There are many articles of clothing which can best be pressed by steam pressing apparatus of the type used in commercial cleaning establishments. However, the bulk and expense of such apparatus as presently constructed completely rules out its use for most domestic users.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a foldaway presser which is comparatively light in Weight, relatively inexpensive, and adapted for compact storage so that it may be used in the average home.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a presser of the aforementioned character in which the presser heads are swingable upon suspension arms whose inner extremities are pivotally secured within an elongated vertical enclosure or cabinet, the heads being swingable between a horizontal, projected position outside of the cabinet and a vertical storage position completely within the cabinet. A related object is to provide sus pension arms connected to a support structure for the presser heads in such a way that the presser heads are automatically urged toward their horizontal or vertical positions contemporaneously with the swinging of the heads into and out of the cabinet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a presser in which the suspension means for the presser heads is adapted to orient the heads in a horizontal position for use by the operator, the suspension means also being operable for moving the presser heads and associated components into an upright cabinet of relatively shallow dimensions. Thus, the average home-owner can use the presser in existing kitchen and utility areas without having to provide a great deal of floor space for storage of the presser after use. Light-weight sheet material is used to fabricate the presser heads so that the presser can be relatively easily swung into and out of operating po sition by the average housewife with little difficulty.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a presser of the aforementioned character in which steam and vacuum lines are completely shielded or enclosed by the structure supporting the presser heads, steam application through the lower head being initiated by depression of a foot pedal or the like, and vacuum withdrawal of steam through the upper head being initiated by a control handle located on the upper head adjacent the handle provided for opening and closing the presser heads.
A further object of the invention is to provide a suspension or linkage means for pivotally connecting the presser heads to a vertical enclosure or cabinet, and which not only supports the presser heads but automatically tips the heads to the desired vertical or horizontal position at the same time the heads are swung inwardly or outwardly.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from consideration of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the drawings, there is illustrated a foldaway presser 10 adapted for storage within a vertically elongated enclosure or cabinet 12. The presser 10 is movable from a projected or operating position, as illustrated in FIG. 1, to a recessed or storage position, as illustrated position, as illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, the particular suspension or linkage means utilized permitting the presser 10 to be folded into relatively compact form so that the cabinet 12 need only be of relatively shallow dimensions. However, the cabinet is necessarily vertically elongated to accommodate the presser in its vertically oriented storage position.
The presser 10 comprises, generally, a pair of presser heads 14 and 16 for pressing therebetween articles of clothing and the like; an elongated support structure 18 which mounts the pair of heads 14 and 16; and a pair of links or suspension arms 20 and 22 which are pivotally secured to the support structure 18 and to the cabinet 12 for effecting the projection and withdrawal of the presser relative to the cabinet 12. The presser 10 also includes a latch 24 which is adapted to fix the relative positions of the arms 20 and 22 for maintaining the presser heads 14 and 16 in their operating or projected positions, as illustrated in FIG. 1.
The bottom wall of the cabinet 12 is raised above the supporting surface or floor to provide a hollow space 26 within which is located a steam generator 28, which will be described in connection with an explanation hereinafter of the operation of the presser 10.
The presser heads 14 and 16 are fabricated of relatively light-weight material, such as sheet metal, to provide ease of handling in swinging the presser 10 between its operating and storage positions. For this purpose, as best illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9, the upper presser head 14 includes an elongated, generally rectangular sheet metal pan or shell 32 having a peripheral, downwardly projecting flange 34 which terminates in an inwardly formed peripheral ledge or lip 36.
The configuration of the shell 32 defines a downwardly opening chamber 38 which is closed by a sheet metal presser pad plate 40 lying generally above the lower edges of the shell flange 34. However, the plate 40 includes a downwardly and outwardly curved portion or flange 42 extending below and outwardly of the edge of the flange 34.
The pad plate 40 is centrally recessed to provide a vacuum space 44, and a porous or previous pad 46 is fitted against the curved pad plate flange 42 in underlying relationship to the vacuum space. The pad 46 includes an integral resilient or elastic cord 48 located at the edge margin of the pad 46 and lying upon the upper side of the outwardly projecting portion of the flange 42 to secure the pad 46 in position upon the pad plate 40. The pad plate 40 is secured at its periphery to the peripheral lip 36 of the shell 32 by a plurality of rivets 50.
The plate 40 includes a centrally located opening for threadably receiving a vacuum fitting 51 to which is secured one end of a flexible hose or vacuum line 52 which passes out of the chamber 38 through a suitable opening provided in the shell flange 34. A usual and conventional on-off vacuum valve 54 is secured to the pad plate 48 within the hollow interior or chamber 38 of the upper head shell, and includes an operating element 56 which is actuable to establish a vacuum in the space 44.
An elongated lever arm 58 is provided for actuating the vacuum valve 54 and for this purpose is hinged at one end to a support fitting 60 which is fixed to the interior of the shell 32. The opposite extremity of the arm 58 includes a vacuum operating handle 62 which extends upwardly through an opening located in the shell 32 adjacent a presser handle 64. The handle 64 is secured to the shell 32 adjacent the operators position to provide a means for pivoting the presser head 14 downwardly against the presser head 16. The adjacent location of the handles 62 and 64 permits the operator to conveniently actuate either or both with one hand. Depression of the handle 62 pivots the lever arm 58 about the support fitting 60 and into engagement with the valve element 56 to depress the element 56 and open the vacuum line to the space 44.
The lower presser head 16 is constructed similar to the presser head 14 but is provided with a means for applying steam to the article to be pressed, rather than means for providing a vacuum. More particularly, the presser head 16 includes an elongated, generally rectangular sheet metal shell 66 having an upwardly oriented, peripheral flange 68 inwardly formed at its edge to provide a peripheral ledge or lip 70. The upwardly opening space or compartment '72 defined by the shell 66 is closed by a presser pad plate 74 characterized by a peripheral flange 76 which projects outwardly of the shell flange 68.
The plate 74 is downwardly stepped or dished to provide a central concavity or pressure vacuum space 78 underlying a steam pervious pad 80 disposed across the pressure pad plate 74. The pad 80 extends outwardly of the pad plate flange 76 and includes at its periphery an integral elastic cord 82 which underlies the flange 76 to secure the pad 88 in position upon the pad plate 74. The pressure pad plate 74 and the lower head shell 66 are secured together at the peripheral lip 70 and the peripheral flange 76, respectively, by a plurality of rivets 84.
An apertured steam fitting 86 is fixed within a central opening provided in the pad plate 74, and is connected to a steam line 88 to receive steam for discharge into the steam space 78 beneath the pad 80. The steam line 88 passes through a suitable opening provided in the shell 66 and, as will be seen, is connected to the steam generator 28 located in the cabinet 12.
The presser heads 14 and 16 are pivotally carried by the support structure 18, as best illustrated in FIGS. 7
4 through 9. For this purpose the structure 18 includes an elongated, hollow support arm 90 of substantially square cross-section which extends along the sides of the heads 16 and 18. One end of the arm 90 terminates inwardly of the adjacent outer extremities of the heads 14 and 16, while the other or inner end of the arm 20 extends beyond the inner ends of the heads.
The support arm 90 not only bears a major portion of the operating loads on the presser heads 14 and '16, but also houses an elongated tube 92 which pivotally mounts the heads. The tube 92 extends the full length of the arm 90 and is located in position within the arm 90 by a number of transverse plates 94 which are welded or otherwise secured to the interior of the arm 90. One of the plates 94 constitutes the outer end wall of the arm 90 and includes a semi-circular opening 95 which receives the outer end of the tube 92, the received end of the tube 92 being cut away to provide a complemental, semi-circular configuration so that the tube 92 is constrained against rotation relative to the arm 90.
The tube 92 serves as a pintle for two sets of hinge elements which hinge the upper presser head 14 for pivotal movement relative to the lower head 16. Each hinge set comprises a relatively stationary double hinge knuckle 96 and a single, intermediate hinge knuckle 98, both of which are pivotally carried by the tube 92. Each double hinge knuckle 96 includes a ledge or flange 100 at its free extremity which is rigidly secured, as by riveting or the like, to the underside of the lower head shell 66, as best illustrated in FIG. 9, the flanges 100 of the two sets of hinge elements being spaced apart along the length of the lower head 16 for proper support. Each of the single knuckles 98 also includes a flange 102 which overlies and is secured to the upper side of the upper head shell 14 by rivets or the like to thereby support the upper head 14.
A horizontally oriented support plate 104 welded to the underside of the arm 90 extends below the lower head shell 66, as best illustrated in FIG. 8, to provide additional support for the lower head 16, being secured thereto by means of bolts, rivets, or the like. This also fixes the position of the lower head 16 relative to the support structure 18.
As best viewed in FIGS. 7 and 9, the hinge knuckles 96 and 98 are preferably hollow struts formed or fabricated of metal plate to afford passages for the steam and vacuum lines 88 and 52, respectively. In this regard, slots or openings are also provided in the support tube 2 for this purpose, the slots being made large enough to accommodate some movement of the lines during relative pivotal movement of the heads 14 and 16.
The support structure 18 is pivotally connected to the outer extremities of the suspension arms 20 and 22, respectively, by a pair of studs 1616 and 108 carried by the support arm 90 and mounting usual securing nuts and washers, as will be apparent.
The suspension arm 20 is pivotally secured at its upper end to the interior face of a side wall of the upright cabinet 12 by a fitting 110, extends downwardly and outwardly of the cabinet 12 in an arcuate path, and is pivotally connected at its outer extremity to the stud 106. The arcuate configuration of the suspension arm 20 adapts the arm for complete enclosure within the cabinet 12 in the recessed position of the arm, as best illustrated in FIG. 3, and also adapts the arm for projection of the presser heads 14 and 16 into the operating position of FIG. 2 when the suspension arm 26 is swung outwardly.
The other or lower suspension arm 22 is pivotally secured at its inner end by a fitting 112 to the same side wall of the cabinet which supports the inner end of the arm 20, the pivotal connection of the. arm 22 being below the mounting for the arm 28 and at approximately the middle of the cabinet side wall at the operating height of the heads 14 and 16. An Lshaped bracket 114 is also secured at its ends to this same side wall of the cabinet 12, the portion of the bracket 114 between the ends being spaced from the side wall to provide an area through which the arm 22 can swing in its pivotal movement. An anti-torque plate 116 is secured to the arm 22 at the portion thereof lying within the narrow space afforded by the spacing of the bracket 114 from the cabinet side wall so that the arm 22 is constrained against twisting during its pivotal movement, the plate 116 tending to engage the inner face of the bracket 114 to prevent such twisting.
The latch 24 is provided to lock the support arm 90 and suspension arm 22 in their projected positions, the locking effect being provided by virtue of the weight of the projected heads 14 and 16. More particularly, the latch 24 includes a pin 118 connected to the support arm 90 and extending into the path of the arm 22, and also includes a notch or recess 120 provided in the underside of the arm 22 for receiving the pin 118 when the arms 20 and 22 are in their projected or outward positions, as best illustrated in FIG. 2. The pin 118 and recess 120 automatically separate to unlock the arms 90 and 22 when the presser heads 14 and 16 are tipped toward their upright positions.
The steam generator28 located in the space 26 at the bottom of the cabinet 12 is of any suitable type for generating steam, and includes water feed lines (not shown), heating means for raising the temperature of the incoming water (not shown), and a switch or foot pedal 122 for actuating the heating means and the feed water inlet valve. The pedal 122 can be stored within the cabinet 12 and is disposed outside the cabinet 12, as illustrated in FIG. 1, when the presser is to be used. The details of a suitable apparatus for this purpose will be apparent to those skilled in this art, and are therefore omitted for brevity. Liksewise, the vacuum unit for supplying the necessary vacuum in the upper head 14 is also omitted for brevity, and may be of any conventional type effective to provide a vacuum in the vacuum line 52.
The presser 10 is operated by opening a front door 124 of the cabinet 12, and pulling on the free or upper extremities of the heads 14 and 16 to pivot them downwardly. As will be apparent from an examination of FIGS. 2 and 3, the downward pivotal movement of the heads 14 and 16 is accompanied by an outward swinging of both the arms 20 and 22, the arm 21 supporting or suspending the heads during such movement and the arm 22 simultaneously moving the heads 14 and 16 into their horizontal operating positions. At the end of the outward pivotal or swinging movement of the heads, the pin 118 lodges within the recess 20 to lock the heads in their extended positions.
The foot pedal 122 is then placed in operating position, the presser head 14 opened to receive the article to be pressed, and the pedal 122 depressed to pass steam through the line 88 to the steam space 73. The steam passes from the space 78 upwardly through the pad 80, through the article to be pressed, and thence up into the pad 46 of the upper head 14. Depression of the vacuum handle 62 by the operator then causes a vacuum to be established in the vacuum space 44, and the steam and vapors in the article being pressed are drawn upwardly and out of the vacuum line 52 for discharge. Subsequent articles are pressed by merely grasping the handle 64 and raising the upper head 14 to remove and replace articles, as desired. The presser 10 is stored by urging the outer or free ends of the heads 14 and 16 upwardly, whereupon the latch 24 disengages and the presser moves into the position illustrated in FIG. 3. A pair of pins or stops 126 and 128 are fixed to the wall of the cabinet 12 adjacent the arms 20 and 22 for engagement therewith, as best illustrated in FIG. 3, to halt inward pivotal movement of the heads 14 and 16 when they have reached their vertical storage positions.
From the foregoing it is seen that the present invention provides a foldaway presser which is relatively light in weight and adapted for compact storage in a relatively shallow upright cabinet. The presser occupies compara- 6 tively little space and is easily operated by a housewife so that the advantages of steam pressing are made available to the average household. The sheet metal construction of the heads not only lowers the cost of the apparatus considerably, but also greatly facilitates the handling of the presser, as will be apparent.
Various modifications and changes may be made with regard to the foregoing detailed description without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles therebetween; elongated support means mounting said heads; an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said sup port means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclosure, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
and an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within said enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means adjacent said first suspension arm whereby said second suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical position upon inward swinging movement of said heads, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof.
2. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles therebetween;
elongated support means mounting said heads;
an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclosure, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within said enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means adjacent said first suspension arm whereby said second suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical position upon inward swinging movement of said heads, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof; and latch means for fixing the relative positions of said first suspension arm and said support means when said presser heads are in said horizontal position.
3. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles therebetween;
elongated support means mounting said heads;
an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the upper portion of a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means at a point spaced from one end of said support means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first. suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclosure, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the enclosure below said first suspension arm, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means whereby said second suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical posi tion upon inward swinging movement of said heads, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof;
and latch means for fixing the relative positions of said first suspension arm and said support means when said presser heads are in said horizontal position.
4. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles therebetween, each of said heads including a presser pad and each of said heads being fabricated of lightweight sheet material defining a space adjacent the associated one of said pads;
hollow, elongated support means mounting said heads;
an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement within said enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means adjacent said first suspension arm whereby said second suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical position upon inward swinging movement of said heads, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof;
a vacuum line adapted to be connected to a source of vacuum and extending through said support means and opening into said space in one of said heads;
and a steam line adapted to be connected to a source of steam and extending through said support means and opening into said space in the other of said heads whereby steam may be applied to and exhausted from an article disposed for pressing between said pair of heads.
5. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of hollow presser heads for pressing articles there'oetween;
a hollow, elongated support arm;
a hollow tube secured within said support arm;
hinge means pivotally mounting said heads to said tube;
an elongated fist suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the upper portion of a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support arm at a point spaced from one end of said support arm whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclosure, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the enclosure below said first suspension arm, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support arm between said one end thereof and the point of pivotal attachment of said first suspension arm to said support arm whereby said second suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical position upon inward swinging movement of said ends, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof;
a vacuum line adapted to be connected to a source of vacuum and extending through said hollow tube, through a portion of said hinge means, and into the hollow interior of one of said heads;
and a steam line adapted to be connected to a source of steam and extending through said hollow tube, through a portion of said hinge means, and into the hollow interior of the other of said heads whereby steam may be applied to and exhausted from an article disposed for pressing between said pair of eads.
6, A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles therebetween;
elongated suport means mounting said heads;
an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the upper portion of a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means at a point spaced from one end of said support means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclosure, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;
an elongated second suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the enclosure below said first suspension arm, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means between said one end thereof and the point of pivotal attachment of said first suspension arm to said support means whereby said sec ond suspension arm urges said heads toward said vertical position upon inward swinging movement of said heads, and urges said heads toward said horizontal position upon outward swinging movement thereof;
an elongated bracket adapted for securement at its extremities within said enclosure adjacent said second suspension arm, and spaced from said enclosure at its midportion to permit pivotal movement of said second suspension arm;
and a plate secured to said second suspension arm adapted for engagement with the inner face of said bracket upon twisting of said second suspension arm whereby said heads are constrained against lateral tipping during use.
7. A foldaway presser comprising:
a pair of presser heads for pressing articles theretween;
elongated support means mounting said heads;
an elongated first suspension arm having an inner extremity adapted for pivotal securement to the upper portion of a vertically elongated enclosure, and having an outer, swinging extremity pivotally connected to said support means at a point spaced from one end of said support means whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung inwardly with said first suspension arm to a vertical storage position inside the enclose, and whereby said heads may be pivoted on said swinging extremity and swung outwardly with said first suspension arm to a horizontal operating position outside the enclosure;

1. A FOLDAWAY PRESSER COMPRISING: A PAIR OF PRESSER HEADS FOR PRESSING ARTICLES THEREBETWEEN; ELONGATED SUPPORT MEANS MOUNTING SAID HEADS; AN ELONGATED FIRST SUSPENSION ARM HAVIANG AN INNER EXTREMITY ADAPTED FOR PIVOTAL SECUREMENT WITHIN A VERTICALLY ELONGATED ENCLOSURE, AND HAVING AN OUTER, SWINGIND EXTREMITY PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID SUPPORT MEANS WHEREBY SAID HEADS MAY BE PIVOTED ON SAID SWINGING EXTREMITY AND SWING INWARDLY WITH SAID FIRST SUSPENSIN ARM TO A VERTICAL STORAGE POSITION SIDE THE ENCLOSURE, AND WHEREBY SAID HEADS MAY BE PIVOTED ON SAID SWINGING EXTREMITY AND SWING OUTWARDLY WITH SAID FIRST SUSPENSIN ARM TO A HORIZONTAL OPERATING POSITION OUTSIDE THE ENCLOSURE; AND AN ELONGATED SECOND SUSPENSION ARM HAVING AN INNER EXTREMITY ADAPTED FOR PIVITOL SECUREMENT WITHIN SAID ENCLOSURE, AND HAVING AN OUTER, SWINGING EXTERMITY PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID SUPPORT MEANS ADJACENT SAID FIRST SUSPENSION ARM WHEREBY SAID SECOND SUSPENSIN ARM URGES SAID HEDS TOWARD SAID VERTICAL POSITION UPON INWARD SWINGING MOVEMENT OF SAID HEADS, AND URGES SAID HEADS TOWARD SAID HORIZONTAL POSITION UPON OUTWARD SWINGING MOVEMENT THEREOF.
