Description
May 12, 964 P. COHEN ETAL 3 DISPENSER FOR WRAPPING MATERIALS AND PACKAGE Filed March 21, 1962 INVENTORS Poul Cohen Curfis Pearl BY Jack W. Schwartz United States Patent 3,132,784 DISPENSER FOR WRAPPING MATERIALS AND PACKAGE Paul Cohen, Harrison, and Jack W. Schwartz, New York, N.Y., and Curtis Pearl, West Englewood, N.J., assignors to W. Ralston & Co., New Rochelle, N.Y.
Filed Mar. 21, 1962, Ser. No. 181,315 7 Claims. (Cl. 225-37) This invention relates to wrappings and related materials and dispensers therefor, and more in particular to a unitary assembly of rolls of gift wrappings together with tape and ribbon for use therewith.
.An object of this invention is to provide a compact and sturdy package for wrappings and the like. A further object is to provide an assembly of rolls of sheet material wherein the materials may be readily dispensed. A further object is to provide a unitary assembly of wrapping materials, including sheet material, tape, ribbons and the like. A further object is to provide a secure mounting for rolls of sheet materials so that the sheets may be dispensed and severed easily. A further object is to provide improved structures of the above character. These and other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out below.
Referring to the drawings wherein one embodiment is disclosed:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an assembly of three rolls of gift wrappings in a dispensing package;
FIGURE 2 is an elevation of the device of FIGURE 1 with parts removed and broken away; and
FIGURES 3, 4 and are respectively views on the lines 33, 44 and 5-5 of FIGURE 2.
Referring to FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings, a package unit 2 is formed by a pair of end brackets 4 and 6 interconnected by three paper tubes 8, 10 and 12 having their ends telescoped onto sleeves 5 and 7 integral with the brackets. This assembly is held together by a nylon cord 14 which has a loop at one end by which it is anchored upon post 16 on bracket 4, and the other end is anchored to a post 18 on bracket 6. Hence, cord 14 extends as follows: From post 16 (FIGURE 3) on bracket 4 through a slot 20 to a slot 22 in bracket 6; along one edge of bracket 6 (FIGURE 4) to a slot 24, back to bracket 4 and through a slot 26; along the edge of bracket 4 to a slot 28; and back to bracket 6 and through a slot 30 to post 18.
Each of sleeves 5 and 7 has on its outer surface a pair of oppositely positioned, longitudinal ribs 9 and 11, respectively, which are tapered radially outwardly from the ends of the sleeves. These ribs are pressed into the inner surfaces of the ends of tubes 8, 10 and 12 and insure a fixed relationship between the tubes and the brackets.
Rotatably mounted upon sleeves 8, 10 and 12 are three rolls 32, 34, and 36 of gift wrapping paper or sheets which may be unrolled individually as represented in FIG- URE 1. The sheet which is unrolled in this manner is readily cut by drawing it against the adjacent run of the nylon cord 14 which is a very efiicient cutting element. Cord 14 also holds brackets 4 and 6 together with a resilient action which insures that tubes 8, 10 and 12 will be held firmly in telescoping relationship with sleeves 5 and 7. Sleeves 5 and 7 provide stationary journals for the rolls of paper.
3,132,784 Patented May 12, 1964 Brackets 4 and 6 are triangular and each has a base which is slightly longer than the other two sides and there is a peripheral flange. Mounted at the center of the outer wall of bracket 6 (see FIGURES 2 and 4) upon a fixed hub 38 is a roll 40 of ribbon which is held in place by a removable sleeve with a flange 42 and telescoped into hub 38. Flange 42 is rectangular at the bottom with a bottom edge snugly resting on the flange of bracket 6 so as to prevent rotation of the flange and sleeve. Flange 42 has a rectangular opening at the top through which the ribbon from roll 40 unwinds, and the ribbon may be cut by drawing it into a slot 44 against a fixed knife 46. Referring now to FIGURE 3, a roll of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape 50 is similarly mounted upon the outer wall of bracket 4 by a hub 48 and a flanged sleeve 52. The tape from roll 50 is severed by drawing it through a slot 54 and cutting it upon a serrated edge 56.
Unit 2 is a compact package of the three rolls of sheet material and ribbon and tape for use therewith. The rolls of paper, ribbon and tape are all protected from damage and yet may be examined by the prospective purchaser. The transverse runs of the nylon cord provide some protection for the rolls and the unit may be wrapped readily when that is desirable. The invention contemplates that the entire unit of FIGURE 1 will be sold with rolls 8, 10 and 12 being three different styles or types of wrapping material. However, these rolls may be changed by loosening cord 14 and removing one of the end brackets 4 or 6 and then reassembling the unit with the desired new rolls. Undersome circumstances unit 2 is sold as a throw-away package which is discarded when the Wrapping materials have been used. With such an arrangement the nylon cord is shrunk after assembly so that the runs are extremely taut. This improves the cutting action and insures against the assembly coming apart.
As various embodiments may be made of the above invention and as changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that the matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is tobe interpreted illustratively and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:
1. A dispensing package of sheet materials comprising a structure formed by a central tube means and a pair of end brackets having sleeves telescoped respectively into the ends of said tube means, a cord tightly drawn and tensioned between said end bracket and providing a cutting edge, and sheet material in roll form rotatably mounted on said tube means, said tube means providing the sole rigid connection between said brackets and said cord holding said brackets in fixed position upon said tube means.
2. A package as described in claim 1 wherein said end brackets are generally triangular and said tube means is in the form of three independently mounted tubes, and wherein said sheet material comprises three rolls of wrapping material journaled respectively upon said tubes.
3. A package as described in claim 2 wherein each of said brackets is formed by an end Wall and an outwardly disposed peripheral flange, and means for rotatably supporting a roll of strip material upon the end wall and for severing the strip material.
4. A package as descrilbed in claim 3 wherein said mounting means is a stationary hub and removable sleeve and wherein said means for severing is a stationary cutter mounted upon said flange adjacent the bottom of a slot in said flange.
5. The package as described in claim 2 wherein said cord is a nylon cord having one end anchored to each of said brackets and including three runs stretched be tween said brackets.
6. A dispenser for rolls of sheet material comprising a plurality of tubes positioned in parallel relationship, a pair of brackets positioned at the opposite ends of said tubes and having integral sleeves telescoped into the respective ends of said tubes, and a tensioned cord holding said brackets together and providing a plurality of runs therebetween which act as cutting edges for the sheet material.
7. A dispenser as described in claim 6 wherein each of said sleeves have external tapered ribs which prevent said tubes from rotating.
