SMOKING ARTI OLE Filed April 24, 1964 INVENTOR 5:7? 776! N (f/0.1.57
WSM QM ATTORNEY United States Patent O 3,283,763 SMOKING ARTICLE Bertram Cholet, 252 Harrison Ave., Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. Filed Apr. 24, 1964, Ser. No. 362,224 3 Claims. (Cl. 131-182) This invention relates to smoking articles and, in particular to such articles having the general construction of a smoking pipe.
One of the distinguishing features of cigarettes is that they are purchased prefilled with tobacco and are disposable while pipes are used repeatedly by refilling permanent bowls with tobacco after intervals of smoking. The instant invention contemplates a pipe-like construction having disposable and prefilled tobacco containers fabricated of paper, plastic, metal, wood, clay or corn cob. The construction of the holder for the container is such as to permit of its frontal ejection after smoking, a finger operated stem ejector being used for this purpose. After ejection the container is discarded in the manner of cigarettes. The lower portion of the bowl contains a filter. To facilitate insertion and ejection the holder is designed to retain the container merely by a friction grip and in such a manner as to press radially inwardly thereon above the filter section thereof which is compacted. It is recognized then that the smoking article is akin to a cigarette in usage even though having the general appearance of a pipe. The stem and holder serve functionally as a cigarette holder and to protect the smoker from coming into direct contact with the hot tobacco container which is disposable as in the case of a cigarette.
One object of the invention is to provide a new and improved smoking article which is comparatively safe for the smoker to use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a smoking article having a general pipe-like appearance and a filter adapted to remove possible cancer causing chemicals.
A further object of the invention is to provide a unique smoking article having a disposable tobacco retainer in a holder therefor especially designed to facilitate replacement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention may be appreciated on reading the following detailed description of one embodiment thereof which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the smoking article;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the bowl holder and stem with the bowl removed.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the bowl with parts broken away.
Referring to the drawings the smoking article 6 has a stem 8 and a tobacco and filter section 10. The stem 8 is of integral structure and apertured throughout its length to provide smoke channel 16.
The section 10 comprises a container 18 and holder having a central cavity 19 in communication With chan- 3,283,763 Patented Nov. 8, 1966 nel 16 in the stem. The holder has an annular rim 22 and an upstanding flange having a front opening and an inwardly directed bead 24 extending for less than a full circle above the rim as shown in FIG. 4. The container 18 is cylindrical and preferably made of paper like a squat cigarette but may be of metal, plastic, clay, wood, or corn cob and is thinly grooved at a in its lower portion which contains a compacted filter layer 30. The cylindrical container is retained by means of the flange 24 entering the grooved portion of the cylinder which is held therein by friction grip. Slide ejector 32 is slidably retained on the stern by means of strap 34 and may extend through a slit in the rear of the flange 24 for the purpose of ejecting the container. The ejector 32 has a roughened finger engaging portion at one end and a depending bowl contacting element at the other end. Due to the fact that the bowl is retained solely by friction the ejector may easily dislodge it manually from the holder. The article is assembled by placing the container on the front portion of the rim 22 and sliding it rearwardly until it is fully supported by the rim for 360 and the bead 24 is received in the groove a of the container. The container is removed by pushing the ejector 32 in the forward direction until it is entirely free of the holder and can be lifted off the front portion of the rim 22.
Various modifications of the invention may be effected by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope and principle of invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A smoking article comprising a hollow stem, a holder in communication with said stem, said holder having an annular rim, a central cavity below said rim and a flange extending upwardly from said rim. and having a frontal opening, and said holder being adapted to receive a tobacco filled container through said frontal opening in a direction transversely of the longitudinal aXis of said container.
2. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein said flange is inwardly headed and an annular groove is provided in said container to receive the bead for retention in the holder.
3. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein said flange is apertured in its rear portion and an ejector for dislodging said container is slidably mounted on said stern and movable into the holder through the aperture in said flange.
