Description
(No Model.) A
W. M. BUSHFIELD.
REGISTERING APPARATUS.
Patented Sept. 29, 1885.
7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM M. BUSHFIELD, OF TORONTO, OHIO.
REGISTERING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,134, dated September 29, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM MBUsI-IEIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ronto, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Registering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a registering apparatus adapted to be applied to boxes for containing boots and shoes; and it has for its objeet to provide improved means whereby the difierent sizes of shoes in the box, the number of pairs of each size, and the qualityas, for instance, goat, pebble-goat, calf, &c.will be indicated outside the box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a registering apparatus of the character described which shall be simple in its construction, and one that may be easily opera-ted and manufactured, and supplied at a slight cost. \Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and detailed arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a registering apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the front plate removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line no a; of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the cover of an ordinary pasteboard shoe-box, in which is provided a centrally-located opening, a. I11 this opening a is located a headed pin, 1), carrying on its inner end a disk, B, having at intervals on its face, near the peripheral edge thereof, slips 0, which have printed thereon the different qualities of the shoessuch as Calf, Pebble-Goat, 850. If desired, however, the said distinguishing-terms might be printed directly on the disk.
A slot or opening, 0, is provided near the centrally-located opening a, and the disk B may be turned by means of the headed pin 1) to bring any one of the slips 0 on a line with said opening. If the shoes contained in the box are of the quality known as calf, the headed pin Z) is turned so as to bring the slip having Calf thereon on aline with the slit or opening O, thus showing at a glance the kind of shoes within the box, and as said disk has a series of such slips marked to denote different qualities it will thus be observed that said box may be used for all the different qualities of shoes manufactured.
The cover A is provided with a series of. radially-arranged elongated slots, D, the inner ends of which are located at equal distances from the central opening, a, and in each of these radially-arranged slots D is a headpin, E, which work in said slots, and upon the inner ends of the headed pins are secured slides F. Each of the slides F is provided with numbers to designate the size of a shoe. One of the slides will be marked with a series of three 2s, one above the other, and at the lower end of the slide will be a O. The next slide on the left will be marked with the figure 2;, and the next 3, and so on around the se ries, the last one in this case being 7. Each of the slides is provided at its inner end with the character 0, (naught) On a line with each of the elongated slots D, a slight distance from the outer ends thereof, is provided a hole or opening, 0, with which the characters on the slide are adapted to register.
Upon the under side of the cover is arranged a back strip, F, to hold the several slides and disk in place, and between each of the slides is arranged a strip, G, thus forming guides for said slides and preventing their lateral movement or displacement.
The register before described is operated as follows: The centrally-located disk is turned to expose to view the slip showing the quality of goods contained in the box, and each box in this case is supposed to contain three pairs of shoes of each of the different sizes.
The headed pins E are all moved to the inner ends of the elongated slots I), thus showing that the box is full, and contains three pairs of shoes of the several sizes shown on the slides. If a pair of 2s is sold, the slide corresponding to the same moved up one space, thus exposing the second 2 on the slide, and showing at a glance that one pair has been sold or otherwise disposed of. Should the other two pairs of the size 2 be sold, the slide is moved two spaces, thus exposing the character 0, and showing that all of the shoes of the size mentioned have been disposed of.
By the use of the abovedescribed register the necessity of searching through a box or boxes for a desired size is obviated, the register showing at a glance whether or not such size is in stock.
It will be obvious that it is not essential that the register should be applied to the cover of a box, or that the exact arrangement shown and described be strictly observed, as many slight changes in construction and arrange ment of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shoebox, the combination, with a box, of a series of slides having characters thereon denoting the different sizes contained in the box, and a revoluble disk having marked thereon the quality of the shoes, as explained, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a box having a series of elongated slots, of a series of slides having characters denoting the different sizes contained in the box, headed pins secured to said slides, openings for exposing the different char acters, and a disk having a headed pin for turning the same, said box having a slot to expose the characters on said disk, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with the top A, having a series of radially-arranged slots,D, and aseries of openings, 6, arranged beyond the series of slots, a revoluble disk, B, a series of radially-arranged slides carrying headed pins adapted to work in the slots D,and guides G, arranged between the slides, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIAM M. BUSHFIELD.
