END WALL ARRANGEMENT FOR SEAL END CARTON Filed March 18, 1964 .f raz/672.2157@ www@ United States Patent O 3,261,534 END WALL ARRANGEMENT FOR SEAL END CARTGN I Francis A. Chidsey, Jr., Devon, Pa., assigner to Container Corporation of America, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Delaware Filed Mar. 18, 1964, Ser. No. 352,781 6 Claims. (Cl. 229-31) This invention relates to folding cartons, and more particularly to the end wall construction of a carton.
The invention comprehends an improved arrangement for the end wall of a carton having cover and tray portions with overlapped, interconnected flaps forming the end wall of the carton.
One of the problems normally encountered in forming a seal end carton is that of maintaining an effective seal between an outer ap and the intermediate and inner flaps of the end walls, because the intermediate flaps act as spacers which prevent full surface contact between opposing surfaces of the inner and outer flaps.
It is therefore on object of this invention to provide, in a seal end carton, a means 1for maintaining a portion of the end wall inner flap outer surface in co-planar relationship with the outer surfaces of the intermediate flaps and the inner surface of the outer flap to insure a uniform adhesive bond between ila-ps.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide, in a carton of the type described, an inner flap hinged to the bottom wall `of the carton along a hinge line the central portion of which is deflected outwardly to cause the central portion of the inner flap to bow outwardly so that its outer surface will be ico-planar with the outer surfaces of the intermediate flaps of the carton end wall.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from an examination of the following description and drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view-of a folding carton embodying features of the invention, with portions of the structure broken away;
FIGURE 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton of FIGURE l may be formed; and
FIGURES 4, 5 and 6 are views corresponding to FIG- URES l, 2 and 3, respectively, but which illustrate a modified form of the invention.
It will be understood that, for purposes of clarity, certain elements have been intentionally omitted from certain views where they are illustrated to better advantage in other views.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of the invention, it will be seen that the carton or container, indicated generally at C, shown in FIGURE l of the drawing includes integral tray and cover or lid portions T and L, respectively, which may be formed from the single blank B of foldable paperboard illustrated in FIGURE 3.
The tray portion of the container includes a generally rectangular bottom wall having lopposed front and rear side wall panels 12 and 14, respectively, hinged to and upstanding from the front and rear side edges thereof and having end walls 16 hinged to and upstanding from the end edges thereof.
Each end wall 16 includes an inner flap 20 hinged to the related end edge of bottom wall panel 10 along a hinge line 40, and a pair of intermediate ilaps 22 hinged to the related end edges of the front and rear side wall pane- ls 12 and 14. Intermediate flaps 22 may be formed as a double gusset or bellows comprising a pair of triangular flaps 22a 'and 22b hinged to the related side wall and inner ilap, respectively, and hinged to each "ice other along a diagonal fold line extending from the corner of bottoni wall panel 10 to the related corner of the blank.
The cover or lid portion of the tray includes a generally rectangular top wall panel 30 hinged at its rear edge to the upper edge of rear side wall 14 and having hingedly attached to and depending from its front side edge and end edges a front panel 32 and a pair of end panels 34 adapted to overlie and be adhesively secured to the front side wall 12 and the end walls 16, respectively, of the tray portion of a container.
As best seen in FIGURE 3, each hinge line 40, on which each end wall inner flap 20 is attached to the related edge of bottom wall panel 10, includes marginal or end sections 42 which converge outwardly from bottom wall panel 10 and la center or medial sec-tion 40 which is deflected outwardly a slight distance toward the free outer edge of inner flap 20. The purpose of this icontoured hinge line is to cause the center portion 48 of inner ap 20 to bow outwardly from the end or marginal portions 46 of :the inne-r flap so that it will present an outer surface which is Ico-planar with the outer surfaces of intermediate flaps 22 and the inner surface of panel 34, as illustrated in FIGURE 2 of the drawing.
In Iconventional carton construction it will be understood that the intermediate ilaps actas spacers which prevent the outer surface of each inner flap 20 from coming into complete full-face engagement with the related adjacent portion of the inner surface of top wall end panel 34, which is in reality an outer flap of the container end wall when the container is in erected, sealed condition.
Thus, as best seen in FIGURES 2 and 3, by virtue of the novel hinge line arrangement ffor the carton inner flap its glue area 50 is `co-planar with the glue areas 52 of the intermediate flaps to form a more complete and uniform glue surface for attachment to the inner surface of cover top wall panel 34.
Referring now to FIGURES 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing, which illustrate a slightly modified form of the invention, it wil-l be seen that all of the portions of this embodiment have been designated by numerals similar to those used to designate corresponding portions of the first embodiment.
The only difference between the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGURE 4 is that the tray portion end wall intermediate flaps 22 are single flaps hinged only to the front and rear side walls of the tray, and are generally rectangular in shape having no hinge attachment to end wall inner flap 20.
In this embodiment each inner flap 16 is also hinged to the related end edge of bottom wall panel 10 along an outwardly deflected score line which causes the central portion of inner flap 20 to bow outwardly and present an outer surface which is substantially co-planar with the outer surfaces of intermediate flaps 22 and the inner surface of flap 34 in the same manner as that of the previously described embodiment.
Thus, it will be understood that by means of the novel contoured hinge line attaching the inner end wall flaps to the bottom wall of the carton it is now possible to achieve a more complete and uniform sealing arrangement for the end walls of the carton.
