No. 225,197 4 Claims. (Cl. 20o-45.2)
This invention relates to a display box of the type which is the subject of my Patent No. 2,504,942.
The above mentioned patent comprises separate body and cover members, a support member and a hinge member assembled for the display box. The hinge member is of paper or cloth which is secured to the support member in order to provide a point of connection for such hinge. Thus there is required four dilferent parts to be secured together in the formation of this box.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a hinge and what heretofore was a support for the hinge all in one piece so that it will be unnecessary to attach the hinge to the supporting part in the assembly of the finished unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cardboard hinge by scoring of the cardboard which provides a stronger hinge than heretofore.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
FIG. l is a perspective view of the display box in open position;
FIG. 2 is a perspective View of the box in closed position;
FIG. 3 is an exploded view illustrating the three parts which go to make up the construction;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view substantially centrally through the box as shown in FIG. l;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view of a fragmental portion of the box in a closed position and on a somewhat larger scale; and
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the hinge and support member before being folded into position on the dotted lines shown therein.
In the formation of display boxes, it is desirable that the contents of the box be supported at an angle to the table or shelf upon which the construction is resting in order that the contents of the box may be better displayed and displayed in a more attractive manner, and in order to accomplish this, a support member may be provided which is secured to one part of the box so that the other part of the box may be inclined at the angle desired, and I provide the support member and a hinge for attaching it to one part of the box all in one piece and fold the construction suitably to provide the desired shaping of the construction.
With reference to the drawings, the body member of the box is designated generally 10 and the cover member 11. The body member has a bottom wall 12 with pairs of opposite side walls upstanding therefrom, thus one pair of upstanding side walls 13, 13 and the other pair of upstanding side walls 14 and 14. These side walls are in rectangular relation providing a fence-like enclosure and also are at right angles to the bottom Wall 12. The cover member has a top Wall 15 and depending pairs of opposite side walls 16, 16 and 17, 17. These side walls are also in the shape of a fence-like enclosure at right angles to each other and at right angles to the top wall 15.
A combined support member and hinge is designated generally 18 and comprises a blank scored as at 19 and 20 so as to provide a section 21 hingedly related to a section 22 and again hingedly related to a section 23, all between the score lines and the opposite edges of the blank while tabs 24 are located at either end of the section 22 and are connected to the section 22 by means of score lines 25 providing a point of hinging relation. The section 21 of this combined member is secured to the bottom wall 12 of the body member of the box such as by staples 25 (FIG. 5) While the section 22 of this member is doubled back on section 21 along the score line 19 (see FIG. 5) and extends beyond the end of the upstanding wall 14 of the body member. The section 23 is folded at the score line 20 so as to extend upwardly along the back depending Wall 16 of the cover and is suitably secured thereto either by some adhesive such as glue or cement or by stapling, the latter being available when certain covering is placed over the cover member. The tabs 24 are secured to the opposite sides 17 and 17 of the cover member also by means similar to the securing of the section 23 to the wall 16 of the opposite depending walls of the cover.
In some cases a sheet of stock 26 may be secured from the end of the hinge 19 along the bottom Wall 12 so as to extend outwardly beyond the upstanding opposite Walls so as to limit the amount that the cover may telescope over the opposite walls of the body member, this being desirable because of the shallowness of the opposite Walls of the body member as compared to the deeper depending walls of the cover member. By the above arrangement the assembly of the box is much simplified and may be assembled much faster than the box of the patent above first mentioned.
I claim:
l. In a box, a body member having a bottom wall and upstanding pairs of opposite side walls arranged in rectangular relation, a cover member having a top Wall and depending pairs of opposite side walls arranged in rectangular relation and of a size so that the side walls of the cover member telescope over the side walls of the body member, and a hinge of relatively stiff cardboard secured to the bottom Wall in face to face relation and scored to provide a hinge line, thence doubled back on itself along said line and projecting beyond said body member when in closed position with a rst portion extending at right angles to the doubled back portion and along one of the side walls of the cover member and secured in position in face to face relation with said side wall, whereby the doubled back portion serves as a support for the body to incline it to a horizontally supported surface when the cover member is moved to a position vertical to said supporting surface.
2. In a box as in claim l wherein said hinge is scored at its junction between the doubled back portion and lirst portion which extends in face to face contact with the side wall of the cover.
3. In a box, a body member having a bottom wall and upstanding pairs of opposite side walls arranged in rectangular relation, a cover member having a top wall and depending pairs of opposite side Walls arranged in rectangular relation and of a size so that the side walls of the cover member telescope over the side walls of the body member, and a hinge secured to the bottom wall thence doubled back on itself with a first portion extending at right angles to the doubled back portion along one of the side walls of the cover member and secured in position in face to face relation with said side wall, said hinge being of cardboard and scored to provide a hinge line where doubled back on itself and also scored at its junction between the doubled back portion and rst portion which extends in face to face contact with the side wall of the cover and tabs at the ends of one of said por- 10 4 tions extending along and secured to the side walls adjoining at right angles to the side wall to which the rst portion is secured.
4. A box as in claim 1 wherein the tabs are on the 5 doubled back portion.
