To MZ whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADAM H. HATMAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iuka, in the county of Marion and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac-v companyingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.Y

The invention belongs to that class of gates particularly adapted for fences crossing roads, which may, by means of proper mechanism, be opened or closed at some distance from the fence by a person on horseback or in a carriage. The gate not being hinged, it is counterbalanced and its bottom kept in proper position by fixing to its rear end, near the bottom, a long rectangular box containing the proper weight for the purpose, the said box sliding easily backward as the. gate moves back upon rollers journaled in any suitable contrivance situated below the box.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention with the gate closed. Fig. 2is asectional view of the weightbox and rollers supporting the same. Fig. 3 is'a side view of the invention with the gate open, and shown closed in dotted lines.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the gate, provided on its front end with the fixed latch a, which stands at right angles to the same and enters,when the gate is shut, a proper keeper on the latch-post B.

C is a post rising vertically to a considerable height and situated at the meeting-point of the rear end of the gate and the fence D,of which d is theV post next to the rear of G. The post (l has rmly secured to it, near its top, the horizontal beam c, the ends of which extend on each side to an equal distance from the post, and may, if necessary, be stayed on each side, as shown.

c c are two or more rings or loops of metal or other suitable material, secured vertically above each other to the rear surface of the post C, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned.

near the bottom of the front end of the saine, and extending backwardand upward to apoint slightly to the rear of the gate when it meets, and pivots with the front end of the lever c, the rear end of which pivots on the post d of the fence at a point equal in height to the meeting-point of the levers.

e is a lever pivoted to the lever e at a point near the post d, and running thence forward and downward is pivoted by its lower end to the lower end of the movable vertical rod F, which slides easily .in the rings c c of the post C, and the lower end of which, when the v gate is closed, rests upon the ground.

fis a transverse slot or other proper opening cut from side to side in the rod F a short distance below the level of the horizontal beam c, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned.

G G are two long arms, pivoted in the opposite ends of the beam c, each with its inner end resting in the slot f, and its outer end, which extends to a considerable distance beyond the pivot-point, provided with the rigid depending arm g, having at its lower end the hand-hold g.

H is the long rectangular box, ixed at and extending horizontally backward from the bot tom of the rear end 'of the gate. The said box is covered over, and has its interior divided into any desired number ot' chambers, h lz, in which proper weights for the desired purpose are placed. The object of this box is to counterbalance the weight of the gate, to which it is rigidly secured, and thus prevent the said gate from sagging down at its forward end. By thus counterbalancing the weight of the gate I obviate'the necessity of providing supports therefor across and on the bed of the roadway.

I is a rectangular frame, situated immediately below the box H, and provided with any proper number of bearings for the journals of the transverse rollers J, on which the box H freely slides. The circumferences of the said rollers lie slightly below the level of the upper edges of the sides of the frame I, so that when the box is in its place the said sides, which :tit loosely against the sides of the box, form guides for the same.

K is a guide-postfor the gate in its backward movement and a' stop for the forward movement of the box H. The said poststands IOO vertically from the front end of the frame I, and has its upper end above the gate connected by a stay to the post C with just sufficient space between the guide-post and post C for the gate to pass freely.

The operation of theinvention is as follows: Upon pulling down the rigid rod g (bymeans of its handheld) on one side of the gate, the vertical rod F is raised by means of the pivoted arm G on the same side. The latter acting through the lever e', pivoted to its lower end, raises the front end of the lever e and the rear end of the lever E, and the gate is consequently slid back, the counterbalancing-box H sliding backward on the rollers J. Upon passing the gate the rigid rod g on that side is pushed up,the rod F consequently depressed, the action of the levers reversed, and the gate again closes.

l. The combination ofthe gate, a frame, I, extended rearwardly from the gateway and provided with rollers J, and a counterbalan'cing device attached t0 the rear part of the gate and supported and movable on the rollers J. substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the sliding gate A, opened and closed by proper actuating mechanisnl, the weighted counterbalancing-box H, attached to the rear part of the gate, frame I, and rollers J J, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
