SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,169, dated February 10, 1885.
Application filed April 18, 1684. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GoTTLrEB SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Fans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is apartial side elevation and partial vertical section of a fly-fan embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of a portion thereof, part of the same being in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a detached part. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in line 0c 00, Fig. 3.

My invention consists of certain improvements in automatic fans, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box or casing, within which is mounted clockwork, the power of the spring whereof is transmitted to a fan-shaft, B, the fan-blades attached to said shaft being of suitable construction.
0 represents a pinion, which is mounted on the frame of the clock and connected with a post, 0, whereby said clock -work may be wound in an easy manner.
D represents a brake, consisting of a piece, D, of sheet metal, curved at one end to embrace a drum, 1). or one of the wheels ot the clock-work, and then bent around a roller, E, which is journaled in the frame-work A, the other end, a, of the brake having eonnected with it a screw, F, which engages with a stationary nut, G, attached to the framework, and has a button or knob, H, for convenience-of rotating the screw. It will be seen that when the screw F is rotated in one direction the end 0 of the brake is drawn outwardly, whereby as the piece moves around the roller E the curved end of said piece is tightened against the drum b, thus stopping the motion of the train of clock-work or gearing, and consequently of the fan. By rotating thescrew in the opposite direction the curved end of the brake is relieved and the drum 2) released, whereby the fan may rotate,
it being evident that the speed of rotation of the fan may be adjusted by properly operating the screw. The box A may be set on a table, in which case the fan-shaft occupies an upright position. In order to permit the fan to be sustained overhead-such as on the head-board of a bedstead, back of a chair, &c.-the side of the box has secured to it an eye. J, which receives thebent end d of a rod or bar, K, the latter being passed through an eye, L, on a block, M, said eye L having a screw, N, whereby when the rod K is raised or lowered it may be securely held,and the fan thus retained in its vertically-adjusted position. A screw-bolt, P, is passed through the block M and aheadboard, chair-back, 850., and fitted to a clamping-bar, Q. the end of the bolt carrying a thumb-nut, R, for tightening purposes. The block M and bar Q are located on opposite sides of the head-board of a bedstead or back of a chair, so that the tightened nut R- causes the block M to be firmly clamped to said head-board or back, thus reliably sustaining the fan. The block M may be a fixture of a bed or chair, in which case it may be secured by a screw, f. WVhen the fan is to be disconnected, the screw N is loosened and the rod K withdrawn from the eye L. The screw-bolt P is then removed, and the block M is thus released, excepting when the screw f is employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an automatic fan, clockwork in combination with a brake, consisting of the piece or strap D, the roller or bearing. E, and the screw F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an automatic fan, clock-work in combination with the fan-shaft B. the box A, having eye J, adjustable bar K, having a block, M, attached thereto. the block Q, and a screw or bolt, all of said parts being combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
