Claims. (Cl. 206-56) This invention relates to improvements in lipstick containers, and more particularly to a refillable thin type of lipstick container having a cartridge cup which is detachably secured to the threaded elevator stud located inthe cylindrical body shell of the container.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 represents a full size side view of the rellable slim lipstick container embodying the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the completely assembled slim lipstick container, with the lipstick cartridge cup shown in retracted position.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional View on a larger scale, taken through the lipstick cartridge cup and the head portion of the threaded elevator stud.
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken along the line 4 4 of FIG. 2, looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows.
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view, taken along the line 5 5 of FIG. 2, looking downwardly.
FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view, taken along the line 6 6 of FIG. 2, looking downwardly.
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of the lipstick cartridge cup and the upper portion ofthe elevator stud, showing the detachable dovetail connection therebetweaen.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a cylindrical body sheli having a closed lower end 11, and the numeral 12 indicates a short ornamental decorative intermediate cylindrical band shell, the lower end of which is adapted to have a friction fit within the top of said cylindrical body shell. The decorative band shell 12 is provided with an inturned horizontal lower flat rim 13, and above said rim said band shell has plurality of inturned lugs 14. The band shell 12 is also provided with an exterior concave intermediate linger-engaging annular groove 15 having a shoulder 16a, above which is an upper cylindrical section 16, which is fitted within a top cylindrical cap 19.
Provision is also made of an inner cylindrical shell 17 having an inwardly extending annular groove 17a near the bottom thereof for receiving the inturned lugs 14 previously mentioned. The inner shell 17 has a lower inturned rim 17h adapted to seat upon the rim 13 of the band shell 12 and said rim has a central rectangular aperture 17C shaped to loosely embrace an elevator stud 23. The inner shell 17 is also provided with an angular oval top end 18, and is adapted to be covered by the upper cylindrical cap 19, as clearly shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
Provision is also made of a lipstick cartridge cup 20 of cylindrical shape, preferably of plastic, having a closed bottom end 21, and provided with a plurality of longitudinal upstanding interior ribs 21a for holding a lipstick cartridge C, shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2.
3,216,563 Patented Nov. 9, 1955 ICC The cartridge cup 20 is provided with a depending wedge-shaped prong 22 which is adapted :to have a detachable connection with a dovetail slot 28, of similar shape, in an enlarged head 27 of the elongated reduced elevator stud 23, which has a pair of parallel flat sides 24 and a pair of multilated opposite threaded sections 25, 26.
Provision is also made of a tapped cylindrical insert 29 frictionally fitted within the upper end of the body shell 1t), and which is adapted to fit the mutilated threads 25, 26 of the elevator stud 23. If desired, the insert 29 may be a part of the decorative band shell 12.
Operation To refill the lipstick holder just described the operator need only remove the upper cap 19 and twist the inner shell 17 while holding the body shell 10 stationary. The annular band 12 has an exterior concave finger-engaging annular groove 15 to facilitate removal of the cap 19 and to aid the operator in this twisting action. As a result lof this twisting motion the threaded stud 24 is also rotated causing it to move axially with respect to the threaded insert 29. The cartridge retaining cup 20 is attached to the head 27 of the stud 24 and will therefore move upwardly therewith. W'hen the cup 20 has approached its upper limit of axial travel it can be slid free of the tapered slot 28 in head 27 and another such cup (carrying a new lipstick cartridge) readily inserted in said slot 28. It should be noted that the angularly cut top portion 18 of the inner shell 17 will facilitate the refilling process just described when it is located as shown in FIG. 2.
In operation, it will be understood that the decorative band shell 12 has a detachable snap-action locking engagement with the bottom of the inner shell 17, which it embraces.
The assembly of the slim lipstick is completed by means of the upper cap 19 which surrounds the inner shell 17 and abuts against the shoulder 16a of the decorative band shell 12.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1.
