United States Patent 3,270,694 COMBINATION ASH AND BEVERAGE TRAY FOR CARD TABLES Hampton K. Wallace and Adele B. Wallace, both of 124 Fitzgerald Drive, Travis AFB, Calif. Filed Jan. 12, 1965, Ser. No. 424,953 Claims. (Cl. 108-26) This invention relates to a combination ash and beverage tray for card tables, and has as its primary object the provision of an improved device of this character which may be attached to the edge of the table, in substantially flush relation therewith, thus leaving more playing surface on the table.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a device of this nature which may be readily attached to and detached from the card table as desired.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a device with ample provision for the holding of a glass or bottle as desired, and with space for the location of a removable ash tray.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of a card table, showing a plurality of ash and beverage trays attached thereto at appropriate locations, two forms of the invention being disclosed;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through a card table adjacent the leg thereof and showing one form of the device constructed in accordance with the instant invention in section and attached to the card table;
FIGURE 3 is a bottom plan view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2 showing a Iconstructional detail;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of FIGURE 2 showing a further con-structional detail; and
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 55 of FIGURE 2 showing a further constructional detail.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawings in detail there is generally indicated at T a conventional card table, of any desired configuration, having a depending edge E extending around the periphery thereof and the usual folding legs L pivoted as at P and provided with the conventional split braces B. The device of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10, and comprises a receptacle 11 having a recess at one end adapted for the reception of a removable ash tray 12, and including a circular opening 13 at its opposite end for the reception of a glass, a beer or soft drink bottle, or the like. The recess 13 has a raised protuberance 14 at its bottom to prevent frosting of the glass.
On the underside of the receptacle at any desired location there is positioned a plate 15, having an elongated longitudinally extending slot 16 therein and an upturned flange 17 at one edge. A bolt or screw 18 extends through the bottom 19 of receptacle 11, at any desired "ice location adjacent the edge thereof, and is provided with a wing nut 20, the boltextending through the slot 16. The arrangement is thus such that the plate 15 may be suitably adjusted longitudinally till the flange 17 grasps the inner side E of the edge E of table T, and the device then clamped in position with the edge E extending between the flange 17 and the side wall 11 of the receptacle.
A pair of depending lugs 25 are riveted as by means of rivets 26 to the underside of receptacle 11 at a point outwardly of screw 18, .and have pivotally secured therebetween one end of a link 26, as by means of a pivot pin 27.
The other end of link 26 is provided with a longitudinally extending elongated open-ended slot 28 which fits over a bolt 29 provided with a wing nut 30. The bolt 29 extends through suitable apertures in a pair of lugs 31, which extend outwardly from the rear wall of the spring clip 32, the rear wall or bight thereof being indicated at 33, and the arms being indicated at 34. The ends of the arms are turned inwardly as at 35 to provide a resilient clamp for the leg L of the table, and the device may be provided with a frictional lining 36 of rubber or the like.
In the use and operation of the device the plate 16 is clamped in the manner previously described about the edge E of the table, and the spring clamp 32 suitably fitted about the adjacent leg L of the table. The brace or link 26 is then adjusted by means of slot 28, and the wing nut 30 is tightened to securely hold the parts in related assembly. When it is desire-d to remove the device from the table, wing nuts 20 and 30 may be loosened, and the entire assembly removed with the exception of the spring clip 32. If desired the clip may also be removed simply by slipping it off the side of the leg with which it is associated.
In FIGURE 1 there is generally indicated at 40 a modified form of tray which is generally in the form of a right angle receptacle 41 adapted to be positioned on the corner C of the table. In this form of the invention a pair of glass-containing recesses 42 are provided, and a single removable triangular ash tray 43. A single plate such as 16 may extend from the underside of each of receptacles 42, or from only one of them, and one or two links 26 and spring clips 32 may be provided as desired.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved combination ash and beverage tray for card tables which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:
1. A combination ash and beverage tray for card tables, comprising a receptacle, a plate having an upturned end secure-d to the underside of said receptacle, adapted to engage the underside of the depending edge of a card table, a link pivoted at one end to the underside of said receptacle, a clamp adapted to engage the leg of a card table, and means pivotally connecting the other end of said link to said clamp.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said plate has a slot therein, and a set screw extends through said slot adjustably securing said plate to the underside of said receptacle.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein said clamp in clu-des a pair of apertured lugs between which said other end of said link is positioned, said other end of said link having an open-ended slot therein, and a pivot bolt extending through the apertures in the lugs and the slot comprises means for detachably pivotally securing said other end of said link to said clamp.
4. The structure of claim 1 wherein said clamp is a split resilient sleeve.
5 The structure of claim 1 wherein said receptacle in- 4 cludes a compartment for holding a beverage container and a second compartment for holding a removable ash tray.
