4 Qlaians. (ill. 184-5) The present invention relates to a Scotch-yoke lubricator, and more particularly, to a Scotch-yoke mechanism having means to engage a lubricant applicator at the top or bottom of the stroke.
The present invention is a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 55,320, filed September 12, 1960, entitled Lubrication Means for Mechanism of the Scotch- Yoke Type, assigned to the same assignee as that of the present invention, and issued on May 8, 1962 as US. Patent No. 3,033,312.
It is an object of the present invention to provide at least one lubricant applicator which is positioned at one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke and which is in the zone of travel of the yoke, in combination with a tang (or equivalent member) extending from one of the side walls of the yoke which is farthest from the applicator, and which is on the same side of the yoke as the applicator, the tang being bent in the direction of the applicator, whereby, at one end of travel of the yoke, the tang engages the applicator, acquires lubricant therefrom, and directs the lubricant to within the parallel walls of the yoke.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a pair of lubricant applicators, one each positioned near one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke, in combination with a pair of tangs, one each extending from the end of a respective side wall of the yoke, whereby, at each end of travel of the yoke, a respective tang engages its respective applicator, acquires lubricant therefrom, and directs the lubricant to within the parallel walls of the yoke.
These and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the enclosed drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a typical Scotch-yoke mechanism, showing a pair of stationary lubricant applicators, and further showing (in broken lines) the alternate positions of the yoke, whereby each applicator is engaged by its respective tang to direct lubricant to within the parallel side walls of the yoke;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view showing conventional means for driving the Scotch-yoke mechanism, and further showing (in end elevation) one of the lubricant applicators; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the Scotch-yoke mechanism, showing the tangs being formed integrally with the respective side walls of the yoke, and further showing each tang being curved slightly in the direction of its intended lubricant applicator.
With reference to the drawings, there is illustrated a Scotch-yoke mechanism 10, which includes a reciprocating longitudinal shaft 11, a transverse yoke 12 secured to the shaft 11, and eccentric means 13 (such as a pin or roller) guided within the guide track 14 of the yoke 12.
As will be understood by one skilled in the art, and with particular reference to FIGURE 2, the eccentric means 13 may be carried by a conventional rotating flywheel or gear 15, which is mounted on a stub shaft 16 and which engages a suitable pinion 17. Preferably, but not necessarily, the gear 15 may be provided with at least one Patented Jan. 28, 1964 opening 18 opposite from the eccentric means 13 for purposes of securing a weight therein (not shown) for counterbalancing the mechanism.
The transverse yoke 12 has a pair of tangs 19 and 20 which are formed integrally with the respective side walls 21 and 22 of the yoke 12. Moreover, the tangs 19 and 20 are adapted to cooperate with a pair of lubricant applicators 23 and 24, respectively, which are stationary, and which are retained by means of suitable holders 25 and 26, respectively. The lubricant applicators 23 and 24 are each positioned within the zone of travel of the reciprocating yoke 12, with the applicator 24 being at the top of the stroke as viewed in FIGURE 1, and with the applicator 23 being at the bottom of the stroke, which is to say, at the bottom of the travel of the reciprocating yoke 12. The applicators 23 and 24 are oppositely disposed from one another, on respective sides of the Scotch-yoke mechanism 10, and each of the applicators 23 and 24 are positioned near one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke 12.
Moreover, the tangs 19 and 20 are each bent or curved slightly in the direction of its respective applicator; and as shown more particularly in FIGURE 1, at the top of the stroke, the tang 26 will engage or contact the applicator 24, acquire lubricant therefrom, and direct the lubricant to within the guide track 14 of the yoke 12.
A similar situation prevails at the bottom of the stroke, wherein the tang 19 contacts and depresses the applicator 23 to again direct lubricant within the guide track 14 of the yoke 12.
Obviously, many modifications may be made without departing from the basic spirit of the present invention; and accordingly, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced other than has been specifically described.
I claim:
1. In combination with a Scotch-yoke mechanism having a reciprocating open-ended yoke including a pair of parallel side walls, lubrication means comprising:
(a) a lubricant applicator positioned near one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke;
(b) said applicator being in the zone of travel of the yoke; and
(c) a tang extending from one of the side walls of the yoke which is farthest from said applicator, and which is on the same side of the yoke as said applicator;
(0!) said tang being bent in the direction of said applicator, whereby, at one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke, said tang engages said applicator, acquires lubricant therefrom, and directs the lubricant to within the parallel walls of the yoke.
2. In combination with a Scotch-yoke mechanism having a reciprocating open-ended yoke including a pair of parallel side walls, lubrication means comprising:
(a) a pair of lubricant applicators, one each positioned near one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke, (b) said applicators being further positioned oppositely from one another on respective sides of the mechanism, and said applicators each being in the zone of travel of the yoke; and
(c) a pair of tangs, one each extending from the end of a respective side wall of the yoke;
(0.) said tangs being on opposite ends of the yoke from one another, and each of said tangs being bent in the direction of its respective applicator, whereby, at each end of travel of the reciprocating yoke, said respective tang engages its respective applicator, acquires lubricant therefrom, and directs the lubricant to within the parallel walls of the yoke.
3. Lubrication means as defined in claim 2, wherein:
3 (a) each of said tangs is formed integrally with its respective side wall of the yoke. 4. In combination with a Scotch-yoke mechanism having a reciprocating open-ended yoke including a pair of parallel side walls, lubrication means comprising:
(a) a lubricant applicator positioned near one end of travel of the reciprocating yoke; (b) said applicator being in the zone of travel of the yoke; and (c) an element, integrally formed with a respective one of the side walls of the yoke which is farthest from said applicator, and extending beyond said respective wall; (d) said integrally-formed element being on the same side of the yoke as said applicator, and
41 (e) said integrally-formed element being slightly curved, concave with respect to said applicator, whereby said element periodically engages said applicator during the reciprocation of the yoke, acquires lubricant 5 therefrom, and directs the lubricant to within the parallel walls of the yoke.

Claims (1)
1. IN COMBINATION WITH A SCOTCH-YOKE MECHANISM HAVING A RECIPROCATING OPEN-ENDED YOKE INCLUDING A PAIR OF PARALLEL SIDE WALLS, LUBRICATION MEANS COMPRISING: (A) A LUBRICANT APPLICATOR POSITIONED NEAR ONE END OF TRAVEL OF THE RECIPROCATING YOKE; (B) SAID APPLICATOR BEING IN THE ZONE OF TRAVEL OF THE YOKE; AND (C) A TANG EXTENDING FROM ONE OF THE SIDE WALLS OF THE YOKE WHICH IS FARTHEST FROM SAID APPLICATOR, AND WHICH IS ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE YOKE AS SAID APPLICATOR; (D) SAID TANG BEING BENT IN THE DIRECTION OF SAID APPLICATOR, WHEREBY, AT ONE END OF TRAVEL OF THE RECIPROCATING YOKE, SAID TANG ENGAGES SAID APPLICATOR, ACQUIRES LUBRICANT THEREFROM, AND DIRECTS THE LUBRICANT TO WITHIN THE PARALLEL WALLS OF THE YOKE.
