Filed July 1, 1963, Ser. No. 291,978 6 Claims. (Cl. 30-201) This invention relates generally to hair clippers and more particularly to a hair cutting guide attachment for a hair clipper.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment for ready attachment to a standard type of hair clipper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment for a hair clipper that is highly eflicient in operation and use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment that can be installed and operated by unskilled workers.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a hair clipper with a hair cutting guide assembly made in accordance with one form of the present invention applied thereto, parts of the assembly being shown in disassembled condition, the hair clipper being shown in dot-dash lines.
FIG. 2 is a front view on a reduced scale of the parts of FIG. 1 in assembled condition, parts being broken away.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of an attachment plate.
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken through the parts of FIG. 1 with the plate of FIG. 3 embodied therein.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a hair clipper is shown in dot-dash lines and is indicated generally at 10. The hair clipper 10 comprises a head 12 with a central opening 14 therein for receiving a threaded post 16 on which is swivelly mounted a comb plate 18 spaced from the head. A nut 20 on the post secures the parts together. An elongated handle 22 is formed integrally with the head 12. A cutting plate 24 is superimposed on the comb plate in the space between the comb plate and head 12 and connected to the cutting plate 24 there is a spring-pressed elongated handle 26 extending substantially parallel to the handle 22. By moving the handle 26 toward the handle 22, the cutting plate 24 will slide sidewise over the comb plate 18 and the comb plate will swivel on post 16 slightly relative to the cutting plate. The foregoing describes a conventional hair clipper.
In accordance with the present invention, a hair cutting guide assembly in the form of an attachment is provided for attaching to the hair clipper for guiding the hair cutting operation. This assembly comprises broadly a pair of superimposed nested upper and lower aluminum plates 30 and 32, respectively, provided with upstanding end flanges 34, 34, respectively.
On the upper plate 39, the flanges 34, 34 are each formed with a pair of guide rails 38, 38 along the outer surface of the side edges thereof. An integral threaded pin 4% extends outwardly of the flange between each pair of rails at the bottom thereof for receiving a knurled nut 3,12%,143 Patented Sept. 28, 1%65 42. Grooves 43 are formed on the flanges 34, 34 on their inner surfaces adjacent the bottom thereof.
On the lower plate 32, the flanges 36, 36 are each formed with a central open end slot 44 intersecting the top edge of the flange and closed at the bottom. This plate 32 is formed with a plate-like extension 46 extending from one long edge thereof at a slight angle to the plane of the body of the plate. This extension 46 is formed with teeth 48. Plate 32 constitutes an auxiliary and lowered comb plate.
The hair cutting guide assembly is applied to the clipper 10 by slipping the plate 30 underneath the comb plate 18 of the hair clipper, with the side edges of the comb plate riding in the grooves 43 in the plate 30, the plate 30 finally resting underneath the solid portion of the comb plate 18 of the hair clipper, with the teeth of the comb plate extending forwardly thereof. The auxiliary comb plate 32 is then positioned underneath the plate 30 and raised upwardly with its slotted flanges 36 riding upwardly between the rails 38 of the flanges 34 on the plate 30, the threaded pins 40 riding in the slots 44. The distance be tween the superimposed plates 30 and 32 can be predetermined and fixed by screwing the nuts 42 onto the pins 40. This distance determines the length of the hair left after cutting and can be adjusted by moving the plate 32 up and down.
In the modified form of hair cutting guide assembly shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the upper flanged plate 30' is formed with end flanges 34', 34 that are smooth on both surfaces thereof. Each flange carries a threaded pin 40' extending radially from the outer surface thereof. Plate 38, however, is formed with an extension 49 midway the ends thereof, which extension extends in a plane slightly angular relative to the body of the plate and terminates in a free end portion 51 that is disposed on the same plane as the plane of the body of the plate. The end portion 51 is formed with a central hole 53. Plate 30 is used in cooperation with an auxiliary comb plate 32' similar to comb plate 32.
In applying this assembly to the hair clipper 10', the plate 30' is attached to the post 16 by slipping the hole 53 over the top of the post 16 and screwing down on the nut 20 to clamp the free end portion 51 of the plate between the nut and the top of the body of the hair clipper 1b.
The auxiliary comb plate 32 is placed underneath the comb plate 18' of the hair clipper 10 and raised upwardly with its slotted flanges 36' engaging the pins 40' of plate 30'. At the desired height, the nuts 42' are screwed onto the pins 40' holding the comb plate 32' in moved adjusted position.
Referring now to the modification of the invention shown in FIGS. 5 to 7, inclusive, herein the hair cutting guide assembly is similar to the hair cutting guide assembly of FIGS. 1 to 3 except that the upper and lower plates 30a and 32a are sectional, each plate being formed of two sections or parts.
Plate Ella comprises sections 50 and 52. Section 50 is formed with a central extension 54 forming a continuation thereof. The extension 54 is formed with slanting side edges 55. The section 52 is formed with a dovetailed shaped groove 56 along the bottom surface thereof to receive the extension 54 on section 52 so that when the sections 50 and 52 are pressed together they form a unitary continuous plate as shown in FIG. 7. In plate 30a, threaded pins 57 are formed on the inner surfaces of the flanges 34a, 34a extending radially inwardly thereof, in alignment with pins 40a.
Plate 32a comprises two sections 60 and 62. Section 60 is formed with an extension 64 forming a continuation of section 60 and extension 46a. Extension 64 is formed with teeth 66, forming continuations of teeth 48a on extension 46a. The teeth 66 are only half the thickness 3 of the teeth 48a. A dovetail groove 68 is formed in the top surface of the section 60.
Section 62 is formed with an extension 70 on its upper surface forming a continuation thereof. The extension 70 is formed with slanting long edges 72.. Section 62 is formed with teeth 74 which are only half the thickness of the teeth 48a on section 60. When the sections 60 and 62 are pressed together, extension 70 slides in the dovetail groove 66 and the teeth 74 on section 62 ride over the teeth 66 on extension 64 and become superimposed thereon.
An elongated tubular turnbuckle device 80 is provided for actuating the slidable sections of the plates a and 32a. The turnbuckle device 80 has internal right-hand threads and left-hand threads at the ends thereof to correspond with the right-hand threads and left-hand threads on the pins 57 so that when the turnbuckle device 80 is turned in one direction the slidable plate sections are moved away from each other and when turned in the opposite direction, such sections are moved toward each other. By this means, a fine adjustment of the width of the plates can be had for fitting the assembly over various sized hair clippers. The outer surface of the turnbuckle may be knurled to facilitate rotation thereof.
In all other respects, the plate 30a and 32a are similar to the plates 30 and 32 of FIGS. 1 and 2, and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes .and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. For use with a hair clipping device having a cutting plate, and a comb plate, a device for guiding the hair cutting operation, said latter device comprising a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive said extension, the upper plate being interlocked to the comb plate of the hair clipping device, the lower plate being clamped to the upper plate, said lower plate having teeth constituting an auxiliary comb plate.
2. For use with a hair clipping device having a cutting plate, and a comb plate, a device for guiding the hair cutting operation, said latter device comprising a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive said extension, the upper plate being interlocked to the comb plate of the hair clipping device, the lower plate being clamped to the upper plate, said lower plate having teeth constituting an auxiliary comb plate, said lower plate being adjustable toward and away from the upper plate.
3. Ahair cutting guide assembly comprising, in combination, a hair clipping device, a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive said extension, threaded pins projecting from the ends of the upper plate, said lower plate having slots in the ends thereof interlocked with said pins, nuts on the ends of the pins for clamping the ends of the lower plate to the ends of the upper plate, said lower plate having teeth constituting a comb plate, and means for moving the sections of the plates toward and away from each other.
4. A hair cutting guide assembly comprising, in combination, a hair clipping device, a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive said extension, threaded pins projecting from the ends of the upper plate, said lower plate having slots in the ends thereof interlocked with said pins, nuts on the ends of the pins for clamping the ends of the lower plate to the ends of the upper plate, said lower plate having teeth constituting a comb plate, and means for moving the sections of the plates toward and away from each other, said means including threaded pins radiating inwardly from the ends of the plates and a turnbuckle device connected at both ends to said latter threaded pins.
5. A hair cutting guide assembly comprising, in combination, a hair clipping device, a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, each section of each plate having an upstanding end flange, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive the extension, threaded pins projecting outwardly of the flanges of the upper plate, threaded pins projecting inwardly of the flanges of the upper plate, the flanges of the lower plate being slotted and interlocked with the outwardly projecting pins on the upper plate, nuts on the ends of the outwardly projecting pins clamping the flanges to each other, said lower plate having teeth constituting a comb plate, said upper plate having grooves interlocked with the hair clipping device, and a turnbuckle device connected at both ends of the inwardly projecting pins on the upper plate for moving the sections of the plates toward and away from each other.
6. An attachment for a hair clipping device comprising a pair of nested superimposed U-shaped plates, one of said plates adapted to interlock with a part of the hair clipping device, said plates being sectional, one section of each plate having an extension forming a continuation thereof, each section of each plate having an upstanding end flange, the other section of each plate having a groove in the surface thereof to receive the extension, threaded pins projecting outwardly of the flanges of the upper plate, threaded pins projecting inwardly of the flanges of the upper plate, the flanges of the lower plate being slotted, and interlocked wtih the outwardly projecting pins on the upper plate, nuts on the ends of the outwardly projecting pins clamping the flanges to each other, said lower plate having teeth constituting a comb plate, said upper plate having grooves interlocked with the hair clipping device, and a turnbuckle device connected at both ends of the inwardly projecting pins on the upper plate for moving the sections of the plates toward and away from each other to adjust the attachment to various sized hair clipping devices.

FOR USE WITH A HAIR CLIPPING DEVICE HAVING A CUTTING PLATE, AND A COMB PLATE, A DEVICE FOR GUIDING THE HAIR CUTTING OPERATION, SAID LATTER DEVICE COMPRISING A PAIR OF NESTED SUPERIMPOSED U-SHAPED PLATES, SAID PLATES BEING SECTIONAL, ONE SECTION OF EACH PLATE HAVING AN EXTENSION FORMING A CONTINUATION THEREOF, THE OTHER SECTION OF EACH PLATE HAVING A GROOVE IN THE SURFACE THEREOF TO RECEIVE SAID EXTENSION, THE UPPER PLATE BEING INTERLOCKED TO THE COMB PLATE OF THE HAIR CLIPPING DEVICE, THE LOWER PLATE BEING CLAMPED TO THE UPPER PLATE, SAID LOWER PLATE HAVING TEETH CONSTITUTING AN AUXILIARY COMB PLATE.
